EB-EP-04 The Last War

ADD TO WISHLIST >

In this Epic event, the Lamannian Triune hurls the adventurers back in time on a mission to unlock the hidden secrets of the Oracle of War. In the blasted mud of the Cyran front line, the adventurers confront old enemies and new foes in a desperate mission to acquire the Oracle’s arcane codex before the rift pulls them back to the future! This four-hour Epic event is optimized for APL 20. Notes in the adventure allow for it to be used as a single-table event as well.

Welcome to the Oracle of War campaign, a new 20-part standalone story for the D&D Adventurers League! You can play this adventure as part of your own Eberron: Rising from the Last War campaign, or as part of the Oracle of War organized play campaign. While this campaign runs under the umbrella of the Adventurers League, it utilizes different rules. You can familiarize yourself with these unique campaign rules by checking out the Oracle of War Player's Guide and Oracle of War DM's Guide, found in the D&D Adventurers League Players Pack.

At what point should this be run? Typically the epics come after the end of a storyline trilogy (or quad). However, with the fact that this 4-part storyline is the end of the campaign, should this be run between EB-19 and EB-20? That seems to be the only thing that makes sense APL wise (I have not read the adventures yet, so can't comment based on story). The only other option would be to run it after EB-20, but what point would there be to doing so after the storyline ends?

Read the preview text for EB-20. It refers to the previous events of EB-EP-04. Therefore, EB-20 is meant to be run as the last portion of the adventure path.

I haven't played or read these, but perhaps it functions as a denouement and wraps up a bunch of dangling plot threads to give the PCs closure.

I'm in the middle of running this for my group-- a player dug up the original letter which was found in the Oracle of War's drawer when it was found. A letter addressed to Rumeo, written by Gorth, referencing 'something going wrong' during the 2nd test. This seems to be referring to the bit of prophesy that was spouted when the party appeared in the past. My players are now obsessed with finding Gorth to figure out what happened.

1. Is this a mistake? Gorth doesn't seem to be here.
2. If 'Gorth' is supposed to be one of the operatives, but someone goofed on the name continuity-- why would he write a letter about an event that Rumeo witnessed as well?
3. Did an operative seriously write a letter, immediately after the prophesy being spouted, in the middle of the battle? Then whisk the OoW off to Rumeo to take to safety?

Any help resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm confused too. It feels like they accidentally took the sendee's name from that letter instead of the sender's name. My solution would be to replace Rumeo with Gorth, meaning that it is Gorth d'Cannith who leads the test team and whom the party needs to chase down in Part 3. And in this case, Gorth wrote the letter when stashing the Oracle, expecting to send it off to Rumeo, who may have operated in another city and acted as an assistant or intermediary to Sulring.

Any ETA for EB-20? It was originally going to be November, then several dates in December....

I found the following update from Will's Twitter account (source: https://twitter.com/BeholderPie/status/1468689963277590535):

"It'll be out later this month. All is looking good now, but there have been some delays!"

First skim through, interesting has Edge of Tomorrow vibe to it .
Major piece of puzzle about oracle finally revealed, and important character knowledge about Sulring (no spoilers from me!). I would have played his interactions with the PCs a bit differently knowing this way back when they first met him. I’d imagine he’d feel pretty guilty about his involvement , or turn on the PCs and work against them to hide his involvement per original protocols.
Looking forward to 20!

What's the correct timeline of events between Naori's original death, Irullan joining the Emerald Claw, and the flashback adventure in EB-05? Irullan professed in EB-11 that every crime and act she's done for the Emerald Claw was to find and resurrect Naori. But Irullan's acquisition of the crystal skull (as an Emerald Claw necromancer accompanied by 10 undead soldiers) is dated "Twelve years previous", which would predate the Day of Mourning (during which Naori is apparently still much alive) by about 8 years. Is this a continuity error, was Irullan simply lying in her EB-11 confession, or is there some other explanation?

