Doomed Forgotten Realms Volume Three: Fall of Vecna

Imagine a world where Tiamat was summoned successfully. Where the Princes of Elemental Evil tread unfettered. Where Demogorgon prowls the Underdark with the Wand of Orcus, leaving an army of undead in his wake. Where the storm giants have been cast to the bottom of the Ordning. Where Baldur's Gate has been banished to the Nine Hells. . . .

Imagine a world where good has lost and evil prevailed.

The Sword Coast has been divvied up by the Zhentarim, the mountain giants of Grudd Haug, the Cult of the Dragon, and many other sinister factions. But above them all looms the Archlich Vecna, who has orchestrated or exploited a series of ever-escalating calamities to conquer the very Realms themselves.

Will your players rise to the challenge? Or, will they too, fall before the might of Vecna?

Adventure Awaits

This 240+ page adventure is designed to take players from 10th to 20th level. It is not necessary to have played the previous adventures, and Fall of Vecna can be run as a stand-alone adventure for brand new characters. Additionally, advice has been provided to help transition higher level characters from other Wizards of the Coast products. Best yet, the product’s modular nature allows DMs to selectively pick and choose content to embed within their own homebrew campaign.

For those brave enough to play Fall of Vecna in its entirety they can expect to:

  • Embark upon an impossible mission to break into the impregnable Hosttower of the Arcane!
  • Traverse the dread domains of Ravenloft in search of Vecna’s darkest secrets!
  • Descend into an undersea chasm within the Scarlet Marpenoth to battle Urthuyn, an ancient kraken!
  • Hijack the adamantine titan known as the Vonindod
  • Ally with the Mad Mage of Undermountain!
  • Rescue the missing Bruenor Battlehammer from the Elemental Plane of Earth!
  • Smuggle themselves into Skullport, sneak into Waterdeep, and battle the archlich Vecna before his impending apotheosis and the consequent destruction of the Realms!

Hi! I'm running CoS for my players and we're only 4 sessions in, but they're already talking about how if they survive, they'd love to continue in another campaign from lvl 10 up, and this looks great! My one questions is how does this follow on from CoS? I can see in the preview that there is an element of this adventure taking place in Ravenloft, but how does that mesh with the characters defeating Strahd?

I don't know CoS well, but it is parallel I think. Their actions in CoS probably don't affect anything in this adventure since you go to different places in Ravenloft than Barovia. Maybe extra piquancy since you visit the home of Van Richten.

You would have to come up with some way to transition them. Perhaps something like, while they were dealing with Strahd (and time runs funny in Ravenloft), Vecna escaped and rose to power in the Forgotten Realms causing the Doomed Forgotten Realms. They travel to the Sword Coast only to find absolute devastation. Since they are the experts on Ravenloft, they are contacted by the first mission giver, Xanathar...

Oh also, was there supposed to be a map of Rivalis? It seems to be referring to places on a map.

Hey Steven,

Unfortunately we weren't able to get a map of Rivalis. The area numbering was more for narrative convenience and to have one area be able to easily reference other areas. One thing that your recently purchased Van Richten's Guide will provide though is a map of Darkon which will probably come in helpful!

Hey Scott M, why haven't the gods just kicked out Vecna at the start of FoV? Is it just that they can only work indirectly through people who keep getting crushed by the Vecnans, that there just are not that many natural-born people left and the AAOs are too weak-willed, that Vecna has enough power to challenge them, or something else?

I know I'm not Scott, but I interpreted it as: The barrier between the pmp (prime material plane) and the gods is weakened, but not fully destroyed. So the gods are able to communicate again with their followers, but they're still unable to manifest avatars and thus fight Vecna themselves (if they desired to do so).

FR lore-wise: after listening to the "Prince of Lies" and "Crucible" and considering the events of the Second Sundering, I'm a bit unsure how much the gods are actually allowed to influence the pmp, especially if it doesn't concern their office (then again Vecna threatens all their worshippers, so it should be ok to interfere directly? But they won't do that all that much after the second sundering happened? Yes, I'm a bit confused)

Hey Steven,

As with much of the lore we kept it a bit vague to allow DMs to adapt it to their campaign in whatever way they think works best. In my version of the Doomed Forgotten Realms the shroudstones are preventing clerics (and similar classes/subclasses) from gaining spells and divine powers. This, coupled with Vecnan propaganda, has turned people away from the gods. The "wall" created by the Shroudstones is imperfect and the gods are powerful so there are periodic exceptions. One such likely exception would be the PCs since it wouldnt be fun to play a cleric with no powers (That said, some DMs might ask their players not to make clerics if they wanted to keep the theme "pure").

