ADDITIONAL LORE TO FORESHADOW ONE OF THE BEST CHARACTERS OF TOA

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of running Tomb of Annihilation as the Dungeon Master.

Although it was an incredible adventure, I was disappointed with the character of Ras Nsi. He had such a compelling backstory, yet the written adventure lacked any meaningful opportunities for the players to understand it.

I wanted to fix this, so I devised a plan to foreshadow Ras Nsi from the beginning of the hex crawl, making the party think that he was the main threat and the one behind the death curse. Then, when they eventually meet Ras Nsi, they would be surprised to discover he was nothing but a dying victim of the death plague.

To effectively present the fallen Barae, I decided to tell his history as if it were a novel. I compiled all the available lore, invented some aspects, and adapted others to create 14 chapters of narrative about Ras Nsi's trajectory. My players were amazed and took notes, trying to pick up on hints while in the middle of the visions. This set the stage for making the Fane of the Night Serpent one of the most memorable moments of the adventure.

I am now sharing the work I've done with the hope that others running Tomb of Annihilation can improve their Ras Nsi experience. Of course, you should adapt the material to fit your group and DM style. If it's too long, feel free to shorten it or skip a chapter. It's completely up to you.

I sincerely hope this helps you to have a great time playing TOA.

The history in here is pretty good and I do like the idea of distributing lore through the artifact. Unfortunately, there are a couple problems with this. 1) There are numerous editing mistakes and some awkward writing so you can't really j [...]

Thank you for announcing it on Reddit! I didn't know how to introduce Ras Nsi and Dendar to my players and this look awesome. I've already read everything and tonight I am introducing the Orb to my players. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
