What do I get?

  • Playable Alternative "Pureblood Shifter" Lineage Rules (including, for ease of use, a summarised version of the official Werewolf, Werebat, Werebear, Wereboar, Wererat, Wereraven and Weretiger)
  • Additional Wereshark rules.
  • 24 Lycanthropic Feats and Flaws.
  • Alternative behavioral activity rules for those who don't use alignments.
  • Notes on non-humanoid lycanthropes and one example creature statblock.

Sure, you’re a nice DM. You want to give your players what they want. But when what they want is to play “Something from the Monster Manual”, then that’s just not practical. Or is it?

This material aims to create a comprehensive guide to PC and NPC werecreatures, and features newly written material, alongside elements drawn from the Monster Manual, Monsters of the Multiverse, Eberron Rising From the Last War, Dungeon of the Mad Mage and Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. We have tried to stick as closely as possible to Rules As Written whilst expanding and rebalancing the playable werecreature as both a native born race, and an acquired cursed lineage.

We found the way PC werecreatures are handled in official material confusing and difficult to handle. So we collated all sources of official material into one place, then broke down all of the cooler powers and features of the relevant monster stat blocks, added some more features to drive PC behavior without relying solely on alignment change, and rebuilt it all into an optional feat tree. This lets players select the aspects of Lycanthropy they find most appealing as the character levels up. By making PCs pay for the cool bits using their ASI increases and carefully arranging the feat tree structures, the power level of the new monstrous PC is kept firmly in line with the rest of the party. These rules have been playtested sufficiently to demonstrate that the feat structure itself is not overpowered or likely to derail or curtail someone’s game. Occasionally a level prerequisite has had to be added to prevent a particular feat from being overpowered.

Our aim is to present to DMs a method of allowing players to use this material to portray a werecreature with enough consequences to make it interesting without removing player agency, or unbalancing the game. We also present some other ideas, including applying these feats and flaws to non-humanoids to create other types of cursed werecreature.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
