100 Hooks and Rumours to Hear on or About the Rock of Bral

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This supplement has 100 rumours that characters could hear related to the Rock of Bral, both within and without the city. Whether or not any particular rumour is true is up to the Dungeon Master. They could range from deliberate misinformation being spread to cause trouble to evidence of conspiracies and dangers. The rumours can be heard when asking for around for information and can be used as background colour or potential adventure hooks.

Note: These hooks and rumours are all based on the material in SJR5 The Rock of Bral.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • The dwarven clan who were the last permanent occupants of the Rock before Captain Bral discovered seem to have just vanished one day in the middle of their ordinary routine. It's rumoured that this was through the use of some kind of weapon or other magical device that the dwarves came across and activated, not realising what it was. It's also rumoured that there are groups looking for the device, which may still be on the Rock somewhere.
  • The Dwarven District of the Rock of Bral is a largely self-policing neighbourhood where the Magistrate's Watch is rarely called to intervene. It's rumoured that not only is the Watch rarely needed, it’s actively discouraged from taking too great an interest in what the dwarves consider the meting out of justice to anyone who annoys them.
  • The efforts of the Pragmatic Order of Thought and its leader on the Rock of Bral, Tareo Mosantas, have driven slave trading and piracy on the Rock underground, something that displeases both slavers and pirates. It's rumoured that there's a substantial price on Tareo's head and that the half-elf has already survived several assassination attempts; it seems unlikely that such will stop, though.
  • The Elven Forest of the Rock is the name given to the city's elven district, even though few if any elves seem to live beneath its boughs. There are rumours, though, that those who try to poke too deeply into the forest and what secrets it might contain never come back out again; the elves are said to be very protective of their privacy.
  • The elven Imperial Navy deals with the Rock and Prince Andru, though they feel he should form an outright alliance with them, one that would probably benefit the elves more than Bral. It's rumoured that the elves have occasionally instigated incidents to demonstrate just how useful the Imperial Navy is to the Rock's safety and security.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
