Thay Land Of The Red Wizards

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

szass_tam(1).jpgKnown to the wider Forgotten Realms® as a sinister land
of Red Wizards, slavers, and marching undead armies,
Thay is the distant—or uncomfortably close—menace that
“may become our doom if Szass Tam turns his attention
in our direction.”

And Thay is that, but it is also so much more. A truly
magical land (thanks to a secret that even the goddess
Mystra helps to keep) of rich culture, a rising middle class,
ambitious nobles and Red Wizards who fear Szass Tam
more than they hate him, but may soon be forced to defy
him, and wealth beyond the imaginings of even wealthy
and proud realms elsewhere.

This tome is your guide to the Thay of right now, a
valuable resource for Dungeon Masters and players alike.
It sets forth the people and places of the Land of Red
Wizards, what life is like, and seeds, hints, and secrets
sufficient to spur adventures for years of enjoyment at
your gaming tabToC(4).jpgle.

Hello! This book is amazing, and I'm going to be making a YouTube video that goes over Red Wizard lore (and possibly future videos on other aspects of Thay) that uses this book as one of its main sources. I was wondering how I would go about getting permission to use the artwork from this book? The art is awesome and you really can't find many visual examples of what the people and land of Thay look like elsewhere.

Still reading the book, so far chapter 3 and 5 still to read.

However the Weavebound Paladin is weird, by RAW it seems there's no way for it to gain it's capstone ability.
As it requires 2 levels of Wizard before going into Paladin the max Paladin level one can get at it is lv 18.

Also level 15 ability Crafting the Pattern seems at first glance very situational, one would to be at least level 17, and then sacrifice full day and 5000 gold to become at most 10th level Wizard while staying 10th level Paladin (when level 20, if 15 Paladin and 5 Wizard) gaining 5th level spells and some extras?

Not daft at all!

The narrative direction for fifth edition Dungeons and Dragons is to uncouple from strict DR timelines - this allows players and DMs to place their games whenever they wish (more or less). As one of the people behind some of the narrative decisions that were made within the Adventurers League, some of which are reflected in this tome, I would place the year at around DR 1494. This allows for the events of Princes of the Apocalypse (hardcover), the devastation of Mulmaster (one of the DDAL Epics), the discovery of the pyramid beneath the Glacier of the White Wyrm (DDAL00-01), Dar'lon Ma's ascent to power (various adventures), and more to have already comfortably occurred.

Yes, she is the Zulkir of Necromancy, and this book assumes that her mission in Chult in Tomb of Annihilation was a success.

How much of the book is 5e content or is it mostly system agnostic? Is it meaty enough for those using different systems to get a cool setting out of?

Haven't read it cover to cover yet but it's about 60% system agnostic lore* with the rest being a handful of character options, monsters and a short adventure. The lore portion is very detailed, with lots of specifics regarding locations and major characters in Thay. There's also a lot of info regarding different power struggles that have arisen, or might arise in your campaign. I think it would be exceptionally adaptable.

*Depending on how finicky you are about the details, there is one thing that sticks out a little bit in the lore. The highest council below the ruler of Thay are the 8 Zulkirs, which each represent a specific school of magic. These Zulkirs very blatantly reflect the 8 traditional schools of magic in the D&D system. Conceptually, of course, the schools are quite generic (conjuration, necromancy etc.) and would fit into most systems involving magic. But the specific number and names might stick out a bit as being a clear holdover from the book's D&D roots.

It is a good product. It allows you to craft an immersive campaign/adventure in Thay but leaves it wide open for you to craft the narrative. Given the high stakes and the power of a Red Wizard, I had higher hopes for the included adventure, but overall I liked the book. It gives a lot of detail about life in Thay.

My hardcover copy just arrived today and cannot express how awesome this is!!! I love lore on the Red Wizards, especially since they're the main villains in my homebrew campaign (SKT HC + AL modules that help the overall storyline). Also thank you, @Ben R for giving yet another resource to get lore/info on the origins of Red Wizards!

is there much about szass tam covered? the table of contents didn’t have a 12 page section called Szass Tam which obv has to an oversight. =p i am more interested in lore or hints about his future plans than stat blocks if that matters. i hope to purchase the pdf regardless of the Szassness of the content, but my curiosity runs amok. thx info ~

Szass Tam is certainly present, though he has no stat block. Most of the book is lore on the country of Thay itself - getting out and away from the Thaymount and telling you about the other zulkirs, the other citys, the tharchions, etc. But Tam is of course always hovering. For more Red Wizard lore from the man who knows, I recommend in addition to this getting "Tyrants in Scarlet" which is also here on the Guild and gives the secret origins of the Red Wizards.

Review 8/10
This book gives a meaty serving of world building to replace the bland and unremarkable understanding of the Thayan presence in Faerun. It provides seasoned or knowledge-hungry players and DMs with a developed written world to consume. It’s only real drawback is a lack of accessibility. This is not a casual text.

Writing quality 8/10
There are some editing mistakes. I find this to be a seemingly unnecessary blemish on an otherwise well written book. It’s glaringly obvious, from the bulk of the work, that they can and did do better. So errors stand out.

Lore 10/10
An engaging telling of the Thayan way of life, from the manure-covered farmer to the Lich Ruler.
A narrative unveiling of the Red Wizards weaknesses, as individuals and as an organization.
Szass Tam’s personality is fully fleshed. Did you know that Szass Tam’s primary motivator is love?
I really like the multiple conflicting parties inside the Red Wizards. It...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
