Smoke & Thunder: Firearms For Fifth Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Firearms At Any Technology Level!

Would you like to add guns to D&D? If your setting, like many, contains elements of the Late Middle Ages or Renaissance, the Wild West or steampunk, or if you're in a Spelljammer campaign, you could likely use some good gun stats. What about running D&D in a modern or futuristic setting or the classic trope of finding a crashed spaceship full of technological marvels? You'll need appropriate weapon and gear stats for all that, too. Yes, I give stats for hand cannons, muskets, revolvers, shotguns, semi-automatics, machine guns, sniper rifles, lasers, blasters, and a whole lot more, all in one guide. Smoke & Thunder makes firearms usable by characters of any class, across a wide range of time periods and genres. The rules inside make firearms formidable without unbalancing the game or eliminating other weapon choices.

In short, Smoke & Thunder balances all eras' weapons against each other—giving you guns that blow away the bad guys without blowing up your game!

Deep dive into using firearms in 5e! This definitely fills a hole in the latest Spelljammer three book set. I especially like how the various weapons are divided into five different technological eras, allowing DMs to pick the one that is right for their world. Impressive first release!

This is a very detailed product, giving a lot of insight into the sorts of weapons available. Giving a lot of different optional rules to enhance the feel of firearms and make them more impactful, but just as easily can be used with just the normal rules and not feel out of place whatsoever in a normal game.
The additional features to be used alongside them feel like a natural extension of the game.

There's way more to this than I expected, and I can say that it's totally worth it.

I really like how you created stats for firearms that are sufficiently interesting but not overly complicated. You struck a really nice balance here, well done :)

I just noticed the Air Reservoir Rifle has the "special" property but isn't listed in the Special Weapons list. Just a heads up

Thank you! The air reservoir rifle is an odd-ball, and I overlooked that. Thanks for the catch! It will go into an update. I caught an error on one of the spells that I want to fix too.

I went down a total rabbit hole researching the development of different arms. (Wikipedia stumbling is an incredible thing.) While I deliberately avoided representing too many variations of the same thing (like old editions did with pole-arms or D20 Modern did with firearms), I wanted to bring in some of the truly unique and different options that people might not have heard of. The fact that the Lewis and Clark expedition carried some of these (as well as blunderbuss mounted to the front of their canoe) was a bonus historical curiosity.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
