Witchlight for the Combat-Starved (Hither)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to Witchlight for the Combat-Starved! This is the first of three supplements to help you add combat to this admittedly low-combat campaign. This supplement adds random encounters and three side-quests to Chapter 2: Hither. These sidequests include:

  • Hunting Warwyck the Dire Dodo Bird. There's a huge dodo bird with a horrendous temper stomping about in the swamps of Hither.
  • Hunting Ampersand the Newspaper Yeti. He has a magic printing press and has to meet the print deadline. Will your party free his pixie slaves? Will this be the end of the Prismeer Post?
  • Tracking down Archibald the Flail Snail in Fungalroot Cavern. Finally, a terrifying Flail Snail encounter. (You know you've been wanting one.) Now you get a chance to venture into Fungalroot Cavern, past the sentient mold and its zombie-like servitors, and come face to face with the Feywild version of a Flail Snail.

As well as random encounters such as settling a dispute between Disrespectful Beavers, an encounter with Skunk Punks, and the Ogre Chef and the Salt and Pepper Kobolds. This supplement is designed to give your players every opportunity to hit something with weapons, cast some spells at targets, and feel really good about their combat-focused character builds.

Every group has at least one of those players. You know the one I'm talking about. They took a very specific feat because it's critical to their build. They get an extra attack. Sure, they tell you, a Paladin/Warlock makes sense, you can be the servant of two masters.

This supplement was written for that player. This is for everyone who needs to see some bodies hit the floor to know they're having a great time. The goal was to keep all of the Feywild themes and ideas and balance that with the player's need to make something die and know they are responsible.

This supplement also incluldes the following, in addition to things your party can punch in the face:

  • The Woodpecker and the Porcupine! A rhyming riddle inspired by Lewis Carol's Through the Looking Glass
  • The Kobold Victory Table! If someone in your party manages to drop at the hands of a kobold, roll on this table to see what the victorious kobold does next to add some fun to the encounter.
  • The Sword of Tenors! A slightly disappointing sentient sword that sings to its wielder. (Come on, the party will be level 3 at best, you don't want to give them Mjolnir.)
  • The Gambler's Tools, including the Deck of Self-Shuffling, Dice of Revealing, and Coin of Luck.
  • The Driftwood Brothers, a pair of self-styled adventurer dwarfs who help point the party at their new targets from the Inn at the End of the Road
  • A full-color map of Fungalroot Cavern
  • Stat blocks for all new creatures including Warwyck the Dire Dodo, Ampersand the Newspaper Yeti, the Clockwork Basilisk, Soldier Rats, and more.

And for the combat-starved among us, we salute you.

Update December 6, 2021: Added full-color and full-sized player map of Fungalroot Cavern as a seperate file. Also corrected error where Potion of Disrespect was accidentally missing from Disrespectful Beaverfolk.

Update May 16, 2022: Added printer-friendly version as a seperate .pdf.

Hi, I really like the module! In section 5 of the cavern, it says there's a hooked horror spore servitor and that the stat block is below. I don't see the stat block in the module though. Could you assist? Thanks!

The stat block for the Hooked Horror Spore Servitor is on the same page. My mistake that it says "see below," since the formatting put it at the top right corner of the page.

Great module! I'm curious to know, what story is each of the titles in the Prismeer Press Article Table from?

Excellent idea. I just uploaded one for you. Now any time someone purchases the book they will get a printer friendly .pdf as well.

My party really enjoyed the quests in this module. But I have one question. What is the Prismeer Press Headline #5 a reference to? I figured out the rest of them.

Excuse me, but... where is the PDF? Or am I misunderstanding something? I just purchased this expansion and found only one map in two versions. Is it all what I get for 8$?

The .pdf has been reuploaded. Apparently when I revised the maps this week I accidentally removed the .pdf from the package. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, and please let me know when you have successfully downloaded the .pdf. I am so, so sorry for the inconvenience!

My players are FAR from people who only care about combat, but we enjoy it in our games when it does come up. The description of the player who only wants to roll damage doesn't suit us at all, but the party was combat-starved and ready to charge into battle by the time they got halfway through Hither. They avoided the mud mephit encounter by answering the riddle correctly, and were actually disappointed!! When we reached Brigand's Tollway, they charged in without thinking and got way in over their heads, and the newer players didn't have the combat experience that would have helped them put up a good fight. I've only given this supplement a quick skim, but I wish I had this when we first entered the feywild! These still have the same flavor the book provides, but will give everyone a chance to flex those combat features. Looking forward to future installments, this is going to add some much-needed damage rolls to our campaign. Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
