Curse on Beregost - A Candlekeep Mysteries Bookend

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Beregost is a large town just outside of the magical library of Candlekeep. A terrible curse has befallen the land, causing crops to wither and die just before the harvest. All hope seems lost until a group of aspiring heroes stumble into town. After a quest to find a sage at Candlekeep goes sideways, will the heroes be able to save the town?

A Candlekeep Bookend

This short adventure is meant to serve as a "bookend" (a support for the end of a row of books to keep them upright, often one of a pair) for the first adventure of Candlekeep Mysteries, "The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces"In this case, this bookend is meant to support the beginning and end of "The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces" so that it feels like a fully fleshed-out adventure. This adventure is intended for parties of 4 to 6 characters starting at average level 1 or 2 before "The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces". This adventure also includes:

  • Adventure Hooks, to get your party started with this adventure and eventually to Candlekeep.
  • A Starting Town, complete with NPCs and shops to get your adventure started off.
  • A Dungeon and VTT-Ready Color Map, where the party can overcome a riddle (with color handout), some monsters, and terrain challenges.

Adventure Summary

The party will approach the town of Beregost and learn that a curse has been levied upon the land. Crops and livestock appear to be dying and the people are suffering. The party meets up with the town leaders at a fancy new inn called the Opulent Owlbear. The town leaders send the party on a quest to learn how to lift the curse from a sage at Candlekeep. At this point, the party goes on the adventure laid out in "The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces" and recovers a book from the sage about regional curses. The book leads the party to the lair of a witch, with whom the party must fight or negotiate in order to end the curse.

Spoilers: I played this along with the Joy of Extradimensional Spaces in a 2-shot when a friend ran it. My 3 kobolds in a trenchcoat rogue wound up becoming deputy mayor of Beregost and the hag is tending the bar. 5/5. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
