Doomed Forgotten Realms: Sword Coast Gazetteer

Doomed Forgotten Realms Gazetteer

Has your group ever lost a Dungeons & Dragons adventure like Storm King’s Thunder, Tomb of Annihilation, or Descent Into Avernus?

What would the world look like if you lost all of them?

Doomed Forgotten Realms: Sword Coast Gazetteer reimagines the Forgotten Realms as a world where every worst-case scenario became reality. The demons claimed the Underdark, Baldur’s Gate was dragged into the Nine Hells, Auril froze all of Icewind Dale, and dragon cults summoned Tiamat to rain down terror.

In this post-apocalyptic vision of the Forgotten Realms, all the adventuring heroes failed and were slain—or they never even answered the call to adventure. But even in this darkest timeline, a faint glimmer of hope remains that good might emerge victorious.

Confront the Evils

The Sword Coast Gazetteer presents 70+ pages with everything you need for running a campaign in this setting! The Doomed Forgotten Realms are perfect for the aftermath of any campaign that results in a TPK—what happens when the heroes aren’t there to save the day? Inside this gazetteer, you'll find:

  • Six factions that now rule the Sword Coast: Jarlaxle’s drow pirates, Tiamat’s cultists, servants of the Elder Elemental Eye, a legion serving the fallen angel Zariel, and the Zhentarim in a tenuous alliance with the servants of Vecna
  • A reimagining of every major location in the Sword Coast
  • Quest and campaign hooks from 1st to 20th level as the characters rise from nobodies to realm-saving heroes…or its new tyrants.
  • 5 new subclasses equipped to survive this brutal world:
    • Bard: College of the Elements
    • Druid: Circle of the Nine
    • Fighter: Zhentilar’s Finest
    • Rogue: Spell Slayer
    • Wizard: School of Secrets
  • New backgrounds and a heroic chronicle to quickly generate interesting, complex characters that populate the Doomed Forgotten Realms

I would love to purchase this title when it becomes available in softcover/hardcover.

Since this is your intellectual property, I need to ask:

Is there any likelihood of this ever becoming POD, and if not, am I allowed to get a print shop or something to print up a physical version for me?

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the purchase!

Im pretty confident that you are allowed to take it to a print shop (For your own personal use of course!). Right now our energy is going into finishing Volume 3 of our adventure path but, afterwards, we are definitely going to explore POD options.

Does this contain an alternative (and hopefully more challenging) stat block for Vecna than the one found in the Vecna Dossier?
Customer avatar
Steven O July 26, 2022 3:33 pm UTC
This one does not, but the creator said that the sequel to "Rise of Vecna" will involve confronting him as CR 35.

Thanks Steven! A CR 35 stat block for Vecna can be found in our Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes: The Shadowfell. Like Steven said, we will be reproducing it (perhaps with some minor modifications) for the next, and final, installment of our Vecna adventure path.

Would this be an easy campaign to integrate into DotMM?

Finally, representation for DnD parties that just absolutely suck.

I'm loving the whole idea and can't wait to build on it and run a huge campaign with it. It's going to involve Jarlaxle's fleet being spelljammed out and then seeking out help and mcguffins in greyhawk and other settings. That being said, just wondering why Trollbark Forest is in the water off the sword coast?

Fateful Moments, page 69

On a roll of 16, I gain the benefits of the Athlete feat. Is this supposed to include the Ability Score increase?!?

P.S. In some of the previous tables, fateful moments are called fateful event.

Any plans on giving this a PoD version? I am old and can't go without the feel of paper in the hands.

Hey Jonathan -- I hear you. I would bet Ive got a few years on you :)

I might be speaking out of school, as I was only tangentially involved with the gazetteer, but I do think there are tentative plans to take this POD. However, I suspect they will not materialize until after the completion of Volume 3.

Sorry for the delay, but thanks for your interest :)

What is volume 3?
Customer avatar
Tom L July 13, 2022 9:18 am UTC
I think they mean Volume three of the adventure line that goes with this, part one being academy of Adventure, part two the rise of Vecna- Part three is yet to be released

What is the order here, if I buy this one should I also buy Rise of Vecna Vol 2 and Academy of Adventure Vol 1? are they in the same series or slightly different from each other? TYIA

Not a contributor, but I have AoA and RoV.

