Swallowed! An Escape Room Adventure for Tier 1 Characters

An Escape Room Adventure (plot twist: the room is a dragon)!

At the start of the adventure, the characters have just been swallowed by a dragon, along with a huge mouthful of gold, treasures, and potentially useful items from another dragon’s hoard. Oh, and an Egg.

This adventure combines an escape-room scenario with a cinematic finale where the characters can choose whether to participate in a battle between two dragons before flying the airship to safety. Along the way the characters make enemies and allies and there are plenty of hooks to lead the adventurers onwards.

Run as the start of an campaign (where players start at level 3) or drop into an ongoing campaign to add hooks and complications.  But also fun just as a one-shot!  Playtest groups finished in 3-4 hours.

Not juvenile but suitable for family play - no gore or horror, minimal combat required, fun challenges, roleplay opportunities, quirky NPCs.

  • Two hand-drawn maps (dragon interior and island, in color and black and white variations), suitable for paper and online play
  • Set above the Moonshae island of Snowdown along the Sword Coast in the Forgotten Realms, but very easy to move (just use any hex map of an island to navigate above)
  • Airship stat block and rules for airship navigation plus random aerial encounters. Not just any airship either!! A COLLAPSIBLE airship.  Super quirky and fun! Very probably the airship will not tip over -- if they don't roll poorly on the Collateral Damage table...
  • Two dragon NPCs and two humanoid NPCs, intended to be potential recurring enemies and/or allies if you don't play this only as a one-shot. Introducing Moniboop Pintipple, the inventor of Pintipple’s Untippable Airships!
  • A whole HOARD of dragon treasure, including a mysterious crown and some unique dragon-themed magic items
  • Four monster stat blocks (fire hoard scarabs, flying kobold dragonshield, kobold inventor in a basket, kobold scale sorcerer on a giant bat)
  • Accessibility best practices - tested with screen readers, no funky tables that don't work, descriptions provided for all illustrations, simplified document also provided for download and printing on black and white printers. Please let me know if you experience any problems. Everyone deserves to have fun!

Comments from playtesters:

  • "This was a really unique adventure! The setting but also the different kinds of challenges."
  • "I hope you write more, I want to fly around some more"
  • "The dragon combat was crazy!"

Hi! Yes, as far as I'm concerned. The dragon image is copyright WoTC, but I don't think that violates their content policy.

Also, delighted to hear you are running the adventure and hope you have fun!

Ah, ok. I think Startplaying actually bans WoTC image as content, but that's ok. Excited to play it tomorrow! Thanks anyways. :)

Just a question of wording. The Swarm of Fire Horde Scarabs' "Swarm of Bites" attack says "and the target has disadvantage on attack rolls until the start of its next turn." Is that until the target's next turn or the swarm's? Because the wording would indicate the target's next turn but unless they're doing a lot of opportunity attacks, that seems fairly useless.

You are quite right! It should say "until the end of its next turn" not the start. Well spotted, I will make changes. I hope you enjoy playing it!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