This is unfortunately a continuity error. All references to "12 years previous" in EB-05 should be adjusted to "2 years previous". Well spotted, and apologies - we'll try to fix this in a future update.

Will, if I'm not mistaken, I believe you will also need to rewrite EB-03's journal page (Handout 3). The 16 Olarune entry was written 3 days prior to another written entry, presumably before Curla Hurwinch also died on the Day of Mourning.

Could you elaborate on the EB-03 Journal problem? I'm not sure I follow.

Peregrinati F April 19, 2022 10:01 pm UTC
Oh, I see. The timeline suggested by the handout is:

- 986-??-?? (twelve years previous): Graystrife raids Xen'drik for the skull, but it's stolen by Irullan first.
- 998-02-16 (EB-03, Handout #3): Irullan (bearing the skull) visits Curla Hurwinch and her necromantic beacon prototype, near Kalazart.
- 998-02-20 (The day of Mourning): Irullan's sister Naori dies near Kalazart.
- 998-??-?? (EB-11): Irullan says everything she did was for the noble reason of bringing her sister back

Which means Irullan would have to be lying in EB-11, and she actually got the Skull for other (less sympathetic) reasons. Nothing wrong with that, I guess, except that she's much less sympathetic and there's less reason to risk a paradox her save Naori in EB-EP-04.

I think I'm going to use this timeline instead, and make the cabin an entirely random/unrelated thing where Curla was just hoping to use the beacon in the battle against Kalazart in a few days.

- 998-02-20...See more

This is great! A recurring time-loop adventure was always my second-biggest aspiration to run in a custom campaign! (And you covered my first-biggest aspiration in EB-18.) I can't wait to see what happens in EB-20!

One major open question I have, which I'm not sure can be answered here: How did some select characters appear to survive the Mourning, when everyone else within appears to have died during the event? Currently, there are at least two major NPCs who had disappeared, presumed dead, on the Day of Mourning, and yet were later found alive within the Mournland. As a DM, it's unclear to me whether all were really killed and these two survivors were actually just outside the boundaries when it happened and later brought into the Mournland, whether these two survived by some other magical means, or whether the Mourning has a more intermittent, <100% mortality rate that allowed for a small handful of survivors. The group I'm running includes a wizard who studied Chronurgy as a hope of rescuing...See more

Thanks, Jeremy! I hope you enjoy playing it and I can't wait for you to read the conclusion of the campaign in EB-20.

Regarding Mournland survivors, very few people are canonically supposed to have survived unless they escaped the cataclysm using magic, or managed to outrun the spreading mists. The Eberron: Rising from the Last War book has a few background flavour options that suggest characters did survive but were twisted somehow by the magic. For Oracle of War, most major NPCs who went missing on the day but are later found in the Mournland are presumed to have escaped Cyre, become lost in the chaos that immediately followed, and then been captured by renegade warforged (this applies specifically to Sulring Mroranon and Jara Blue). Aaren d'Cannith is presumed to have been shielded by the magic of the Lifespark Foundry. Hope that helps!

That helps a ton. Thanks! I had reasonably presumed both Sulring and Jara were definitively in Cyre during the Mourning. If Sulring was actually elsewhere, then captured shortly after the Mourning, that's fine. But Jara's survival is still the most difficult for me to reconcile, given his punitive assignment to the vanguard on a battlefield in Cyre, where he was presumable killed (or captured). Is there more to his survival story to be revealed in EB-20, or am I just missing some simple context clues that make his escape from Cyre (and the Mourning) more believable?

And for the record, I just remembered my third and fourth-biggest ambitions for a custom Eberron campaign: finally take my players all the way through levels 1-20, and run an escort mission to rescue Jaela Daran from imminent danger and return her to safety back in Flamekeep (I had imagined a kidnapping scheme masterminded by one of the cardinals, leaving Jaela more vulnerable absent most of her power outside Flamekeep, but close enough!)....See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
