What is this book?

Strixhaven: A Syllabus of Sorcery is a companion book to Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos. This book expands upon the content provided in Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos in order to provide DMs with more ways to customize their Strixhaven campaign. The information contained in this book is completely modularized and can be added wherever you see fit to enhance your game.

This book contains:

  • 144 Class Events: Make the classes at Strixhaven dynamic and interesting with four events for each class offered at Strixhaven.

  • Expanded Class Mechanics: Make the classes chosen by players provide meaningful, mechanical value through an expanded class system.

  • Group Points System: Provide a reason for players to work together as a group, plus make successes and failures more meaningful throughout the adventures found in Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos.

  • Rival System: Create a rival party for your group that competes with them at every turn and encourages them to become exemplary students.

144 Class Events

This companion book contains four class ideas for each of the 36 courses included in Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos. Each event is designed to take less than 5 minutes. This allows you to run these events for specific players enrolled in a class while not diverting from your session's storyline for too long.

Expanded Class Mechanics

Classes in Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos have no real influence on the story. In Strixhaven: A Syllabus of Sorcery, the Expanded Class Mechanics ensure that each class can have a real mechanical impact on your campaign. This section outlines ways to improve your campaign's pacing with Class Performance Checks, as well as how to tie these checks into the 144 class events provided with this companion book.

Group Points System

Reward your players for their successes and punish them for their failures! The Group Points System allows combat, social, and exploration encounters to have meaningful impacts on each school year at Strixhaven. This system will encourage players to be exemplary students by tempting them with honor, bragging rights, and of course, treasure.

Rival System

Encourage your party to outperform their peers. The Rival System provides rules for creating and running a group of students who compete with the party at every turn.

Useful resource that helps fill the world of Strixhaven with interesting events. Well worth the price!

One nitpick - the roll to determine whether or not a special event occurs in each class seems overly complicated. After a brief trial I built table to determine which courses each week would have events while all other courses have a skill challenge 'pop quiz'.

Absolutely love this! Very helpful and adds an extra dimension to Strixhaven. Have you considered adding a printer-friendly version?

Thanks for the material! If I might ask, page 13 describes checking for an event... based on the die roll for the skill check for class performance? I guess that the idea is that the player rolls so poorly that something odd happens? I think I understand the reasoning, though it is a bit odd in the typical style of 5e. I also don't quite seem to see anything that takes into the account of them rolling an event but still managing to pass the DC for the class; I think the idea is that the even supplants the actual skill check, but that does feel off to have a player roll a skill check and then if they roll a certain number then their skill actually doesn't matter at all.

Still, I quite like this and plan on using the Class Performance rules for sure! Also put me down for 'interested' in a similar supplement regarding extracurriculars/jobs!

So glad! I've been a huge HP fan since I was a kid and it was super fun to write these class ideas.

Wonderful supplement. I would love to have more class events for the mandatory classes to give each of my players an event.

A season schedule with various holidays would also be nice

Glad you like it! You could also run most of these events with multiple players if they're all in the same class. It might take a bit of adjusting, but most events should work :)

I really like the idea of a seasonal schedule, I'll take a look into this!

Fantastic product! I'm getting a lot of use out of it. One thing however... For the event rolls for classes I noticed there's only event rolls for classes that have one of the colleges teaching it but none for general studies or the required classes like Magical Physiologies. Am I missing something or do we just assume an event happens each time they roll one of those classes?

Hi Eric, thanks for pointing this out. We've updated the table on page 14 to cover event rolls for general studies and required courses. Yes, the idea is that an event would come up each time one of these is rolled because there is likely more than one PC in the class, so it makes it more fun!

I am in love with this book! Any chance you'd be willing to make one for extracurriculars and jobs?

Would there be an ETA for Extracurriculars and jobs, if you are making one? I could desperately use something like this for what I'm running :D

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
