Distress Signal

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Answering a distress call, the party will board a defective ship and attempt to rescue its crew - or plunder it. On the way, they will face:

  • A difficult travel through the stars
  • A panicked animal escaped from its cage
  • A mutated and enraged giant space hamster
  • The ship’s failure, making their escape much more dangerous

This adventure is designed for four to five 1st to 3rd-level characters. It is intended to be run in about four hours, making it a good starting point for new players, or for Dungeon Masters running a game during a gaming convention or at their local game store.

In addition to the adventure itself, this product contains a brand new ship: the Beetleship. Powered by space hamsters, this marvel of technology is extremely resilient and requires a very small crew.

Opening the PDF 1.1 in preview (what I typically use for PDF reading and highlighting) the search doesn't work. So it was very hard for me to figure out where the artifact made an appearance. In fact I had to make it up in the end.

The room descriptions were a bit drab and short, I had to do a lot of riffing to give players a real sense of the room. Luckily they didn't try many no-event rooms before finding the laboratory and engine rooms. But after I read a few times and still didn't find where they should have seen the artifact I made it up.

The gravity is strange and there were times when the room descriptions didn't say anything about a ladder that was on the map. At one point we had align the maps to figure out where the ladder went. Eventually concluding that it went outside.

Air escaping? What causes that if it kind of has a "magical bubble" normally. That's less about this adventure and spelljammer stuff in general. I think this adventure may have...See more

Hello, thanks a lot for your feedback!

Regarding "opening in preview", I'm not quite sure what that means? I tried the search function of various PDF readers successfully, but if you have more details I'll try to reproduce the issue.

I guess what you're calling "the artifact" is the "strange piece of dark crystal" found in the Engine Room? The one which caused the mutation of the beast therein?

Point taken regarding the ladder (I imagine it's the "southern" one, which gives access to the Loading Bay?), I'll see if I can add more emphasis on the fact that this room has a door leading outside. And yes the gravity is strange, but that's a common feature amongst Spelljamming ships, courtesy of the Gravity Plane.

The air escaping is due to Helm malfunction, there are hints of this on page 8 (during challenge #3), and I believe it's also explained at the beginning of Part 3. But I'll have a look again to see if it needs to be...See more

I have added a new version of the file, which fixes some typographical errors, and also included ready-to-use maps of the ship for your favorite online virtual tabletop software. Don't hesitate to let me know if anything doesn't work as it should.

I love this ship. The captain's name should be Theodore Kord.

Much to my shame I'll have to admit I had to google it - not every comics made their way to my country when I was younger (as they had to translate them), but I can totally see it. Reading about his gadgetry, he could totally be a gnome artificer...

Given this adventure has no intrigue specifically revolving around a NPC's gender, feel free to change Lucy to Theodore when running it, especially if you're with people who would "get" the reference. It won't break anything in the scenario. :-)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
