Vegetable Patch of Death

Somewhere between “out-of-the-way” and “I think we’re lost...”

Far to the west in a neglected corner of the map lies the Cloakbowl ForestThe thick, ancient canopy allows only meager sunlight to fall on the rocky, root-filled soil, but some brave souls have succeeded in carving out occasional plots of arable land. Around these humble homesteads have grown tiny woodland villages, populated by imperial outcasts, military refugees, retired adventurers, and idealists too odd or too poor to be welcome in “normal” society.

In one such village, on one such farm, a strange ailment has been preventing the villagers from harvesting a hearty crop of the tasty wild leeks known as ramps. To add insult to injury, ramps not only provide a welcome supplement to the local diet, but are a key ingredient in many of the medicines required to treat the bedridden farmers. With the days getting hotter, the ramps will soon flower and wilt and vanish into the soil, too late to be of any use, too bad, so sad.

Unbeknownst to seemingly anyone (foreshadowing!), the strange ailment is caused by something buried in the field. There is a treasure there, a powerful artifact that may have been placed in the field in a misguided attempt to chase away deer, but over time has lent lich-like powers to an otherwise unassuming boulder...

Will characters retrieve the artifact, avoiding the draining curse? Will they defeat the creeping terror that lies just under the surface? Will they escape the deadly sarcasm of the local busybodies? And most importantly, will they rescue the ramps?

Vegetable Patch of Death is an introductory adventure intended for a single 1st-level character and a DM, utilizing the sidekick rules found in either the D&D Essentials Kit or Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. (It also easily works for two 1st-level characters, but this was originally written at the height of the pandemic lockdown of 2020, so the author was aware that getting three people together in the same place could be a bit of a stretch.)

Included in the adventure are full-size battle maps, craftable paper minis, player reference sheets, a pair of quirky sidekicks, and an original creepy monster that had one playtester saying "NO NO NO NO THANK YOU" in adorable joyful horror.

Vegetable Patch of Death is the first in a series of one-player one-DM adventures set in and around the Cloakbowl Forest. The second installment, The Trouble at Tinker's Tower should come out in mid-2022.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
