Academy of Adventure

Welcome to the Academy of Adventure!

Much like Arcavios has Strixhaven, the Sword Coast has Headmaster Vance’s Academy of Adventure. No finer training can be found, either up or down the Sword Coast, than that of the Academy. Here, an adventurer can learn firsthand from the masters of their craft. The Academy currently serves as the training grounds for the next generation of heroes of the Forgotten Realms — the future Elminsters, Drizzts, and Laeral Silverhands of Faerûn.

Adventure Awaits

The Academy of Adventure is a fully fleshed out locale that can be easily inserted into any homebrew or published campaign. Also included is a modular adventure intended to take players from 1st to 3rd level. This product as a whole has enough material to accommodate more than 20 hours of gameplay, yet can be easily adapted to play as a one-shot.

Within this adventure’s hallowed halls can be found:

  • A fully fleshed out academy campus that includes an arboretum and a zoo.

  • Five additional adventuring parties which can serve as antagonists or allies – the Demodragons, Iconics, Marauders, Shadowslayers, and Meepo’s Minions!

  • Dozens of curricular encounters, ranging from socialization to battle, designed to teach the nuances of fifth edition to newer players while also challenging veterans.

  • Underground grottos filled with genetically engineered abominations, cheered on by students wagering over who can survive the longest.

  • The deadly Caves of Shadow, where a long dormant evil stirs from its ancient slumber.

  • A race against time to rescue a Thayan mage from a drow elf prison.

  • An epic encounter in Shadowfell Keep to save the world from the incursion of the Thing from the Portal.

  • A terrible secret so powerful that it will literally shatter the world of those who survive discovering it….

Although accessible to veteran players, the adventure is true to its name and provides many opportunities for the DM to “teach” the game to new players. It can easily be used as a springboard into any larger campaign, but is optimized as a lead-in to the Rise of Vecna, the second installment of the Doomed Forgotten Realms adventure path.

I've been blown away by all of the kind words, thoughtful questions, and kind corrections that the community has provided. However, the DMsguild Discussion section has become increasingly unwieldy. Because of this I have created a Discord server. I will continue to monitor the DMsguild discussion page but for more immediate feedback I encourage you to visit us there! Headmaster Vance will award extra credit to the first ten people there:

i made the drow encampment 40x40 as when you make it smaller trying to get 13 in the cage is a bit of a squeeze going lower.

Can i also request a map for the pit where the group is supposed to meet up for a couple of the scenes including the final encounter.

Hey Rory, this is a great idea. If you email me at smcclintock@wcupa.edu Ill see if I can whip something up really quick and send it your way (As well as eventually add it to the map pack here although that might take a bit more time). Also, in terms of any other errors you find if you could email them its easier for me to keep track of them. Very much appreciate it, as embarrassed as I am about there being so many :)

First off i have to say after a review about part 3 I finally bit the bullet and bought part one and then followed it up quickly by buying part two and then got part 3 today.
I have to say after reading a snippet of part one i was sold on the story right away and think this is amazing.

I have come across a small error with the kobold Scale Sorcerer on page 47. It states it is from Volo's Guide to Monsters and i get that you have also used the Monsters of the multiverse variant with the spells but it seems that the armor class and hp have been copied straight over from the Dragonshield, Ac 15 (leather and shield) HP 44 (8d6 + 14) now the Ac is correct but it is natural armor in both and the HP should be 27 (5d6 + 10) It is this way in VGtM, ToA and MMotM.

The Zorbo also has the ability scores of the Ogre Skeleton, instead of 13,11,13,3,12,7 which is the Zorbos proper stats it has 19,8,15,5,7,5 which would then make the attack not work out properly.

I also have noticed that the passive perception on both the ogre skeleton and shadow bat are wrong. the ogre skeleton has 7 wisdom (-2) but a PP of 9 where it should be 8 and the shadow bat has a wisdom of 10 (0) but a PP of 13.

oh there's one question that has been haunting some of my players ever since we started/played the AoA: Who is Dreadbeard based on? Everyone else in the Demodragons is (or seems to be) a Harry Potter reference ... but not Dreadbeard, or at least we can't figure it out. So, "who" is this guys xD?

