Spelljammer: Encounters on the Rock of Bral

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This supplement introduces over 40 new simple encounters and 6 new complex encounters designed for the Rock of Bral, helping you diversify and expand your Spelljammer campaigns. The document is sixteen pages in a compact two column layout.

The simple encounters are divided into high city, middle city, low city, and underside encounters. The first three have d12 tables and the restricted underside area has a d6 table, containing shortly described but varied encounters that help bring the city to life.

The six complex encounters are quests or events that can work as short one-shot adventures on their own. These encounters include:

- A dispute over an heirloom between two halfling noble families (includes a dungeon map)

- A voyage into Wildspace to find, explore, and return an ice asteroid to refill Lake Bral with (includes a dungeon map)

- An unexpected attack on Bral by a neogi nightspider fleet

- The hunt for a deviant mind flayer in the tunnels beneath the Rock of Bral

- Investigation of a magical art gallery with suspected involvement in a string of disappearances

- A job to clear out three scavver nests located in the remote parts of Bral’s underside

Many of the encounters can be used just with the Monster Manual, but some of them also require information about the spelljamming ships or creatures specific to Spelljammer, available in Astral Adventurer's Guide and Boo's Astral Menagerie. It is also assumed that you are familiar with the Rock of Bral as presented in Astral Adventurer’s Guide.

I hope you find this supplement helpful in bringing the Rock of Bral to life by adding more variety and unexpected elements to it – and that it will be a great and vibrant hub to launch all your wondrous space adventures from!

Hi! I am interested in these adventures. Are they prepped for 5e rules?

Hello Sarah! All 3rd-party content on DMsGuild is for D&D 5e. This was made for the 2014 rules, but the 2024 rules are officially fully backwards compatible, so there should be no problems running it with either version. You'll need the Spelljammer: Adventures in Space boxed set and the Monster Manual to get the most out of this supplement. Hope you find it useful to bring a little extra life and and adventure to the Rock of Bral (or wherever you decide to use it)! Feel free to let me know if there's anything that's unclear.

Greetings. I've uploaded another (very) minor update for the title, version 1.2.

Here is the list of changes:
- A couple of minor clarifications and typo corrections
- Slightly increased the recommended APL for using the stronger mind flayer deviant option
- Updated the bestseller badge. Thanks for the interest, and I hope your players enjoy their stay on the Rock of Bral!

Hello Jesse!
I was considering the purchase of your supplement, but I'm a bit confused by the preview. The encounter showcased with the halfling nobles barely has any room for a party to move and the creatures are of a very low difficulty (CR 1/4), so this encounter definitely wasn't designed to be run in tandem with Light Of Xarixys where the characters are level 5. Are the other complex encounters similarly designed?

Thanks for the question Jerry!
The supplement has been designed to work universally for any Spelljammer adventures that include the Rock of Bral (or other similar space cities). It includes encounters for many tiers of play. They are always a little difficult to estimate depending on party size and composition, as well as the type of encounter, but the complex encounters would be tiered roughly as follows:
- Encounter 1: Tier 1 (as you mentioned)
- Encounter 2: Tier 2
- Encounter 3: Tier 3 (combat includes friendly NPCs, potential ship-to-ship combat, and choices that can significantly change the encounter, so this one is a little harder to estimate)
- Encounter 4: Tier 2
- Encounter 5: Late Tier 1 or early Tier 2 (but includes a tip to easily scale it to Tier 3)
- Encounter 6: Tier 2

So while the supplement hasn't been strictly designed to be run in tandem with Light of Xaryxis, if you wish to modify the campaign to have an extended stay on the Rock of Bral,...See more

I forgot to address the space to move in my first response. Most of the encounters have been designed to be run in "theater of the mind" and have either no real limits for movement or provide suggested dimensions that typically offer much more room than in the first encounter. The second encounter's map uses 10 x 10 feet squares so it's a little more spacious than the first, even though it also has some narrow corridors.

If you were to run the first encounter and are concerned with the lack of space for movement, the easiest solution might be to also change the scale from 5 x 5 feet to 10 x 10 feet. I made the dungeon quite cramped since it's a crypt for halflings and the lack of space can also challenge the players in a different way (especially since most of the enemies there are not as concerned with it). However, I definitely understand that it could feel restricting, and encourage making adjustments where necessary to make it more suitable for your group's preferences.

It's...See more

Greetings!

As I prepare for my own Spelljammer campaigns, I decided to expand this product after being struck by some additional inspiration. I have now released version 1.1 of the title. If you had previously downloaded the PDF, I recommend updating to version 1.1, as it has a number of new encounters!

Here is the list of changes:
- Added two more Simple Encounters to High City, Middle City, and Low City each (simple encounters now total over 40)
- Added two more Complex Encounters
- Noted that the Oakenstar undead ancestors have Darkvision and are immune to poison and exhaustion
- Corrected some minor typos

Feel free to let me know if anything needs clarification – I'll be happy to provide answers or updates the best I can. Happy Spelljamming!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
