The Atlas of Dread: An Expanded Guide to Ravenloft

Now Available for Fantasy Grounds!

Fear is the single thread that sews every living thing together. Fear is an essential emotion: it haunts your past, waits in your future, and lingers in the edges of your present like a hungry animal, lurking until you lower your guard and stumble face-first into horrors unknown.

It’s because of fear that you prepare for the worst; it’s fear of failure that makes you learn from your mistakes; you mortals cling to what you have because you fear the day you’ll lose it all. Love, happiness, hope—every bright and wondrous corner of your heart is set ablaze because you endure the all-encompassing terrors of the world.

Intoxicating, isn’t it?

The Atlas of Dread is an illustrated guide to Ravenloft and an expansion to the content introduced in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft.

More Dark Gifts

To accompany the Dark Gifts in Van Richten's, this book introduces four new Dark Gifts to tempt your players with:

  • Cursed Eyes that bestow misfortune on whomever they spot
  • Forbidden Speech that grants mastery over the written and spoken word
  • Spark of Hellfire to devastate one's surroundings
  • The mark of those Spurned by Death, destined to rise from their grave as a monster

More Domains of Dread

The second chapter of the book describes seven new and original Domains of Dread and their fearsome Darklords, all fit to weave into your Ravenloft campaigns:

  • Bhasmont, a war-torn city of bones and catacombs, ruled by its prince necromancer Henri Demort
  • Duerwood, a forest where nature (represented by one Darklord, The Rot) and industry (represented by another, Baron Mikhail Volpin) struggle for dominance
  • Everice Station, an arctic research colony ruled by the rogue artifical intelligence Beloved
  • Lowbridge, a small town haunted by a bodyswapping serial killer, The Watcher
  • Morei, a desert filled with the restless corpses of thieves and robbed of its riches by Abaddon, the vengeful steed of a long-dead outlaw
  • Murkhaven, a fishing hamlet where cosmic horror (and the drowning Darklord, Sylvia Weir) lurk just beneath the water's surface
  • Nekessa, a volcanic plains where warriors clash in blood sports for the honor of the Darklord Lady Lucille Octavian

Ravenloft Sidekicks

The third section of the book takes the Sidekick rules from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and spins them into five new characters to accompany your heroes:

  • Eli Frost, a bartender-turned-paranormal investigator working to protect his town
  • Gabriel, a paladin of Ezra that searches for an end to the rule of Darklords
  • Lara Kessler, an escaped test subject searching for her sister and evading her mind flayer experimentors
  • Leon Romero, an undying gunslinger cursed with the hand of a fallen Darklord
  • Sabine Gagnon, an occult scholar searching for answers to the great mysteries of Ravenoft—and the death of her mother

More Creatures

The fourth and final section of the book introduces 15 new stat blocks and 1 new template for Ravenloft-themed monsters and NPCs.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
