EB-17 The Final Tribute

ADD TO WISHLIST >

SOMETHING IS ROTTEN IN THE STATE OF NEW CYRE

Prince Oargev of New Cyre knows the location of the secret Cyran creation forge, but a grim litany of recent disasters has shaken his throne: plague, treachery, recession, and insurgency. This intelligence could buy him a chance to rebuild anew, but who’ll be his highest bidder? Optimized for APL 17, this is the first in a quartet of adventures, the Flames of War storyline.

Welcome to the Oracle of War campaign, a new 20-part standalone story for the D&D Adventurers League! You can play this adventure as part of your own Eberron: Rising from the Last War campaign, or as part of the Oracle of War organized play campaign. While this campaign runs under the umbrella of the Adventurers League, it utilizes different rules. You can familiarize yourself with these unique campaign rules by checking out the Oracle of War Player's Guide and Oracle of War DM's Guide, found in the D&D Adventurers League Players Pack.

One more example of "can't cover everything": my party has a warlock with Witch Sight, looking forward to seeing how this breaks the adventure when I run it tomorrow...

I enjoy this adventure and so did my players. It is Tier 4 and it is hard to cover everything a player can do. A few false clues would have added to the story but also to the length which is an issue with a convention adventure. My players almost broke the adventure by accident with a heros feast spell in part 2. Also a commune with nature is not covered in the what to do if the players cast this spell part but should be. It can be cast multiple times and unlike commune has no downside after the first casting. Its ability to detect creatures from other planes will break this mod if used correctly. Lastly the nondetection spell should be used by the bad guys.

Hi Malcolm, really glad you all enjoyed the adventure and thanks very much for your comments!

It’s tricky to cover every eventuality for a Tier 4 party, even if you’re running for the same group! I’d suggest treating any party that casts heroes feast as Very Strong for the purposes of the final encounter.

I should probably have included Commune with Nature in the sidebar on divinations, but it doesn’t work in towns so won’t help the characters much in New Cyre. The villain’s sidekick has cast Mind Blank to help them stay undetected and the main villain has a useful magic item to maintain their cover as long as possible. Clever use of divination spells and other magic is part of the fun of Tier 4 characters, though, so I tried to strike a balance between letting the players make use of their cool abilities and not making it too easy for them.

Cheers!

Just a question - since we are entering the final arc, are there any effects from the Supporting Leerut legacy event in DDAL-00-13, Cold Spell in the Frost Fell?

Hey Lou, yes, we return to Salvation properly in EB20. As Cold Spell isn't part of the core campaign, Leerut's influence on the adventure is fairly minimal, but the legacy event does create some fun consequences. Cheers!

If the King in Green was misidentified by Flamewind, then was all of that rigmarole with Kor ir'Wynarn completely pointless?

I am a little worried that this adventure's overall scenario is rather small-scale for a tier 4 adventure. Is this not the sort of adventure that could feasibly happen at tier 2? This reads more like a tier 2 adventure loosely upscaled to tier 4, simply by having the antagonist be a powerful entity.

At the end of the day, it is still just a murder mystery in a small town, helping out the poor folk and their beleaguered lord.

I have read through the adventure in full. Even taking into account the twists at the end, this really, really does not seem like a tier 4 adventure. This is more akin to a tier 2 adventure hastily scaled up to tier 4, mostly by having the bad guys be powerful monsters.

D&D 4e had low-level adventures like Mark of Prophecy, Dead for a Spell, and Dark Lantern that felt more like high-stakes, high-impact storylines than this particular adventure.

For now just looking into the preview - and big thanks to Will and the whole OoW crew for including a story arc spoilers sidebar in this one. It's going to help with setting up the story immensely!

You're welcome! It wasn't much, but I'm glad it helped (for what it's worth, I can add that Goryphael is the true form of Narcy of Xandrar). I hope you and your group enjoy the rest of the campaign.

You may benefit from reading the blurbs for the remaining episodes:

EB-18: Scales of War
The united forces of the Five Nations march into the Mournland to wage war on the Lord of Blades. West of the Glass Plateau, they are met by an army the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the heights of the Last War. Let battle commence!

EB-19: Back to the Mud
In the ruins of Making, the Lord of Blades hammers out an army of steel to conquer the Five Nations of Khorvaire. With the Oracle of Bones at his side, he knows all plots against him before they can be enacted. He cannot be defeated—unless, of course, his enemies have their own Oracle!

EBEP-4: The Last War
The Lamannian Triune hurl the adventurers back in time on a mission to unlock the hidden secrets...See more

My opinion of Oracle of War, as someone who has been running it for months, is currently very low. We are all the way in adventure #17, and Oracle of War is still blue-balling both the GM and the players alike with teases of plot developments and revelations, only to withhold them with one flimsy excuse after another.

To wit: by adventure #17, the GM and the players still do not know the actual background of the Oracle of War, or its original patrons. The problem is that they are writing this plotline as they go along, and they cannot actually commit to any significant plot developments until the very end. (Indeed, it was revealed that the Sky Blue subplot would be resolved only by the final adventure!)

I am 100% certain that adventure #20 is going to be a major letdown. The authors have been delaying revelation after revelation with teases of "All will be revealed in time~", and there is no possible way that they are going to live up to the hype by adventure #20.

I am 100% certain you will not enjoy the end of the series, as you're clearly committed to sabotaging any good will around it! I kindly recommend that you stop playing the campaign here, to avoid further disappointment, and let others enjoy it without your ongoing negative commentary. Take it to your own, homebrew destination, and make your own fun.

I am inclined to say that the last adventure is so vague in its description precisely because its express purpose is to cram in every unresolved plot thread ("old scores remain to be settled") and hastily explain everything.

My main issue with Oracle of War, as a narrative, is that it does not follow the storytelling loop of "investigate mysterious events -> receive satisfying answer -> more questions are raised -> investigate more mysterious events." Instead, rather than hand out satisfying answers, it withholds all but the smallest motes of information, while only raising more questions on what is actually going on. The Adventurers League format and the multiple authors have made this a necessity, and the adventure series has committed to handing out significant answers only by the very end.

Considering some of the hijinks my group has gotten up to and what I have planned in tandem with the main story... This final arc is going to be something.

I mean yeah, but even more so in my party's case. I had been making my own plans with the Lord of Blades, but now to have Argonnessen finally throw their lot in... Who knows what shape Khorvaire will be in at the end of all of this...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