Haha yeah good question, especially since Academy of Adventure has a ton of Easter eggs and most everyone is based on someone else. However! Dreadbeard is one of the few exceptions. He is based off a warlock character I briefly played in World of Warcraft. Although Ive watched all of the Harry Potter movies and read some of the books, it was all so long ago that I couldnt pull off an entire team of evil-themed Harry Potter adventurers.

Interesting synchronicity with this question because Steven O was just commenting (in another thread) that stats for the Demodragons should have been included in Volume 2 (And he's right!).

We are not finished yet, but here is a recommendation for v2.0!

If characters are going to go on to the Doomed Forgotten Realms (DFR), have them come up with or generate a "dark secret" during character generation. I used a modified table of RotIM and Doomed Forgotten Realms Sword Coast Gazetteer (can't just use the latter ones since from the character perspective DFR hasn't happened yet...).

Then at the end of Semester 2, play Secrets of the Whispered One as laid out.

Here is what I added, and my players loved it.

Tell the players that during the Whispered One game they will have the chance to try to learn a secret about one other player character. Offer an opt-out for any player, since they may have an idea about how the reveal is going to happen. If they opt out, they can't try to find another character's secret. (It's only fair for all to have skin in the game.)

Allow the player to role-play an attempt at Insight, Intimidation, or Persuasion...See more

My group did that last session as well (and got fried with a lightning bolt by a certain drow mage, but that's a different story)
Thanks to your and Scott's advice I decided to ditch the social deduction game and let them roll, granting them a secret of another character per 20 points they've reached. While it was a great opportunity to hint at some character secrets, I also used it as an opportunity to hint at the former lives of the characters (they are all reincarnations of persons who attempted 2 of the wotc modules and died)
Sadly it seems I'm bad at explaining the rules, because no one understood that a lie is only a lie if they share it with someone else. Maybe we'll come back to that next session, before they attempt the final exam

Oh, that is an interesting take. My players did naturally ask what secrets they had learned during the Whispered One game. Your approach capitalizes on that. OTOH, my players LOVED the RP they did in the asking and answering.

It might also be interesting to run it with the characters as "two truths and a lie."

I have to say, the maps pop into roll20 quite smoothly, I'm pleasantly surprised. Normally it's a pain.

I'm preparing the final exam right now and noticed a little contradiction between Kalarels statblock and the description of his actions: the description mentions he casts "shield" to repel incoming attacks, meanwhile the statblock lists "counterspell" instead with 3 uses and doesn't mention "shield" at all.

Considering how my group is breezing through encounters, I'll probably give him both, but I wanted to point it out.

(btw they overall seem to enjoy the academy so far, they really liked that little dungeon crawl through the caves and the interactions with the other students. One is even so excited about the campaign, he started to collect all info about characters, places, monsters etc they gained so far on one of those campaign-organize websites for his fellow players to look that stuff up xD)

Hey Tamara,

Thanks for pointing out the contradiction. We'll flag it for fixing it on the next update (Which should hopefully have those gridless maps as well!). Wizards of the Coast changed the stat block mechanics right in the middle of publication so Karakel originally had a more traditional caster's block and then we tried to update it to follow newer conventions reflected in the newest Mordenkainen book. Alas, that something was missed in the switch!

Ecstatic to hear that it's been going well! Hopefully graduation doesn't crush their hearts too much :)

In terms of breezing through stuff, do I recall you saying that your group had 5 players? If so that might be part of the "issue". Once we get Volume 3 fully finished and out the door maybe I can circle back and touch base with you for some thoughts on how it might be adjusted for 5 players and then post those suggestions somewhere for other players?

One of them already suspects that the iconics will die, either through the partys hand or because they'll sacrifice themselves to save the party.

Yes I have 5 players. I already tried to up the enemy numbers a bit, but I'm not very experienced as a dm (and still not used to all 5e rules on top of that) and also a bit afraid to overdo it ^^" maybe I should dare more to change stuff on the fly, like giving the big guys more hp if the party whittles them down to easily etc.

But some suggestions for varying party sizes might be cool. In my at least 10 years of pen & paper rpgs I was part of a 4 man party only once. Usually it's 5 or 6 players + DM (now I wonder if those bigger groups are a german phenomenon xD).

Tamara, it sounds like we started about the same time and I have a party of 5 as well. We are going more slowly though, due to busy people.

