The Sentient Weapon - a new combination of race and class

BECOME A WEAPON OF LEGEND!

“I have seen people rise to the hero’s call, and others succumb to the way of villainy. Each person has a story to tell. What few people realize is that there are other stories out there that have yet to be told. I’m sure you’ve heard of Blackrazor. Have you heard the sword tell its version of the tale? Listen and learn, for these weapons are people too.”

Hi Scott! We absolutely love hearing about when people use our supplements! I think I listened to a couple episodes of The Die As Cast sometime last year. I'm definitely going to get back into it!

For your question, the Aid Attack action is meant only to be used when you have a PC bearer, as otherwise if you don't want to cast a spell there's sometimes not much else you can do on your turn.

Since you're capable of attacking "by yourself" with an NPC bearer, you don't need the Aid Attack action. It would be sort of like taking the Help action to give yourself advantage as a regular PC, it's just not meant for that and so the rules don't support it.

I hope that answers your question! Feel free to ask any follow-up questions here, or on Twitter (@unraveledarch), or by email (shem@unraveledarchives.com). Whatever's easiest for you!

This answers my question perfectly, as, yes using the Aid Attack with an NPC bearer would be double-dipping.

If I can make a suggestion, I would see about updating the description of "Aid Attack" to say that this only works with PC-bearers. (unless it's there and I missed it).

Maybe just update the one sentence:

"You can use your action to aid a creature using you to attack, such as by giving it advice or encouragement, magically directing its strikes, or distracting the target."

to

"You can use your action to aid a "PC bearer and only a PC bearer" using you to attack, such as by giving it advice or encouragement, magically directing its strikes, or distracting the target."

Or maybe in special cases with NPC bearers completely controlled by the DM. Example: a DM was running an NPC character as an extra party member and they were temporarily your bearer but you had no control over it's actions....See more

You are absolutely right about that not being clear in the text. We're currently working on an update to clarify and tweak a couple of minor things in the document, and now I've got the Aid Attack action noted down to fix. Thank you for pointing this out!

I've listened to that first episode with Templar and I'm really impressed with the overall quality of the podcast. And it's so awesome to hear people running with this kind of random idea I had!

Your gnome bearer idea sounds like a ton of fun! I'd love to hear how your players interact with such an interesting pair!

I'm playing a ruinbound dwarf artificer who is trying to remove his symbiote. I wonder if I can subclass into this and make it so that I succeed in removing the symbiote and harnessed it as a weapon? The possibilities!

That sounds like an awesome character concept! The Sentient Weapon class currently doesn't function with multiclassing, but I can see a couple of different ways you could go about working your idea.

1. There are simplified rules in this product for how to create and play with sentient weapon sidekicks - so depending on how your DM feels about the sidekick rules (such as in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything or the D&D Essentials Set) you could go that route.

2. Use these rules to create a full 'character' for your symbiote/weapon, though that would be a bit like running two player characters.

3. If it sounds interesting, you could instead use a different supplement of ours, the Slaad Symbiote subclass for Sorcerer. Basically you have a slaad egg stuck in you, and you can hatch it out of you as your familiar. Pretty gross, but also tons of fun, and sounds like it might be up your ally? Obviously, you could reflavor it from a slaad to whatever aberration you wanted.

Hi there! My friend and I were looking to start a D&D podcast and would love to make a character using this supplement, would you be ok with us using this class for one of our characters?! We will disclose where it had come from and direct every listener to this page if they are interested in using this class themselves. We love this document and we have great story elements that could link into this class. Hope to hear back from you soon! Cheers :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
