Doomed Forgotten Realms Volume Three: Fall of Vecna

Imagine a world where Tiamat was summoned successfully. Where the Princes of Elemental Evil tread unfettered. Where Demogorgon prowls the Underdark with the Wand of Orcus, leaving an army of undead in his wake. Where the storm giants have been cast to the bottom of the Ordning. Where Baldur's Gate has been banished to the Nine Hells. . . .

Imagine a world where good has lost and evil prevailed.

The Sword Coast has been divvied up by the Zhentarim, the mountain giants of Grudd Haug, the Cult of the Dragon, and many other sinister factions. But above them all looms the Archlich Vecna, who has orchestrated or exploited a series of ever-escalating calamities to conquer the very Realms themselves.

Will your players rise to the challenge? Or, will they too, fall before the might of Vecna?

Adventure Awaits

This 240+ page adventure is designed to take players from 10th to 20th level. It is not necessary to have played the previous adventures, and Fall of Vecna can be run as a stand-alone adventure for brand new characters. Additionally, advice has been provided to help transition higher level characters from other Wizards of the Coast products. Best yet, the product’s modular nature allows DMs to selectively pick and choose content to embed within their own homebrew campaign.

For those brave enough to play Fall of Vecna in its entirety they can expect to:

  • Embark upon an impossible mission to break into the impregnable Hosttower of the Arcane!
  • Traverse the dread domains of Ravenloft in search of Vecna’s darkest secrets!
  • Descend into an undersea chasm within the Scarlet Marpenoth to battle Urthuyn, an ancient kraken!
  • Hijack the adamantine titan known as the Vonindod
  • Ally with the Mad Mage of Undermountain!
  • Rescue the missing Bruenor Battlehammer from the Elemental Plane of Earth!
  • Smuggle themselves into Skullport, sneak into Waterdeep, and battle the archlich Vecna before his impending apotheosis and the consequent destruction of the Realms!

"For a more detailed exploration of this brave new world see our supplemental product the Doomed Forgotten Realms:Sword Coast Gazetteer."

Is this implying that I need to spend additional money to gain a sound understanding of the history of this setting? I'm a huge fan of this module but this feels off to me. A less abbreviated version of Chapter 1 and 3 of the Gazetteer should have a real place in this package in my opinion.

I have both, but I don't think you *need* the Gazetteer. I have found it helpful since I am more comfortable with things being more fleshed out if my party goes off the rails. I haven't had to use it yet other than for color (1/2 way through RoV).

That said, now that you mention it, I would think it would be nice to have at least the timeline on p.8 and Volo's notes on p. 10 of the Gazetteer in RoV and FoV, and would absolutely support adding Chapter 1 from the Gazetteer to both.

I feel Chapter 2, while helpful, is a lot of IP to put into the stand-alones that is not strictly necessary for RoV and FoV to work. That is part of the meat of the Gazetteer in my opinion.

Hi Jake!

Thanks for the comment and kind words and I hear you. For what it's worth we did try to include everything that you should need to run a complete adventure within Fall of Vecna. The Doomed Gazetteer shouldn't be necessary at all. Our goal was to have the Gazetteer enrich the adventure in the same way that the Sword Coast Gazetteer could be used to enrich a Tyranny of Dragons campaign. This is good feedback though. I am currently working on an Underdark Gazetteer intended to enrich an Underdark adventure. I will take your advice and try to embed more of the Gazetteer within the adventure this time!

Typo: Chapter 14, section “Denouement”, option 2 “Undaunted Heroism”: it states vecnas HP is reduced to an amount which is actually higher than the standard one in the stat block.

Also, what about Vecna’s stat block in guide to the shadow fell? Is that out of date now, or is it only intended for Epic Level campaigns?

Gah nice catch Adalberto! And great eye. As you noticed we ended up switching the stat block from the Shadowfell one to something new. The new one was intended to be a cross between the Shadowfell stat block and the one that was released by WOTC. I wouldn't think of either as out of date -- use whichever one you like most. They are both pretty epic :)

Love the concept and I've run the first mission so far. While prepping for the fun in Darkon, I noticed there's no map of Rivalis, even though the text of the adventure gives map points. Also there are locations around the richten haus within the outer wall, but the only map is the interior.

Just curious if this was intentional. And I do not have Rise of Vecna. I'm using Fall of Vecna to continue with after my party completed Ghosts of Saltmarsh. "five years pass and the Realms go to crap." sorta thing. :)

Hey Charles! Thanks so much for the kind words and support. It means a lot to us :)

Unfortunately the exclusion of maps for Rivalis and the exterior of Richten Haus was "intentional". We only had time/budget for so many maps and it was thought that DMs would be ok without these particular ones. Rivalis was assigned area numbers mostly for the convenience of referencing (ie this character is also sometimes found in Area H7).

