Religions of Theros

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Religions of Theros presents a new approach to interacting with the pantheon as you forge your legend in the mythic world of Theros. This title presents Theros as a truly religious world, with life defined by a calendar of festivals, where religious rites are performed with daily activities like sitting down for a meal, and where the most famous aspects of culture such as athletic games, theatrical performances, and epic poetry all form part of the religious world. Characters who honor the gods earn their collective blessings, but those who fail to are cursed for their hubris.

Three scenes in the style of Athenian ceramic art, with figures of off-white and terracotta red on dark blue and purple starry backgrounds. In the first scene a satyr and a human pour a libation from a vase onto a plate and an altar. In the second, a merfolk pours the contents of a vase into a bowl where an ox bows its head to drink, while a human stands behind it raising a knife. In the third scene, a human oracle sits on a tripod stool, holding a bowl in one and and a branch in the other, her head tilted back to look towards the heavens.

Inside you will find:

  • The Favor Mechanic: Used either in conjunction with, or replacing the Piety system, the Favor mechanic tracks how your party is viewed by each of the gods, who offer boons to their favored servants, and curses to those who dishonor the gods with their hubris.
  • Rites of Worship: The Favor mechanic is affected by the many facets of religious rites in Theros, translated into game mechanics from the real religious rites of the ancient Greeks. Pour libations and offer handmade votives to the gods. Make animal sacrifices, divining their entrails for the gods’ will, or visit an oracle who can commune directly with the divine. Take part in grand festivals, where you can worship by competing in Athletic games, thespian competitions, or poetic orations.
  • The Gods: Blessings and Curses: Learn how religious rites differ for each god, what unique actions affect their Favor, and the Blessings and Curses they place upon mortals, based on their Favor score. Each of the fifteen Gods offer two blessings and two curses based upon their domain, affecting each character in the adventuring party, allowing gods to side with or against your party, picking sides as the gods of Greek myth did with the heroes of the Trojan War.
  • Mysteries and Elective Cults: Much like in ancient Greece, where religion was not limited to the public worship of the Olympians, in Theros, many elective and secretive cults exist, worshiping Nymphs, Heroes, and unique aspects of the Gods, forgotten or unknown to the wider world.
  • The Party Favor Sheet: A printer-friendly and form-fillable Favor sheet provides an easy way to track the party’s Favor score with each of the gods, and to see which Blessings and Curses currently affect them.
  • All of this lavishly decorated with Stickyhunter's art, displaying religious life and the power of the gods in the style of ancient Greek ceramic art.

Absolutely fantastic, I say this is a must-have guide for anyone running a Theros campaign who wants to involve the gods (and let's face it, if you're running a Theros campaign why wouldn't you?) It is clear a lot of thought and planning [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
