Question for the Gunslinger and Black Powder weapons: What is the purpose of having a light black powder weapon such as the six shooter? Is the intent that you can use your bonus action to fire a gun? If so I'd recommend adding it to the black powder expert feat since nothing in the game gives you the ability to shoot a firearm with a bonus action. If that's not the design intent what is the purpose of the light fire arms? I get the vibe that the fantasy is to dual wield six guns but how do you make that happen?

Minor query about the Circle of the Bond Druid subclass; I'm thinking about allowing additional animal companion options outside of the one's given in the PDF, should the max CR for an animal summoned be up to 1/2, or 1/4 like the Beast Master Ranger?

Kind Regards
James

Hey I was looking into buying the pdf version of this book, but think it's a very steep price if I don't know if I end up finding any of the classes interesting. The preview doesn't seem to want to load, no matter how long I let it load, if I have an ad blocker on or if I am logged into my account. I've also tried different browsers and incognito mode but alas. Is there anywhere else I can look at that preview or even get a short description of every archetype?

I think this would make a fantastic product for the Fantasy Grounds Virtual Tabletop. If you search my name (Rob Twohy) here on DMs Guild you can see we've done this over 400 times. We offer this service at NO COST. It will be more exposure for your product and a new audience as well. Feel free to contact me in Facebook Messenger (http://m.me/rob.twohy.7) and I will explain how it all works.
(That is, if you haven't already found someone to work with)

In the preview I noticed Rune Sage Barbarian doesn't get advantage on maintaining concentration, but the Sage does. Is that correct? Why one and not the other?

**Editi, the Sylvan Wanderer does.

It is correct. The Rune Sage has features the Sylvan Warden does not have and vice versa. The way these two spellcasting archetypes interact with the core Barbarian class features are quite different.

Will any of the fixes be added to the pdf and updated before I could order the hardcover such as the updated curse of lycanthropy subclass and such?

There will be no content updates. There will be an errata sheet in the coming days or weeks but it will not be incorporated into the text itself for logistical reasons. Also, the errata itself is fairly short.

Absolutely loving the book, but I do have some gripes. It feels quite strange to me that weapons like the sai and war fan deal bludgeoning damage and aren't finesse. It doesn't really represent how I picture the weapons being used. Then there are also some abilities and subclasses I'm not a huge fan of, particularly ones that let you know the hit points of other creatures. That feels far too game-y to me. And some spells, especially Seal Fate, honestly just seem a bit *too* strong. Of course, the benefit of third-party content is that I can pick and choose what and how I use it, and there is still more than enough content I love here! The Sorcerer subclasses are an absolute standout, and I'm about to play a Demolitionist Artificer and cannot wait to give that subclass a go.

Why does the quietude level 3 feature contain "Barbarian class features that apply while you are
raging also apply while you are in quietude."? I'm sure it's not the intention, but this is written in a way where it sounds as if the player would gain the benefits of *raging* in and of itself, not to mention the fact that *while raging*, a barbarian can't concentrate on spells.

Any feature that mentions it applies only while you're raging applies also while you are in quietude. You gain no benefits (or limitations) of raging while in quietude.

$91.19?! I really want this, but that's quite a hefty price, and one that I don't believe I can afford to pay.

I totally get that Jerry. Unfortunately the book costs a flat $51ish to print and I have no say in or ability to change that. If you do pdfs, the digital book is a great option or you could always check back in the next big site wide sale.

I totally understand the reasoning behind it. It's just a very steep price for me to justify paying, particularly with the amount of money that I've spent on Kickstarters for board games and stuff the past few years.

Yeah, this what makes it impossible to add this kind of stuff to my game, the cost is way too much for me or my players. It looks great in the preview though!

I really enjoy the book overall, but I am curious about why the Lycanthropy subclass for the Accursed seems to be missing? Especially considering the artwork for the class is of a werewolf. It's a bit disappointing, as it was the subclass I was most interested in trying upon learning about the class.

Again though, the book is still great and worth picking up!

I'm sorry you were disappointed by that. If you already own the Accursed class I believe the remastered version of that subclass is planned to be released relatively soon. Ross has a Twitter and discord where you can probably get more up to the minute info on that!

Oh that's a lot of juicy subclasses v_v; As a homebrewer myself I love seeing the great works of others. I gotta know, do the monk subclasses have good flavor and lore :3?

I'm not sure my opinion on the subject is very objective but I think our monk subclasses have great flavor and lore (and mechanics!).

Bit hesitant to buy atm because I think I've bought some of its contents individually before, but I do have a question if I may!
It seems to support Ross' Accursed class and your Pugilist, so I'm quite interested as to why you didn't also include anything for the other classes you've both made (Scholar, Spiritualist, Magus, or other OAP stuff). It's not a problem, I'm legitimately just curious since this seems to be a rather good compendium-style book from the pair of you (and others).

Even if you've bought previous books in the Complete Handbook series, the Accursed, *and* the Pugilist, just about everything has been updated with modern design conventions. Some subclasses, especially from CMH, had to be completely redesigned to work with the modern design changes. All that to say that we didn't rest on our laurels in any aspect of this book's design, and I think you'll find plenty of new even in the contents you previously purchased.

And we chose to do only the best-selling of each of our classes so the book wouldn't be even larger than it currently is, which would run the risk of making the PoD even more of a luxury item. We wanted very badly for the physical version to cost less than $100.

"Modern Design Conventions"?

Okay nevermind, I'll pass on this then. I don't like the modern design conventions one bit and will actively avoid anyone who uses them.

We still hold true to the principals of balance, just made use of some of the new systems and reworked some stuff to be compatible with the new changes. The rampant, out-of-control power creep us not present in this book.

@Damian

What Ross means is that the classes have been updated to include the newest spells from WotC and balanced some of the earlier iterations of the features. You can look for yourself; The races have not changed to fit Tasha’s quite bland rules. I understand that you (like I) do not like the way WotC has been designing newer sourcebooks, but the OGL hasn’t been updated for awhile so you can still find the older 5e features on both Kickstarter’s and DMG products. Trust me: It will take until at least 2024 before creators will start making major shifts toward this so-called 5.5e.

Damian F April 16, 2022 11:01 am UTC
@Liz M - perhaps you're right and I may have been too hasty in my judgement. You're right that the races match the old ways, which did pique my interest. Alas I was quick to speculate the worst since other major creators have already begun changing gears (like the new MME or Epic Heroes stuff). Apologies to Ross for being a bit too harsh on him there.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