Scott, the party of 5 could have stomped frogs for as long as they wanted, so in that encounter, you might bump up the number of frogs that spawn each turn. They easily beat the other team''s virtual performance. You might mention that there is a school record of X frogs (maybe 20?) to keep teams going longer.

The field exercises worked well. I wanted to make it a contest like the frogs, but I didn't really know how many would be a challenge.

The semester one final I added the bard to the Iconics, but the players absolutely destroyed them in both contests. It did do a great job of showing a non-traditional use of shoving, but the poor Iconics couldn't push the damn scarecrow over haha!

Just starting second semester. On your advice I am going to add a social deduction game that Gutboy is going to propose the night after Whispers....See more

We have bigger groups out here in the states too. In fact I had to awkwardly exclude some people during playtesting to keep the numbers at the "WOTC standard" of 4. I think 5e is already balanced a bit in favor of the players, which Im fine with, but going beyond 4 really tips the scales heavily. Nonetheless, looking into rebalancing for higher player counts will be a fun future project. Thanks, as always, for the much appreciated feedback :)

In my group the Iconics failed on almost everything during the first test xD they got grappled by the party and couldn't escape or failed their saves vs sanctuary on the puppet and on their turn they failed to tumble the dummy and were unable to grapple my party xD gosh I rolled so badly that day xD

They also succeeded with ease at the clash of the killer frogs ALTHOUGH only 4 of them took part in it (the lg cleric of Tyr thought it was childish to try to "beat" the demodragons into submission that way xD). After beating 20 frogs they just left, barely harmed

I also want to do the social deduction game, but I'm still trying to figure out what's suited for my online group who only uses voice chat and vtt. Got two more weeks to decide on something not to costly ^^"

Hey Tamara, I found something online that inspired me...

How about Doppelganger (credit to https://www.brightful.me/blog/best-free-social-deduction-games-for-remote-workers/ for the idea)

One person is a Doppelganger. The game is that the party has decided on a safe word to protect against doppelgangers (which you give to the humans, perhaps a location in the Academy) but while they know there is a doppelganger, they don't know who it is. If a human asks another human for the safe word, the doppelganger learns it too. The doppelganger can overpower individuals so the group has to stay in the same room to decide.

You start the round with a vague description of the safe word that the doppelganger got from the victim it replaced (like "it is a location on campus"). The round is everyone describing the safeword, trying to convince everyone else they know the safeword but not giving it away so the doppelganger learns it.

After the round, the party votes...See more

That said, to Tamara, there's nothing wrong with playing the game as written -- ask the players how their characters approach the challenge, then just do some skill checks and move on with the adventure. Yeah, honestly Scott I am back to the original as you wrote it, without the social deduction game. I tried play testing it outside of the campaign and it seemed really out of place. I would even suggest you consider taking that out as a recommendation. I think it would just slow things down.

However, here is what I am now thinking of doing haha.

Since I knew I was going to put them in Rise of Vecna, I had them each create a deep, dark secret at character generation. I used modified tables from DFR (since this is pre-DFR times I can't use them as-is) and RotIM or let them create one of their own. (Another suggestion is to consider adding that as a step to character generation in AoA if they know they are going to RoV.)

As part of Secrets of the Whispered One I am going to allow them an opportunity to try to intimidate/persuade the secret from one player if they wish. The secret will only be shared with the winning character.

They will probably get to that this...See more

Hello! Soon I'll start dming this adventure with 5 of my friends and hope they won't hate me as soon as things start to turn dark (although I did warn them, that we won't stay in the happy academy forever)

Anyway I have a few questions:
- What happens if one of the PCs dies in the final encounter? Will the battle be stopped, as soon as only 4 or in my case 5 people are left standing (I decided to include Gimbel as the 5th Iconic (because bards where the best 3.5 class, hands down XP)), even if they're from different teams? Or will it continue until one group gets completely downed and the fallen Members of the winning party then get to live?

- As one of my players wants to be a fairy (damn you, witchlight!), is there any info about the feywild in the DFR? Is it still accessible? Has it changed? Or did the fey somehow seal it off to be save from Vecna and his influence?

- From feywild to shadowfell: does the raven queen play a role in this adventure path? Another one...See more

I just bought the Sword Coast Gazetteer so I can take a stab at these...

