The Queen of Spades

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Six murders in a single night! A major city in the Forgotten Realms is rocked by a series of gruesomely bizarre deaths of notable citizens. What mysterious murderer could have slain six people in different corners of the city? Why did the criminal leave a playing card at each scene? Could a high-stakes card game that happened ten years ago explain the goings-on? And, most importantly, is the goddess of misfortune personally involved?

So you love murder mysteries but...

...are tired of railroading, unintuitive clues and overly convoluted plots?

...your players are bored to tears because of the slower pacing?

...have to stick to levels 4 and below because speak with dead is a thing?

...think doppelgangers and lycanthropes aren't the only possible villains in such plots?

Say no more. Your quest for fantasy whodunnits ends here.

The Queen of Spades is a mystery adventure for 7th-level PCs that does the following:

  • Written for Tier 2 characters and challenges both the players’ wits and their characters’ powers;
  • Recognizes the fact that player knowledge can substitute for character knowledge and vice versa, and doesn’t punish players or their characters for that;
  • Acknowledges the presence of magic and the supernatural, treats them as a boon rather than a burden, places no arbitrary limits on mystery-solving spells, and actually encourages the use of magic to further the investigation;
  • Keeps the number of clues and locations, and the general amount of information, manageable and narrowed-down;
  • Assumes a plethora of different approaches to solving investigative puzzles and provides the DM with enough rules support in dealing with them, without implying one specific sequence of actions necessary to solve the case;
  • Has enough twists and turns to maintain a sense of mystery without being too convoluted in its plotting or cumbersome in actual play.

Other features of the adventure:

  • Rarely used antagonist steeped in Faerûnian lore!
  • Mixture of humorous and serious elements!
  • New monsters and NPCs, including a high-level threat known as The Queen of Spades!
  • Rules for three fantasy games of chance!
  • Handouts! Everyone loves handouts!
  • Dozens of illustrations!
  • Enough content for two to four sessions of gaming!

    It provides a compelling mystery for the players and allows them to investigate it in their own way and discover different things depending on their methods. It has a great backstory and villains, which provide plenty of material for the DM. I enjoyed running it at my table... and I hope it will do the same for you. Recommended! --- Merric Blackman

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
