Introduction to Adventures in Argenthril content

The Twin Disciple Monk is a new subclass for DnD 5E from my campaign called Adventures in Argenthril. A setting connected to the Forgotten Realms which adds a lot of content to the world and which also adds several new subclasses; many of which feature much more active abilities than the ordinary subclasses from WoTC.

Lore Synopsis

The Twin Disciples do not perform using Ki in the same ways that other monastic traditions do. They instead strive to create the ultimate combination of defense and offence by having their Ki internalized as a radiant heat which they garner by experiencing and overcoming strife; thus making their defense strength turn into offensive power. Their focus on a balanced way of fighting has led them to embrace both sides of this Heat, making it shield them and harden their skin akin to steel in a defensive stance and having it erupt into fire in an offensive stance; making them the able to dance between the two stances to become the perfect warrior during combat.

Ability Synopsis

Steel and Flame: You do not use your abilities with Ki and instead use Heat which starts at 1 and increases at a pace of 1 per round, getting hit by any form of damage also causes you to gain extra Heat. This Heat can be used as normal for Ki fueled abilities but can also be used to swap between the offensive Dragon Stance and the defensive Steel Stance.

Dragon Stance and Steel Stance: You can fight in one of two stances which change what kind of abilities you can use Heat for. The first is the defensively geared Steel Stance which aims to retain and generate Heat which gives you a bonus to your AC and resistance against fire damage when active; in addition to this you store 1d6 every time you are harmed and can apply the total rolled as temporary hit points to yourself by expending Heat. The second is the offensively geared Dragon Stance which causes you to deal extra fire damage on the first attack which you make and which can create a cone of pressured flames by expending Heat.

Skin of Fiery Steel: The Heat within you also starts to radiate out of your body once enough of it has been generated. This makes any target grappled by you take fire damage at the start of each of their turns if you have 5 Heat or above if you’re in the Dragon Stance or gives you resistance against the first physical instance of damage which occurs to you if you’re in the Steel Stance.

Unmovable Object and Unstoppable Force: The release of heat can not only make you incredibly resilient, but also be so explosively released that it can send people flying. You can cause attacks to knock creatures back if you are in the Dragon Stance or cause melee attackers to take recoil damage if they strike you whilst you are in your Steel Stance if their AC is lower than yours.

Prepared Meditation: Whilst meditating during any rest, you can mentally prepare to either retaliate or defend yourself against a certain scenario. When said scenario occurs, you either gain the ability to make several attacks as a reaction using your Dragon Stance or shield yourself with temporary hit points and advantage on a saving throw if you’re in the Steel Stance.

Dragon Unleashed: You gain mastery over the Dragon Stance and can perform a devastating kick which deals damage on a hit and sends the target flying, the target taking additional damage if it collides with another object.

Adamantine Soul: You gain mastery over the Steel Stance and can succeed on a wisdom saving throw whenever you take damage, thus taking no damage if your willpower is great enough to translate the incoming attack to Heat on a success.

Alternative Thematics

One's character is not set in stone whilst playing any Adventures in Argenthril subclass as the document features alternative themes to use for the character. The following alternative themes are detailed in the document for your use, or to get your brain working on your own theme:

  • The Dragon Monk: The swapping between stances could instead be based upon the good metallic dragon kin and the evil chromatic dragon kin. The good natured metallic dragons inspiring the Steel Stance and the evil chromatic dragons inspiring the destructive Dragon Stance.

  • The E-Monk: Instead of Heat, you could be charging the powers of lighting within yourself. The powers of lighting being charged in your Steel Stance and released in your Dragon Stance, thus swapping all fire damage for lightning and thunder damage instead.

Epilogue

The subclass is based upon my own setting but works in any setting and is made with the belief that all PCs can be roleplayed well, no matter the class or subclass; with those beliefs in mind the subclass is made to spice up combat with more active abilities and an evolving way of play as you level up, while keeping an unique thematic which you can build your own character on.

Observe the ending Epilogue on the PDF for more detailed information and different ways to adapt the subclass for your character and game. There may also be ambient music for reading or attempts at jokes in the PDF, enjoy the reading!

Miscellaneous Info

The general difficulty of this class is ranked Difficult to play due to the need to make use of both stances and take risks to build Heat; keep in mind that the combat focused kit often leads to the class being more active, difficult to play and slightly more powerful in combat than the average subclasses from WoTC.

The Twin Disciple Monk Is a part of Generation 2 along with the following subclasses:

  • The Marauder Ranger (Which use The Revised Ranger from Gen 1)

  • The Marksman Ranger (Which use The Revised Ranger from Gen 1)

  • The Revised Monk

  • The Sky Strider Fighter

  • The Spirit Ronin Fighter

  • The Crimson Pact Warlock

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