For defined modules, it would be AoA Volume 1, RoV Vol 2, and the upcoming Vol 3. The Gazeteer just provides background of what is going on around these adventures. The modules take characters sequentially into in the Doomed Forgotten Realms. Vol 1 is introductory for players at level 1. It is lighthearted and a great way to learn how to play (or DM). However, all is not what it seems, and it can lead directly into Vol 2 for levels 3-10. The adventure can end there or lead into Vol 3.

I would say the Gazeteer is not strictly needed if you are going with the modules, but if your players go off the plot in any of those modules, this product will give you a lot of things to keep them busy. Or, it can enrich the modules with nonessential information.

If you prefer less structure, this product by itself would provide a setting within which the DM would need to create content for the various hooks that are given in the text or whatever...See more

I like the idea of this book but I am a little confused why Vecna is the big bad. He's a Greyhawk villain and a very minor demigod in that realm and wouldn't have any interest in the forgotten realms were he wouldn't even rank among the weakest deities. Someone like Szass Tam whom was actually featured in the Yawning Portal boom and would make more sense, since he actually made a deal with demons, employs them often and very much a power hungry for a lich with a whole nation of undead and demon loving wizards at his beck and call.

Hey Jason,

This is a great question and Im glad you asked it here. Ive seen other people ask similar questions -- sometimes less diplomatically :) Before answering it though I should point out that Im only one part of the Doomed Forgotten Realms team and am only speaking for myself:

1) To *me* Vecna is considerably more interesting than Ssazz Tam. Vecna has been around since the earliest editions of DND. His Hand and Eye have been updated in pretty much every edition. He has had some iconic adventures such as Vecna Lives and Die, Vecna, Die featuring him. He has a well-established cult, interesting allies, and is one of the most recognized names in DND. All in all he resonates with me more than Ssazz Tam. Obviously not everyone feels the same way but at the end of the day I need to write about what I am passionate about.

2) It is true that Vecna originally hails for Greyhawk. And to be honest I would have loved to have written a Vecna story in Greyhawk but we are...See more

I'm curious if you all considered Tharizdun as the ultimate BBEG behind it all, as it's something I've thought about a lot. As the Evil Elemental Eye, he already has an underlying influence on the events of Princes of the Apocalypse and Out of the Abyss. Storm King's Thunder mentions some ideas about the Cults of Elemental Evil working with giants and about certain elemental primordials also influencing the giants. It seems like perhaps a being such as the Evil Elemental Eye could be the one whispering to those primordials and also the kraken. As the one who created the Abyss, it seems like he could easily also be manipulating Lloth to manipulate Gromph Baenre to bring the demon lords to the Underdark, perhaps he was even involved in Lloth's original fall from the Seldarine. As the creator of the Abyss, he would also pre-date the Blood War and could have been an original corrupting influence, even if indirectly, to Asmodeus and Zariel. Maybe he was the one who manipulated Sammaster into misreading the old dragon...See more

The fun is, you don't "need" to use Vecna..just replace him with anyone else, like Tharizdun.

So, if in the Rise of Vecna adventure we learn that "It's Been Vecna All Along" and that we're trying to stop him from taking over, but the Gazetteer presents a world already under his rule, does that mean that in addition to assuming all the 5e adventures got the bad ending, it *also* assumes Rise of Vecna got the bad ending? Cuz that's hilarious.

I would really like an expansion on each of the new holds and they’re ran.

Being a sucker for Devils and Descent into Avernus, I could see Helldor’s Gate being a place of brutal tyranny; where civilians are enslaved with the penalty of being turned into a lemure for disobedience. Hell they’ll probably have Lemures roaming around the populus. They need to be sprayed with holy water to utterly kill them after all.

The ideas are endless

I <3 everything about this idea. I always ask myself ok what happens after the module? Well, these guys took that and ran with it and did it in a fun way. Does this count as Grim dark? Maybe? Will there be comparisons to the Midnight setting? probably. does it matter? No! I for one think it was long past time the Realms got taken down a peg and i love the idea that the major players just bailed.
I will be doing a full review of it on my Youtube so check it out.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
