The Barbican is packed tonight as crowds gather to watch foolhardy adventures take on an Ancient Green Dragon. Twelve groups have entered, and none have lasted more than a minute. The patron’s laughter, cheering, and boastful discussions fill the air. No one mocks those that tried, instead the failed parties find themselves with free drinks for the rest of the evening, placing their own bets on the next hopeful party of adventurers.

The Barbican is a faux-battle arena suitable easily placed in any adventure. Complete with descriptions, NPCs, and tournament suggestions.

Product History

The initial idea for a death-free battle arena came after playing Curse of Strahd and wondering how differently some of the battles would have been if we had not been so concerned with staying alive.

Later my own children began playing Lost Mines of Phandelver and saw the way my youngest child reacted after a particular challenging fight, she was geniunely afraid of the deaht of her character. I realised this could be solved in a similiar way.

When the group decided they would like to try Strixhaven, I realised this would be the perfect environment for a battle arena. Students would want practice their skills in environments that literally felt real. While the design was made with Strixhaven in mind, it will very easily port to any location. In the Wild Beyond the Witchlight, the NPC Proprieters become carnies casting Mighty Fortress. Or The Barbican becomes a drawcard in a major city, such as Waterdeep.

Other Strixhaven Resources:

Strixhaven Prospectus v2: A 14-page handout for new players, giving them the chance to know the type of things that the students would know. (published)

The Barbican: A vibrant social location for central campus, in which students are able to participate in faux combat battles, cheering on their friends, and being goaded into facing ridiculous monsters, such as an ancient dragon. (published)

The Strixhaven Rangings: Every year the students must range into the wider world. Away from the watchful eye of faculty, the rangings are a test of resourcefulness, students must use the skills and abilities gained during their time at the most prestigious university in the known planes. (published)

Upcoming resources:

Strixhaven Subjects for New Players: Developing a series of classes that could be roleplayed in a way to teach new players how to use aspects of their character. From VSM101, to Intro to Combat 101. Instructors give students practical instructions.

Strixhaven Subject Guide: Leaning into the idea the subjects should all give small rewards, and completely a major should ensure a boon.

The Strixhaven Mixers: A guide to what parties are happening, and when. How better a way to give your players meaningful choices than to throw raging parties the night before their exams!

The Strixhaven Calendar: Exam Dates, Holidays, Barbican Battles, Campus sports, and other entertainment.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