For the final test, see Scott's answer to me below for an idea about what to do. In my case it was if the party refuses to fight, but I think it could apply. Also, fudge rolls... :)

Feywild is not specifically mentioned. I think, based on the logic used, that it would be much more difficult to reach the feywild in the Doomed Forgotten Realms, whether this was a choice of the inhabitants or a consequence of stuff Vecna is has going on. I would love to hear Scott's take on this though.

About Shadowfell. Evernight has replaced Neverwinter - might be a good place for your cleric to get close to the Raven Queen. Shadowfell is definitely on the menu for Vecna. The Raven Queen is specifically mentioned as a high-level campaign hook in the Sword Coast Gazetteer. I think having a cleric of hers is going to be verrrry interesting!

Hey Tamara!

Thanks for your patience. (And also thanks to Steven for helping out!)

First off -- using Gimbel is amazing. Hats off to you :)

Second -- I would go ahead and make the fight to the "last one left standing". Even if one of the characters dies (ie fails their three death saves), its technically a "dream" so it wouldnt be a huge deal for them to be alive afterwards.

Third -- To be honest I didn't give a lot of thought to the Fey -- Wild Beyond the Witchlight came out after we started working on this project and I havent had the time to go through the book, let alone think about how to incorporate it into the larger story. That said I think its a great way to personalize your campaign and don't envision it contradicting anything in volumes 2 or 3.

Four -- I stayed away from the Raven Queen as I was told that we did not have the ability to use her in our products. I may or may not be right about this, but opted to...See more

Thank you for the insights Steven! Because of Evernight I was under the impression, that the planes closer to the material plane weren't affected by Vecnas scheme or at least not in the same way. Hey Francesco! It says you are a "Verified Purchaser" so it appears that I didn't get to you in time. Sorry about that, although we thank you for your purchase! As you suspected the Academy is the least essential part of the "package". We made it as a flexible product. On one part it can be a pretty straight-forward introductory adventure for the "normal" Forgotten Realms. However, it can also be run as an incubation dream experienced by the characters before they "awaken" as artificially acceleration organisms within the "Doomed" Forgotten Realms. The abrupt tone change is meant to be a powerful plot twist -- and it worked very well in my play tests. That said, I also imagine its not appropriate for every table and definitely NOT necessary to run and enjoy Volume 2.

If you have any further questions or if I can help in any other way please don't hesitate to shout out!

Hey Francesco,

Oops! Missed this question. Its a good one. To be honest Id also be a bit hesitant to leave too many clues -- once your players begin to smell something is fishy Id worry that they would start "resisting" the flow of the adventure -- in which case you might have to either do some creative improvising or railroad them to get them to the appropriate finale -- neither of which is optimal.

Im not sure that it makes a ton of sense if you analyze it too closely -- hence you might not want to do it. But I had two of my players discover skeletons of themselves in a hidden room that had an ominous message. They enjoyed it a lot and it led to lots of in-game comments about being stuck in inception loops.

We purposefully tried to avoid too much linkage in Volume 1 so that it could easily be used by beginning DMs as a generic introductory adventure to some other campaign. But your question makes me think that it would be fun to brainstorm some ways to better...See more

Hey Steven

Thanks for the great question! Appreciate the generous feedback :)

The ending is definitely a doozy and probably not for every table. My group got VERY attached to the Iconics. They were fine with how things unfolded but it was definitely a gut punch. The gut punch is helpful as it gives the characters a reason to hate Vecna and drive them through Volume 2. Otherwise he is a rather impersonal menace.

I think that after the characters kill the first "shadowy figure" and its revealed that they are fighting the Iconics, they are likely to try to make peace. However I think its also reasonable that the Iconics keep fighting and most groups will choose to fight back in self defense so there hopefully isnt a loss of agency. Some other ideas:

1) You could keep the Iconics shrouded as shadowy figures until the last one is slain.
2) You could just have the characters fight four shadows that are unrelated to the Iconics.
3) ...See more

Does this book lead into the Rise of Vecna adventure? I'm planning on running a new campaign and ultimately want my players to face off against him.

Hi Anthony! It does lead into Rise of Vecna, although the connection isnt evident until the very end. That said, if you want to save some $$$, you definitely don't need to have played Academy of Adventure to still enjoy Rise of Vecna :) Thanks for considering our products! If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

I would love to see this converted to Fantasy Grounds. I would plan for it to be my next campaign.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
