The Vault of Castuvius

A Heist in a Wizard's Theft-proof Vault!

For DM's eyes only...

An evil artifact has been stolen and is currently held in the theft-proof vault of the evil wizard Castuvius, to be sold to highest bidder. The party have been hired to get the powerful item before it falls into the hands of dark powers. They are instructed to try to bargain with Castuvius first, but if they cannot get it fairly, then take it by subterfuge.

Several Unique Locking Puzzles...

Outer locked vault doors are the first step to overcome, with no handles and no locks, only an eye slit from which stare the glowing eyes skeleton of a huge skeleton. How are the doors operated? Are they magic? What are are the skeletons for? Can they be killed? Should they be?

A series of locked vault doors, protected against magics, which require a combination of keys to open. The party must determine how the combinations work. There is a number on each vault door, but how does that relate to the keys? Can the locks be picked?

But even if the first door is opened, the party must quickly open the second, as the doors cannot be all opened at the same time. And there is a very short timespan in which to figure out how to open the doors, whether by key or lockpick...

The complex vault and all other levels of the house are mapped out in both DM and Player versions, including for VTT use, simply drag and drop them into your game. Designed in full detail for Roll20, the maps easily scale for any system.

Exploring the Manse

Clues to unlocking this immense vault are to be found around the house. But then so is imminent death. Castuvius and the other denizens of the house all have their own agenda, and none are what they seem. At every turn there are characters offering help, but only for their own gain.

Every room has its own "read aloud" description is detailed in full with several unique magic items. There are a number of challenging encounters, tuned for an 8th level party, several of which will give little warning.

Included in the adventure are handouts for the players, fully realistic (but readable!) with clues to help the careful player discover the secrets to the vault without being slaughtered in the first room.

Threat Level High

Although this adventure is written for campaign play, it is designed to punish the unwary. It is not a dungeon crawl, it is a giant, complex trap, with a strong possibility of a TPK. It will reward the wary, and slaughter the brash. And prevent the slovenly, there is an imminent time limit.

Castuvius is full of surprises. There may be something to the urban legend that tells of the underground corridor lit by hundreds of tiny candles, one for every thief who has died trying to rob him...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
