Prevailing wisdom often states that a Dungeon Master should never split the party. However, going against prevailing wisdom is often a way to create new and memorable experiences for players. It’s possible to create a unique cinematic experience where the tension rises as each half of the party watches what the other is going through.

Split The Party provides advice, encounters, and an original adventure that guides Dungeon Masters through dividing the party in ways that enhance the suspense and create a cohesive experience from multiple angles. Whether it’s one half of the party trying to survive on their own while the other half desperately tries to locate and save them, or the characters taking on different tasks while preparing an extraordinary feast, there are many ways for the heroes to work together separately towards a common goal.

This product includes:

  • Advice on how to make splitting the party a fun and engaging experience for players, along with guidance on the pitfalls to avoid.

  • Mechanics for scaling the included adventure and encounters so they can be used for characters of all levels, from level 1 to 20.

  • Lost In The Woods - An original adventure that splits the party in half for a cinematic experience cutting back and forth between scenes and presenting several difficult moral dilemmas, each decision impacting the experience of the other half of the group.

  • Four modular encounters that can be plugged into any adventure or campaign:

    • A Rising Tide - When half the party is stuck in a rapidly flooding room, it’s up to the other half to figure out how to save them.

    • Polar Opposites - A strange machine places electrical charges on party members, encouraging them to spread out or face shocking results.

    • At The Obelisk’s Base - A mysterious obelisk is guarded by several creatures, and the party must come up with cooperative tactics when those guards are more than they seem.

    • Festival of Autumn’s Eve - The group must work simultaneously on several aspects of the feast in order to ensure its success.

  • Seven brand new magic items that are built around the idea of the party members being separated from each other.

  • Five full color maps (with and without grids) that support the adventure and encounters, or can be used for your own creations.

  • Forty-four NPC and creatures - eleven originals with a separate stat blocks for each of the four adventure tiers.

Split the Party is so good! Terrific stuff! I'm literally working on a plan for exactly how to get a group split for the next series from tfttpresents.com and it's already giving me so many ideas on how to make it both fun, but also keep it [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
