The mood of the forward camp matched the dreariness of the low-hanging clouds overhead. It didn’t take a Haruspex to see that these were not the same soldiers who’d set out on their expedition a month ago. All one had to do was walk by the medical tent and witness the gaping Falx wounds to see that. Their surviving comrades were little happier; most kept their heads down, busily affixing any scrap of iron available to their helmets, shields; the memories of what the long, curved Falxes had done to their comrades’ armor all too fresh in their minds.

A vulture circles the dark woods, the earlier sounds of chaos now replaced by the melodic rushing of a stream. The scavenger circles lower, plumes of smoke partially concealing what the forest had not yet reclaimed. Alighting on a helmet, the relative aerial order gives way to the mayhem on the ground.
Crumpled bodies. Crushed armor. Broken weapons. A smoldering swath of forest looks promising, piles of uncharred bodies evidence the number that, in their final moments, chose death by the sword in favor of extinction by fire.
