The sequel to the Platinum-bestselling An Elf and an Orc Had a Little Baby. 32 New and Expanded Parentages and a Whole Host of New Upbringings!

An Elf and an Orc Had a Little Baby 2 is a 91-page rules supplement that, together with the original, entirely replaces chapter 2 of the Player’s Handbook. Instead of D&D’s bioessentialist approach, this title separates biological traits and cultural traits into two categories: parentage and upbringing.

To create a new player character using this supplement, players choose two birth parents and an upbringing. (Then they go on to choose a background and class, as normal.) Players can feel free to create any combination to create a unique and vibrant character.

Inside this title, you’ll discover

  • 32 New and Expanded Parentages, from abeil to wraith;

  • 20+ New Upbringings, from being raised by air mages to wary folk;

  • a robust system for making your own upbringing options.

FAQ

When choosing traits, if I take a trait with a cost of -2, does that mean I can spend 18 points instead of 16?

Yes, exactly.

Are these compatible with the new mordekainens reworks???

No, not exactly. "An Elf and an Orc Had a Little Baby" and its sequel completely replace chapter 2 of the Player's Handbook and any other D&D "races" wherever they are found.

Hello! I am incredibly excited to look more into your guides to mixed heritage. However, I've noticed that Rakshasas and Dhampir parentages are not included in either of the two books. Are/would they be considered for volume three?

Many thanks!

Hello!

The dhampir is really a mixed vampire, so you can make one using parentage traits from the vampire entry + one other.

We'll think about including rakshasas in another volume.

Thanks!

Hi! These are so cool. The next time I run a game, am totally using this in place of the current heritage/race system. Question? Now that the Spelljammer/Dragonlance races are pretty much officially added, any plans to add a mini supplement to include them? I'd really love to see what a half-plasmoid might be like.
Kudos again for a rad product!

how do I determine the character size using this book? The first book included sizes and I want to do a halfling mixed race, but I don't see height modifiers. Is it safe to assume that a Medium race and Small race mix will be on the lower end of Medium?

Good question!

We made some substantial changes after LegalKimchi did a sensitivity reading. One of those was to not be so prescriptive about height. That being said, you can still determine whether or not your character is Small. If you inherit the Little trait from both your birth parents, your size is Small. If you inherit the Little trait from only one or neither birth parent, your size is Medium.

Do you need to buy the first book and the second book, or would 2 be fine without 1 vise versa. What would you prefer?

Awesome product, really well done. Quick question. Goblinoid trait 'Reserves of Strength (7 Points). This seems really strong, is there supposed to be a limited number of uses?

No, it's written as intended. We're confident that the it's pretty balanced relative to their other parentage options in the book.

Any advice for using the races from the first book with the points system? I want to make a child for my orc character and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the options. Do I take the features from the orc pages and then spend 8 points in the other book?
Customer avatar

If you've downloaded the latest file of the original title, it and the sequel both use the point-buy system. We changed it after getting some very good feedback from our sensitivity reader, LegalKimchi, about how people might share the same parents but have different physical characteristics. It's 8 points for each of the two birth parents, or 16 total.

That being said, you can make it simple by choosing any two of the sample birth parents.

I love this series so much. Any chance of getting the two volumes bundled together into one big POD book? I'd love to add this to my 5e shelf.

That would be wonderful, but we'd have to obtain the funds to hire a proper layout designer. My layout design skills don't extend to POD, unfortunately.

Hi all! I love these books for character creation, and I've built a solo game just to test out the possible combos. (Adventurers do a dungeon run, meet various creatures, creatures get folded into the next generation to do a dungeon run basically!) That said, any recommendations on creating new parents that aren't in your books? (Troglodytes being the example parent type I couldn't yet find!)

Also, in your first volume, in the introduction you mention that certain subtypes (like elves having various subtype options from canon) might be clarified using roman numerals, but I don't see that play out throughout the book. If you update An Elf and an Orc Had a Little Baby in the future, would it be possible to update Elves, Gnomes, Dwarves, Halflings with the roman numeral system? It'd make having 'parent 1: elf' be easier to determine what are viable traits if they are drow vs Eladrin, for example! (Also Also: with Fizban's Treasury of Dragons I don't suppose there might be options coming for gem dragonborn...See more

On page 31 under superior natural armor under giants there is no dex limit unlike other examples in the book such as on pages 18 and 26. Is that an error?

Thanks

Great product, however:

in the vampire section "birth parent 2"; there is the ability "harmed by water" quoted. This ability is not described though in the vampire section. Could you fix that? Thank you.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
