Chadwick and the Southern Scourge

a light-hearted gothic horror adventure for fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons™

Chadwick running gif

Greetings Adventurers!

Chadwick and the Southern Scourge is a tale of heartache and stolen vampire fangs under a pale moon cast over the Village of Storaad.

Lightning cracks behind the silhouette of a castle high up on the Cloud Peaks. An ancient vampire, Lord Orion, has summoned you to retrieve a most precious item—his fangs! In exchange, he will reward you with something from your wildest dreams.

Are you brave enough to rub shoulders with the monster-hunting clans of Storaad? Are you strong enough to pass through the Cove of the Damned and survive the mind-bending pink miasma of the Southern Scourge? Is your heart stalwart enough to endure the moral dilemma placed upon you by Chadwick, the greatest monster hunter in all of Storaad? Do you want a light-hearted romp or a tale of horror?! Let’s find out!

Written for Dungeon Masters, as you run this module you will find unique tables, wondrous items, and a mix of horror and humor depending on your mood. This tale can easily be dropped into your homebrew world or another published adventure. Improvising at-will is encouraged, so change whatever you’d like to fit your table and style.

Reviews of the Adventure

"I know an adventure is all about the friendship you find along the way and stuff but, truthfully, I was mainly in it for the Vampire Raves."
— Addi Vega, Bard

"Pssst ... pro-tip: Conjure Minor Elementals is just code for Conjure Drinking Buddies *hiccup* that Gargoyle was a stone cold killer baaahahahaha *hiccup* ... what was the question? Oh, I had fun!”
— Ferguson Casselanter, Bar Stool Wizard

"I usually relegate books to more practical uses like hearth kindling or wrapping the entrails of a freshly caught Knucklehead Trout. But Addi told me not to do that with this book, so I use it to prop my window open. This book is a very good window prop and many should purchase it. Addi, did you get all that down?"
— Bronky Thunderstump, Professional Hero

Happy Hunting!

Hey Colby, just a few questions.

What is the suggested party level for 5 PC's?

And how long (ish) would you say this adventure is? I'd love to run it for halloween but it seems like a lot for even an extended session

Hey Daniel!

The suggested party level for 5 PC's would be between levels 3 and 5. If your PC's are lvl 3 or 4, I'd suggest reducing the HP of some of the monsters and/or reducing some of the damage the monsters could deal. However, at that level there are no challenges they can't overcome. If your PC's are lvl 5, this adventure should be a challenge, but nothing impossible will stand in their way.

This adventure is a lot for a single session! It's possible for your crew to finish it in as little as two sessions, but they would need to be fast-tracked and head immediately to finding Chadwick, getting the fangs, and bringing them back to Lord Orion.

My suggestion for running it as a one-shot on Halloween would look something like this—
- Read and understand the adventure yourself so that you can easily hit the bullets below as I point to the sections that can be cut out for a faster session.
- Begin the adventure in the tavern, the Rotten Rudder in the Village...See more

I love the tone and style of this adventure, and I'm looking forward to running it! A few questions:
- I want to run it for my level 9 party. Any advice for adjusting the adventure, beyond increasing monster stats?
- I don't see any other titles by you on DMs Guild. Have you published anything else?
Thanks!

Hey Victor!

Thanks so much for checking out Chadwick! Here are my suggestions for running this adventure for higher-level PCs.

- Overall: ratchet up the danger!
This adventure was written to be light-hearted and an easy go for lower-level characters. Increasing the overall danger across the adventure will help even the playing field with lvl 9+ abilities from your PCs. I’ll try to suggest some specific places to do that through the adventure below.

- Rework the Teen Mind Flayers into actual Mind Flayers.
I scaled them down to fit a lower-level party, but making each of them a Mind Flayer with their full psionic ability makes them a much more challenging trio. Also, to spice things up, they could have a handful of pets from the Underdark that they bring with them to confront Chadwick.

- Another overall note would be to increase monster stats (which it seems you’re already anticipating)!

- Chapter 3: Castle White.
I would suggest...See more

Will do. One more thing: is there a printer-friendly version available?

This is my first request for a printable version! I'll create one and you should get a notification when it's added to the files in the coming weeks.

Thanks for the printer version! We're about halfway through the adventure (the party has learned about Chadwick and are ready to go after him and the Southern Scourge in the sewers) and we're having a great time! I do have a question:

SPOILER ALERT

If the Teen Mindflayers are forcing Chadwick to steal the teeth, then why is he bragging about killing a vampire and showing the teeth around town? Wouldn't he be more discreet so as not to draw attention to himself? Is he just really dumb?
I made sure to give Chadwick a magical container for the teeth, otherwise Lord Orion could locate them pretty easily with some divination magic.

SPOILER ANSWER ALERT:

Great question! Simply put, Chadwick is inherently flawed and cannot resist bragging about obtaining a trophy. Since he hasn't had real monster-hunting work in a long time, he's had to create many of the fake trophies you find in his home! The fangs happen to be an actual trophy and he just can't help but brag! Yes, it makes him an immediate target and blows his cover, but that's what low self-esteem does to ya :)

Good call about the magical container for the teeth and Orion being able to locate them with divination magic. Another thing to consider: Lord Orion may already know where the teeth are, but he's really looking for an able and willing pack of adventurers to see what they can do. Lord Orion can offer many other jobs for the characters as hinted in one of the epilogues.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
