The Liching Hour: A Liar's Night One-Shot for Halloween

It's a race against the clock as the party must decide if they want to help or hinder a goblin necromancer's attempt to summon the archlich Vecna to the town of Phandalin at midnight on Liar's Night.

The Story So Far...

Fizzbang Frazzlepop has always been a little unhinged. He has devoted his life to becoming one of the vilest creatures in the multiverse: a lich.

Unfortunately, despite being a highly intelligent Wizard who studied under the top faculty at Strixhaven’s Witherbloom College, Fizzbang has fallen multiple times into what may best be called "Get Lich Quick Schemes." He is far from a discerning goblin, and that's putting it nicely.

This time, however, Fizzbang may have actually found what he’s spent decades looking for. This particular Get Lich Quick Scheme involves contacting the archlich Vecna on Liar’s Night.

While Vecna is considered a lesser deity in the planar hierarchy of gods, he remains a significantly powerful and evil entity.

Summoning a being such as Vecna into the Material Plane is rarely a good idea, and doing so to make a pact on a night when falsehoods are not only expected, but encouraged, does not bode well for anyone who calls this plane home.

And that’s not even considering how bad things could get with a person like Fizzbang Frazzlepop gaining access to the untamed, eldritch power belonging to a lich.

There’s a catch, though. Fizzbang can’t do it himself.

The necromantic goblin has little time until The Liching Hour (midnight on Liar’s Night) and still doesn’t have the most important part of the ritual: the heart of an archlich.

Fizzbang has to spend this time preparing the ritual itself, getting ready to venture into the vortex that will let him view Vecna's visceral, vexing visage. So he has sent an associate to secure the artifact for him.

Fizzbang isn't the only one after the heart, however.  Vecna commands the loyalty of any number of cultists who believe Fizzbang's hubris and disrespect to make demands of the archlich will bring ruin. They are working to stop Fizzbang from summoning Vecna.

It may be the PCs who decide what happens when the clock chimes and rings in The Liching Hour.

What's Inside?

  • 1 Amazing Liar's Night/Halloween one-shot set in Phandalin from The Lost Mine of Phandelver and Phandelver & Beyond: The Shattered Obelisk campaigns!
  • 7 Original Monsters & NPCs
  • 3 Unique Artifacts
  • 5 Wondrous & Magic Items
  • 2 Detailed, VTT-friendly maps
  • 16 Original VTT Tokens

I think this adventure is best for parties between levels 5 to 8 but can easily scale it to 3 to 5 by lowering the number of creatures per encounter and adjusting CR down using DMG rules.

Printer and User-Friendly!

The better experience for using this is to use the (Spreads) document, as it has an open-book layout which also makes it easy to print because each single page is 5.5 inches wide. Just print in landscape mode on 8.5 x 11 paper (Letter). Plus, everything is grayscale/black-and-white to save your ink and is automatically print-friendly!

Don't Miss My Other Stuff!

If you like The Liching Hour, I think you'll really like some of my other stuff. Take a look at my author page and enjoy yourself!

You can also have some spooky fun with my other horror and Halloween-themed titles: Phandalin After Dark, Horrific Encounters in Ravenloft, and Little House on the Scary!

Hi BJ, could you highlight the differences between v1.2 and v1.3 ? I was not sure if one was for lower level PCs.
Thanks !

Hi! The 1.3 version includes some typo fixes and clarifications on recommended party size, enemy action costs, and that sort of thing. Otherwise, they are for the same level of characters. :)

Unfortunately, that's on DMG's end, and I would reach out to the site support to see if there's an issue--especially if you can add other products to your cart. It may also be that it is technically "in" your cart but not appearing, and a logout/in would show it or a hard refresh of the page by pressing SHIFT-CTRL (or CMD on Mac)-R could fix it.

Ran into the same problem. Changing the page to the desktop version of the site seems to resolve it

My playtests have been anywhere from 3 hours to 7 hours, depending on the choices the players made.

I'm really excited to run this as a Halloween oneshot, but I'm a little confused. On the preview image, it says for levels 5-8, but in the PDF, it says for levels 3-5, and I don't know which is the right one. And I found no indication for how many players at that level this works for. Could someone please help me out? I will be running it for either 3 or 4 people, at what level should they be?

I updated it today, actually, after working on it a little more. I thought I got all the places in the PDF where it mentioned 3-5, but I’ll check and update again when I get back to a computer.

I’m doing it for a group of 3 tomorrow, and they’re going to be Level 5 (considering 6), but I’d say 4 level 5s would be a sweet spot.

I would really love to run this for my group on Halloween, but I don’t see the motivation why the group wouldn’t just keep the box and try to bring it to the next temple of a good god of some kind to destroy it or keep it from being used by anyone. Could someone clarify this here for me ?

Just want it to be known that it is an incredible pain to try and align the maps to a VTT, roll20 specifically. If the recommended dimensions could be added, that would be great. I had to put the map into photoshop and chop off the useless parts without a grid and even then it took about 45 minutes to make it work.

Absolutely not VTT friendly in the slightest.

I am really sorry that happened, Dylan! I have updated the product page with new maps that are 3000x2250 for R20, and I have them aligned in R20 myself with a page of 43 cells (70px) x 32 cells (70px). It aligned to the grid with no issue for me this time. You can see the settings you can see in this screencap https://i.imgur.com/h4YOXz4.jpeg

Thanks for the heads up, and I hope this works a little better for you. Again, really sorry!

Hey, thanks for the quick fix, and no need to apologize. I think I was just frustrated in the moment, and I'm sorry if I came off as short! The maps are beautiful and the adventure seems really fun from what I've read so far.

No worries at all. I would have been frustrated, too, so I understand. I have fought and fought getting Roll20 to work with maps for hours, so when I read that I was like...No! Not on my watch! Hope you enjoy it!

Some the pages are out of order in both versions of the pdf. It looks like the page 7 should actually be page 4. I haven't read through the rest of the adventure though.

I'd also like to point out that half of the rooms in the dm's version of fizzbang's lair are not labeled.

You are absolutely right, Pat! Thank you for pointing that out. Apparently, Publisher and I had a disagreement in how some things should be done, haha. I'm kind of appalled I missed that glaring of an issue, so thank you so much for pointing it out! I just uploaded a fixed version for the Spreads and Pages version marked v1.2.

Planning on running this for a Halloween 1-shot. GREAT writing and production quality. Maps are a definite plus. Professional. The story is perfect to be played up horror or quirky fun or (what I'm planning) both. The author did a wonderful job. Very well balanced. We are going to have a creepy wild week before Halloween.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