That said, you are not the first to ask about the Rivalis map! Ive added it to the queue of content to add down the road although right now we are currently working on the VTT/POD and planning out the next phase of the Doomed Realms so it might be a bit :)

My players are still in Rise of Vecna, but I was noodling around a bit with Inkarnate to see if I could make some maps there for RoV and FoV. I made one for Rivalis as a test. It is not very good (I am no artist!) but it might give you ideas. You can see it via this link: https://inkarnate.com/m/3EAyM3-rivalis/

I figured it would need to be a walled town. The water features are weird, but that is how it is shown in the map of Darkon.

Hello!
I'm a younger DM and my parents bought me Rise of Vecna. I've been running it for about 6 months now, we're almost done. I've been reading up about the end of Fall of Vecna and I wasn't sure what happens to the gods? Do they come back after Vecna is "killed"? Or is the veil permanent? It doesn't say in the conclusion of the adventure.
Thanks so much, these campaigns have brought me and my friends so much joy.

Hi Jack!

Thanks so much to you (and your parents!). If you plan on concluding the adventure with Rise of Vecna I would suggest that the veil is destroyed and that the gods have 100% returned.

If, on the other hand, you plan to continue with Fall of Vecna I would say that the veil is weakened. The gods can occasionally commune with their followers, but they are still mostly powerless to personally intervene themselves. Some of the implications of this are discussed at the start of Fall of Vecna.

If you have any follow-up questions feel free to let me know. Otherwise thanks so much for giving our adventure a chance!

Oh I do have one follow up question: We bought Fall of Vecna and I was also planning on continuing with that.
In Fall of Vecna, the veil is weakened (from the player's actions in Rise of Vecna), but not destroyed. So the Gods can't come back.

My question is how do the Gods come back in Fall of Vecna? Are they trapped forever in the outer planes?

Rise of Vecna mentions 7 shroudstones and the party only retrieves and destroys 3 of those.

Although the number 7 might be a typo based on one of the ADnD modules revolving around Vecna, I decided to keep it. So the remaining 4 shroudstones are the reason why the veil is only weakened but not destroyed.

My party already knows about the 7 stones (somehow they found a book by a certain Mordenkainen, telling how Vecna tried something very similar in a world called "Oerth", what a coincidence) and plans to let the resistance know about them. So getting hold of the remaining 4 might either be something NPCs do in the background, or for the aftermath of my campaign

reading through the comments here I see many references to Maelstrom, Grudd Haug, even Serissa...

The party I could run this for comes out of SKT... does this make the campaign redundant?

Other than that I am VERY tempted

Hey Edoardo! It looks like you went ahead and purchased so thanks for the support!

Maelstrom, Grudd Haug and Serissa feature prominently in Rise of Vecna (the previous product) but not in this one. In appendix F we have a bit of advice on how to transition from STK to Fall of Vecna that will hopefully be helpful. But if you have any questions or want to spitball ideas feel free to post :)

Hi Scott,

thanks for your prompt reply and yes, lol, I could not resist :)

I read appendix F, the thing is: how would you introduce the doomed FR then? Did it all happen while they were battling Imryth? How comes no one told them what was going on (Harpers? Emerald Enclave?)

As for the outcomes of our SKT the Ordning wasn't restored quite yet. We paused the campaign after they vanquished the Doom of the Desert.

As for the Vonindod... well they have a few fragments.

Oh and one last thing: any suggestions for playing it on Roll20?

My players are VERY excited.

I would suggest a combination of things happening while your players were busy with the giants combined with the passage of time. Maybe something like,

"It has been a hard few years since you vanquished the Doom of the Desert. You did not know it at the time, but as you were dealing with the threat caused by the broken Ordning, other catastrophes were wracking the Realms. Beneath your very feet, unbenknownst to the surface world, the very Abyss had emptied itself into the Underdark. Cultists were secretly planning to bring Tiamat into the Realms and Auril's icy curses was spreading further and further south.

Since then it has only gotten worse. First Eltruriel and then Baldur's Gate mysteriously vanished, replaced now by an infernal fortress known as Helldoor's Gate. Armies of darkness marched upon the lands, led by the archlich Vecna. With so many disasters, and the heroes of the Realms spread so thin, there was no one to stop Vecna from conquering first Waterdeep, and...See more

Hi! I'm running CoS for my players and we're only 4 sessions in, but they're already talking about how if they survive, they'd love to continue in another campaign from lvl 10 up, and this looks great! My one questions is how does this follow on from CoS? I can see in the preview that there is an element of this adventure taking place in Ravenloft, but how does that mesh with the characters defeating Strahd?

