Introduction

Deep in the nebula storm of a dead god’s eye, a clan of mind flayers is preparing a ritual to open a wormhole and summon malevolent allies from the depths of the Far Realms. But a githyanki dragon rider is hot on their trail, ready to brave the cosmic storm and disrupt the ritual—for better, or perhaps, for worse. Only with the aid of clever heroes can the portal be sealed and the aberrational nightmares repelled.

A Spelljammer: Light of Xaryxis Expansion - What's this all about?

As the party travels through the Astral Sea to confront the Xaryxian Armada in Light of Xaryxis, chapter 10, they encounter a githyanki dragon rider named Dagaz who is hunting mind flayers. In the book, this encounter is simply meant as a cliffhanger for the end of chapter 9, and is very unlikely to result in anything more than a brief exchange before Dagaz departs and never reappears in the campaign.

The purpose of this adventure is to provide an important side quest offered by Dagaz to give this encounter more narrative impact. In this adventure, Dagaz recognizes that the coalition is sorely outmatched and offers to tell them the location of a Xaryxian reinforcement base that the party could strategically destroy before the fight with the Armada. In return, the party must accompany Dagaz on a quest to hunt down and defeat a crew of mind flayers in a nearby Wildspace system called Vermilionspace.

As always, it is up to you how much of the content to use. It’s perfectly fine to use some parts of this supplement while discarding others, or simply let the ideas presented here inspire new ideas of your own. This supplement assumes a party of four to six characters of 8th level.

This Adventure Includes:

  • Epic Combat. Fight mind flayers to disrupt their terrible ritual while surviving the nebula storm chaos with no air.
  • High Stakes. Contain a cosmic horror and survive a supernova explosion.
  • Color VTT-Ready Maps. Battle within the Vermilion Eye nebula in Wildspace.

Adventure Summary

The party receives a quest to hunt some mind flayers with Dagaz in a nearby Wildspace system. Once the group reaches Vermilionspace, they encounter a flying fish ship whose crew are being mind-controlled by puppeteer parasites. The party must decide to save or slay the crew before continuing on deeper into the system. Arriving at the heart of the system, a nebula called the Vermilion Eye, the party discovers five mind flayers conducting a ritual to summon invaders from the Far Realms. The party must disrupt the ritual while surviving the nebula storm. But as the mind flayers lose control, the ritual unexpectedly gives way to a cosmic horror that threatens to enter through the portal. To stop it, the party must either close or regain control of the portal themselves before the creature fully emerges. Finally, as the monster is defeated, the party must work together to safely contain the unstable energy of the wormhole—before a supernova explosion threatens their survival.

Are the monsters positioned on V2, V3, V4, and V5 intended to attack the party as they progress along the platforms? Only the monster on V1 has the "Ritual Combat" statement.

Hi James,
The text in the Ritual Combat subsection of V1 applies to all of the platforms (V2-V5). In hindsight, it would have been clearer for us to have included it above the V1 header so that it was clear that it applied to the whole area. Will likely revise this in a future update.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