With the destruction of the Shroudstones clerics have begun to regain their power/spells and can receive visions from the Gods. If there were any PC clerics I would probably have them experience some vision and give their holy symbol some kind of small buff to signify this. At the...See more

In answering a comment over in Rise of Vecna, I had another idea...If there are seven Shroudstones and the Resistance only knew about three of them, maybe the remaining stones are preventing full divine interventions, but let in enough of the "permitted" divine interventions as stated at the beginning of Fall of Vecna.

Tamara's point stands as well, since I think there are limits on what the gods are allowed to do.

I share the love :) I worked really hard to try and make the kraken section somehow tie into Call from the Deep, as well, but just couldn't make it work in a way that felt satisfying and not crowbarred. But to me that adventure as much canon as any of the other hardcovers and deserved at least some shoutout.

Hey Steven! Appreciate the purchase, my friend! You shouldnt need any additional sourcebooks, particularly if you are already familiar with the basic premise/concept of Ravenloft. Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft would be helpful if your players go off the rails a little bit although to be honest Van Richten's describes each domain pretty superficially so even if you had it, it probably wouldn't add a whole lot to the adventure other than perhaps a map of Darkon which could be nice, but shouldn't be essential -- or the ability to move some of the Vecnan relics to other domains that you think your players might enjoy more.

Really love this, and it has given me so many ideas! That being said, I wanted to ask about Azalin Rex's statblock. It mentions in his At-will Spell Legendary action that it can't benefit from his Overchannel Trait. But I don't see Overchannel anywhere on it.

Hmm good question Ryan and thanks for the head's up. We'll address this in the next version update. The stat blocks went through a few iterations and I can't remember if you either:

a) We purposefully removed the Overchannel Trait but forgot to remove the reference to it from his Legendary Actions

or

b) Unintentionally omitted the Overchannel Trait from the statblock

Which gives you the freedom to decide if you want Azalin to have it or not! The trait, as we wrote it, is included below:

Overchannel. When Azalin casts a wizard spell of 1st through 5th level that deals damage, he can deal maximum damage with that spell.

So, after one of my players gifted this to me, I had a bit of time to get a quick overview (though I haven't thouroughly readed it yet). Some of my first thoughts (Spoilers for not only Fall of Vecna, but Rise of Vecna as well, ahead):

1.) Hmmm I wonder who the Grim Hunter could be (sarcasm off). I guess you weren't allowed to use his name because of what you did to him XD? Also makes me wonder what happened to a certain panther figurine

2.) Page 157 "The Ordning": The paragraph begins in the same way it did in Rise of Vecna, even referencing that the characters will have to "infiltrate the hill giants’ steadfast, Grudd Haug, and assault the Maelstrom". I guess that's an oversight?

3.) Now that he can actually make an appearance: why wasn't Volo consumed by the Soulmonger? Aren't ghosts restless souls?

4.) I was thinking of adding the Harpells as an alternative to Xanathar as suggested in Rise of Vecna, but now I'm thinking about how to...See more

Hey Tamara! Thank your player for us! We remain grateful for the support.

1) A keen eye for a quick read through! As for why we were "subtle" about it -- I wrote the majority of Volume 3 before Volume 2 was published. Back then we had a bit of nervousness about whether or not WOTC would let us follow through with our concept. Vecna was technically from Greyhawk, which is off limits and, at this point, he hadn't gone "mainstream". It was unclear if we could present an alternate version of the Realms as extreme as the one we came up with. With all of this I thought it wise not to be too out there regarding turning their flagship character into an evil, corrupted assassin. At this point the nervousness is gone but we decided to keep it subtle as a fun Easter egg. That said, how cool would it have been to have done some version of this art with an evil, glowing, Vecna eye?

Hey Tamara,

I also wanted to let you know that we just added gridless maps to Volume 3 -- something I believe you had been asking for with our previous adventures? Sadly, this still needs to be done with Volumes 1 and 2 but its on our to-do list (And if you shoot me an email I can get them for you, or anyone else, I can throw them on a Google drive).

Ah, thank you for the heads-up!
On that account another suggestion for the naming of the gridded maps: maybe consider adding the dimensions in squares to the map names (eg: if a map is 30 squares high and 60 squares wide add [30x60] to the name) getting better and better with foundry, I realize I struggle less with aligning the grids if I know the dimensions in squares.

Although gridless maps are still a good addition! Thank you!

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