I don't know CoS well, but it is parallel I think. Their actions in CoS probably don't affect anything in this adventure since you go to different places in Ravenloft than Barovia. Maybe extra piquancy since you visit the home of Van Richten.

You would have to come up with some way to transition them. Perhaps something like, while they were dealing with Strahd (and time runs funny in Ravenloft), Vecna escaped and rose to power in the Forgotten Realms causing the Doomed Forgotten Realms. They travel to the Sword Coast only to find absolute devastation. Since they are the experts on Ravenloft, they are contacted by the first mission giver, Xanathar...

Hey Adam!

Yeah, as always Steven pretty much nailed everything. You may or may not be aware but Barovia is just one of many domains within the larger plane of Ravenloft. The easiest way to use Fall of Vecna would be to have your players escape Ravenloft after they defeat Strahd. Presumably their homeworld is the Forgotten Realms and they return to find it conquered by Vecna. The main quest giver, Xanathar, seeks out the players because of their experience with Ravenloft and has them travel back into Ravenloft to seek out information about Vecna.

While in Ravenloft the adventure has the players gather lesser Vecna relics (The teeth of Vecna, scalp of Vecna, etc). If you wanted to foreshadow things you might even include one of these lesser Vecnan relics within your CoS campaign. Alternatively you might have them learn, while exploring the Ravenloft the second time, that one of the lesser Vecnan relics is secreted in Barovia and have them return -- perhaps to encounter a newly reincarnated...See more

Unfortunately we weren't able to get a map of Rivalis. The area numbering was more for narrative convenience and to have one area be able to easily reference other areas. One thing that your recently purchased Van Richten's Guide will provide though is a map of Darkon which will probably come in helpful!

Hey Scott M, why haven't the gods just kicked out Vecna at the start of FoV? Is it just that they can only work indirectly through people who keep getting crushed by the Vecnans, that there just are not that many natural-born people left and the AAOs are too weak-willed, that Vecna has enough power to challenge them, or something else?

I know I'm not Scott, but I interpreted it as: The barrier between the pmp (prime material plane) and the gods is weakened, but not fully destroyed. So the gods are able to communicate again with their followers, but they're still unable to manifest avatars and thus fight Vecna themselves (if they desired to do so).

FR lore-wise: after listening to the "Prince of Lies" and "Crucible" and considering the events of the Second Sundering, I'm a bit unsure how much the gods are actually allowed to influence the pmp, especially if it doesn't concern their office (then again Vecna threatens all their worshippers, so it should be ok to interfere directly? But they won't do that all that much after the second sundering happened? Yes, I'm a bit confused)

Hey Steven,

As with much of the lore we kept it a bit vague to allow DMs to adapt it to their campaign in whatever way they think works best. In my version of the Doomed Forgotten Realms the shroudstones are preventing clerics (and similar classes/subclasses) from gaining spells and divine powers. This, coupled with Vecnan propaganda, has turned people away from the gods. The "wall" created by the Shroudstones is imperfect and the gods are powerful so there are periodic exceptions. One such likely exception would be the PCs since it wouldnt be fun to play a cleric with no powers (That said, some DMs might ask their players not to make clerics if they wanted to keep the theme "pure").

With the destruction of the Shroudstones clerics have begun to regain their power/spells and can receive visions from the Gods. If there were any PC clerics I would probably have them experience some vision and give their holy symbol some kind of small buff to signify this. At the...See more

In answering a comment over in Rise of Vecna, I had another idea...If there are seven Shroudstones and the Resistance only knew about three of them, maybe the remaining stones are preventing full divine interventions, but let in enough of the "permitted" divine interventions as stated at the beginning of Fall of Vecna.

Tamara's point stands as well, since I think there are limits on what the gods are allowed to do.

Hey Steven! Appreciate the purchase, my friend! You shouldnt need any additional sourcebooks, particularly if you are already familiar with the basic premise/concept of Ravenloft. Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft would be helpful if your players go off the rails a little bit although to be honest Van Richten's describes each domain pretty superficially so even if you had it, it probably wouldn't add a whole lot to the adventure other than perhaps a map of Darkon which could be nice, but shouldn't be essential -- or the ability to move some of the Vecnan relics to other domains that you think your players might enjoy more.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
