Free entertainment during pandemic times.

In light of current events, I have decided to offer this adventure for free. It's a small gesture but I hope it can help a little bit.

Old School Guide to Dungeon of the Mad Mage

There’s a problem with Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage - there is no good reason to explore it. Narratively, characters want to return with riches and tales of adventure but mechanically, few players care about that stuff in Fifth Edition D&D. The narrative and the mechanical goals for Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage do not align.

This module contains optional rules to bring these two motivations back together, based on the teachings of sage DMs, previous editions of Dungeons & Dragons, and a little bit of this DM’s personal caprice.

What's in the Box?

This 94-page module contains a toolkit for the dungeon master, with new spells, player options, treasure hoards, and encounters to drop into Undermountain. With the help of this module, you can play the dungeon in an old school style, as a megadungeon where teams of adventurers descend hoping to make it back out alive with as much treasure as they can carry. Each session represents a single excursion into the dungeon, starting and ending at the Yawning Portal.

Old School Guide to Dungeon of the Mad Mage adds the following:

  • XP for gold - a staple of old-school gaming that has a massive impact on the way players interact with the dungeon.

  • Encumbrance - based on a slot system that simplifies the default encumbrance system.

  • Adjudicating time - the re-introduction of the dungeon turn from editions gone by.

  • New spells

  • Hirelings and followers

  • Treasure tables - loot for each level of the dungeon, enough to level up at the same speed as normal!

  • Random encounter tables - enough to keep each level fresh, and including new factions to repopulate the dungeon.

  • D&D lite - an entire optional subsystem for character classes that ditches the skill-heavy nature of D&D and replaces it with basic, but open-ended, abilities, including a player-driven replacement for spellcasting.

  • New monsters - some reprints and some new additions such as the greater medusa and swarm of kobolds.

Wildly creative, insightful, fun. I've been using this as a resource to run Dungeon of the Mad Mage as an open-table megadungeon, and frankly it as critical a resource as the original book. [...]

The D&D Lite rules are very clean and smart. Good design all around. [...]

There are so many good things to say about this title... First of all, I'll admit, I haven't run Dungeon of the Mad Mage. A megadungeon felt really out of place within the framework of 5e so I often passed it over in favor of more narr [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
