Night Below: An Underdark Campaign

In 1995, TSR published the campaign adventure named “Night Below” for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd edition. It was written by Carl Sargent and illustrated by Jeff Easley, Arnie Swekel, and Glen Michael Angus. It was a box set consisting of three 64-page books, player handouts on 16 sheets, an 8-page Monstrous Compendium supplement, 8 referee reference cards, and 3 double-sided full-color maps with tactical maps. This conversion guide allows you to run the original campaign adventure with 5th Edition rules, taking player characters from 1st level to 14th level.

This conversion includes extensive notes on how to run this 3 part campaign adventure.

All notes are divided up by book to make reference easier. Information is given on NPC structure, motivation, tactics, and response to player character actions.

Lists show you what creatures are referenced and which books you can find them in.

A list of magic items and page references in the original books, as well as conversion notes, are included for each book.

A total of 96 custom monster and NPC stat blocks were created for this conversion, as well as 36 new magic items, and 2 new spells.

In total, this conversion is 96 pages packed with everything you need to run this epic underdark campaign for D&D 5th edition.

The ring of water elemental command ring obtained from goblins in book1. I do not see the reference in the magic items on your PDF page 11/Magic Items for the first book.
In my game, we started at 2E, nearing to the end of the book1, my party voted to 5E version. Right after killing the trolls in book2, I have encountered this guide, and I will adjust accordingly. So, applying some updates to my game, performing some backtracking to check I have given the items or converted the items in a suitable way. Currently they have the 5E version of the ring with killing the water elemental on the Eelhold. While reading the guide, I am confused a little bit. I see the magic item list, even simple magic items are mentioned, this water elemental ring (a major legendary item) is not mentioned. So, in 5E version of this game, this ring not to have any water elemental command capability at all - like a non-magical fancy ring?
If this was missing to mention, could you please make an update on the file?

Thanks for spotting that errata. Yes, it is a ring of water elemental command as mentioned in the original text. I simply missed referencing it on the chart.

As for updates, I recently changed computers and am still looking for all my 2021 updates, including these files. As soon as I locate them I will update the document here.

Hi Mark o/
Do I need an original 2e campaign to use your conversion?
You mentioned that the original had 3x 64 pages plus lots of smaller stuff that will make it over 200 pages.
But your PDF has just 96 pages.

Can those 100 missing pages be found in Players handbook and others 5e books?
What about those maps? Are they in your conversion?

Apologies for any confusion. The conversion requires the original 2e pdf or hardcopy to use. My conversion can't reprint that material without violating community standards. Fortunately the original is available here:

Hi Mark! Great product. I was actually homebrewing this myself and seen yours and will be adding this to what I have done. What do you think about putting Haranshire between The Greypeak Mountains and Evereska?

I think it would work fine there. An out of the way place where help isn't easily available fits the tone of the adventure.

This conversion is really bad.

First, the conversion guide is awkwardly acting like adventure storyline and conversion guide. Some parts, it even just wants you to look it up in the MM, but doesn't state that. I can look past a part where the original adventure had 11 orcs, but the 5e conversion is listed as 10. I'm a little annoyed, but I can get past it.

In what world does a 4th level human ranger have 6d8 hit point, and a 7th level human wizard has 10d8 hit points? I was also frustrated that he swapped one of Tauster's spells from Detect Scrying to Private Sanctum, when the adventure explicitly states why he has that spell prepared. On that note, the spell is listed as "Private Sanctum" rather than "Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum". There's even incorrect damage listed for weapons.

The whole guide is riddled with these kinds of errors and the author clearly has not played through the adventure. It was the first thing I bought from this site and I...See more

Hi Jason. I'd like to address your points.

The guide is designed to be a conversion, which means rebalancing the encounters for the D&D 5e system. While I have done direct conversions without such tweaking, I felt it did justice to this grand adventure to fully invest in said balancing. So monster numbers from the original to conversion will not always match up.

To save on page bloat, I don't reprint standard monster stat blocks from published books unless the monsters are noteworthy or special. I note in the text about changes with weapons and armor.

Nonplayer character hit points are derived usually a different metric than player characters. They generally have 2 to 4 more dice for hit points over their class level. This makes them more of a challenge when they are foes and helpful when they are allies. This is something I learned early in running games for 5e.

Regarding the Detect Scrying spell, it doesn't exist in core 5e. Since rulings have noted that...See more

Hi Mark,

I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to write back, and I especially appreciate how quick you responded!

Incorrect weapon damage is on page 85 under "Broken One". PHB states a Club does 1d4, but you list it as 1d6. MM made the same mistake with Thugs and bandits though. Considering the early use of Thugs and Bandits, 1d4 seems more appropriate. If there's an errata I missed, then I apologize for that.

I get the rebalancing point. I've gone from AD&D to 3.5 to Pathfinder to 5e and everything in-between, so I understand how much has changed from each systems. As I mentioned, I was a little annoyed at the number of monsters being changed, but I was willing to accept that as part of the science behind the conversion, especially since it impacted so little.

I get the idea of saving on bloat, but then why repeat information...See more

Hi Jason.

So mea culpa on the club damage. That got lost in the flurry of stats.

So about Ranchefus and company. I did take liberties on reinterpreting him and his cronies during the conversion. Since he had the chain mail in the original, I left it there, assuming Cyric was cool with it. The extra spells are the domain spells Ranch gets from the Trickery domain. Small item changes - I honestly can't remember what I was thinking. Maybe going with the trickery aspect of Cyric. I like your suggestion of converting them to another god. It would work well.

So NPC hit dice. When I started conversions, I did one hit die per class level. I noticed though that this didn't match up with NPCs in published scenarios. So after hemming and hawing over it for awhile, I took a cue from the Monster Manual. If you look up the standard races as monster stats, they have 2 HD. So I start every NPC at 2 HD, like the MM, and then add class levels. It worked a lot better in play even if it doesn't...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
