Oliver I think this is an awesome and creative book. I would love the opportunity to convert into a Fantasy Grounds Module. I have done a bit of work for some well known authors and can guarantee the quality of my conversions. If you'd like we can discuss it.

Honestly these have a lot of good ideas. However, I feel the Lord of Blades statblock was maybe a bit overtuned damage-wise. I mean he's powerful yes, but the extremely high flat damage + the save-or-die effect tacked on top of those is extreme overkill. Especially with the other tools at his disposal.

There's two versions of Vecna as far as intellectual property goes. One is from Ravenloft, which is an approved setting. I've spoken to the Guild team about this, and we think it falls within the bounds of the license agreement, though of course if WOTC step in and say otherwise, I'll have to adjust the book accordingly.

I suppose you could also argue that Vecna (at least his hand) appears in Descent into Avernus?

How is this at the top of the "hottest titles" list? There's only one rating and no comments/reviews, it surely can't have outsold everything else on the list in just one day.

Ratings can't be left during the first day after a purchase, trending is based entirely on recent sales.

So how does it have 1 rating already then? It was put up yesterday; also I can't imagine this has had enough sales since yesterday to unseat the other titles that have been there for months unchallenged.

The hottest titles list is arranged by an algorithm. We don't know the precise details, but it's something to do with the money made and the number of days something has been active. Products that sell a lot in their first day (and have a price sufficient to make enough money via those sales) shoot to the top, and then stick around (or not) depending on whether they continue to sell. Products that have been around a long time seem to count for less in the rankings, but if they're particularly successful, they can remain in the top 10 for a fair while, particularly if nothing comes along to challenge them. My titles frequently reach #1, and often stick around a while afterwards (such as the Infinite Staircase, which has been in the top 10 since mid January, but was at #1 for weeks) so nothing about this is unusual.

As to ratings, they're locked for the first 24 hours after a purchase, and the first rating was left about 24 hours after I put the book on sale, IIRC.

That one buyer must've been pretty johnny-on-the-spot to both buy almost immediately and then drop a rating almost immediately after the 24 hour wait.

Just had a thought actually, you'd be able to see the sales in your royalty report section and you could compare it to something like The Infinite Staircase that's at number 10; taking a look at how they both sold over the last day. Might provide some insight on what outwardly appears as a bit of an anomaly.

(Also that Tiamat stat block being able to reliably drop 24d10 1-2 times a round while outside the range of most player attacks/spells is probably a bit much even for a CR30 creature.)

It's fairly common from my own experience for playtesters, artists, or people who helped workshop a product to purchase it and leave positive reviews if it's a product they enjoy and want to see succeed.

This comment is for Michael W:

For the record, we do know the exact algorithm.

It's (Cumulative $ value of sales - POD costs per sale if applicable) / number of days on market or 60, whichever is lower.

So if an item sells 50 copies at $10 on day 1, it's weighting on the algorithm is 500. (10*50)/1 and drops to 250 once 24 hours elapses.

(This is just for the Hottest banner. The under $5 banner uses a slightly different algorithm)

While that is good to know it seems like with there being an algorithm like this, there is room for abuse in the system.

Why the concern? Why the disbelief that this title found an audience rather quickly, especially considering the known quality this author delivers? I was immediately drawn in by the cover art, and once I noticed the author, it was an immediate purchase for me.

A clarification here- it's actually against the rules for those involved with a book such as artists to rate those titles.

This title has been promoted regularly for the last month. It's something a lot of people are excited for. Turns out, queer people play D&D too! I guarantee that you, Michael, wouldn't question it whatsoever if it was a completely ordinary title.

I'd question any title that jumps right to the top of the hottest titles list within a day of it's posting that's also got an almost immediate 5 star review too; especially given similarly promoted and anticipated titles like Exploring Eberron still had to climb up the list when they were released.

Feel free to continue implying I'm a bigot though while condescendingly assuming I'm not queer myself.

You could just be happy that the book found its audience within the gueer community instead of debating and reasoning that it shouldn't be getting the attention it is getting because something you did like didn't get the same attention. The lgbtq+ community are always banding together to celebrate our inclusion in things we love; d&d included.

Did I ever say this shouldn't be getting attention? Or that I like Exploring Eberron? I used Exploring Eberron as an example because I remember both it being widely promoted/anticipated/discussed and seeing it climb the list after its release rather than jumping to the top.

My line of questioning had nothing to do with the LGBTQ+ community, just simply how this managed to jump to the top of the hottest titles list in less than 24 hours as well as how it managed to have a 5-star rating in that time despite the 24 hour rating/review time limit; some of this was answered by Steve F's explanation of how the algorithm works for the list.

My only remaining question really is why the Tiamat (Gay Icon) stat block has lower Intelligence & Wisdom than the regular Tiamat stat block (20 instead of 26); without even any boost to Charisma either.

Well then my mistake for drawing the wrong assumptions from your comments. As for the Tiamat stat block, I would say ask the author. Perhaps it was a personal preference or simply written incorrectly.

My guess is the designer could have been going for a "keep the vanity but lose a bit of smarts and sense" vibe with Tiamat.

Possibly, although a 6 point difference (in Intelligence at least) is the gap between an Ape and a slightly above average humanoid like the Druid stat block (or between a Baboon and a Commoner); which seems like quite the loss of smarts & sense. Granted the trade was getting to drop 24d10 damage 1 to 2 times a round from up to 500ft away which will wipe a lot of parties easily (that should probably be looked at), alongside other boosts so there's worse trades I guess.

Michael, the FAQ at the end of the book details how exactly one can contact the creator(s) with concerns about typos and other content. Of course you're free to modify these stat blocks for your own table, and I think the material and concepts presented here are much more than a few numbers on a page. Do you have any other concerns? I find "it's suspicious how well this product is doing" and "the stats aren't what I think they should be" pretty uncompelling, and they could certainly be addressed in a (probably ignored due to the weird suspicion) email to the creator(s).

You seem to be attributing malice to my questions that isn't there, you may also notice I've not purchased the book in question so I've no way of seeing the FAQ you mention. As I've said prior: I'd question any title that jumps right to the top of the hottest titles list within a day of it's posting that also had an almost immediate 5 star review too (due to the review time limit), given that every other title I've seen top the list no matter how popular (see Blood Hunter 2020 & Exploring Eberron) has climbed up there.

As for the stat block questions, they're based on what I can see in the quick preview. For the Int/Wis stats it's not "what I think they should be" but comparing the Tiamat stat block from RoT to the Tiamat (Gay Icon) one here since if it's meant to be essentially the same character but queer, why the lower Intelligence/Wisdom scores? With none of the other scores being changed it can have some unfortunate and presumably unintentional implications.

Michael, if you have any thoughts about the book contents, I'll be happy to consider any that are emailed to the address specified inside the book.

If you persist in making claims me of somehow circumventing the rankings system without evidence, however, I will be forced to contact the guild and ask them to remove your posts for harassment. It's very common for a product to appear at #1, it happens all the time. Queercoded initially appeared at #4, and then moved to #1 a few hours later. The first rating appeared over 24 hours after the book was published.

Unfortunately as previously mentioned I can't see that email address as it's beyond the available preview, which is where I noticed the two stat block related things I mentioned prior. Am I able to find the same address in any of your other work I may already own such as The Infinite Staircase or Killer Kobolds from Outer Space?

As for my initial question up at the top of this thread, I received a satisfactory explanation on how the algorithm for the list works from Steve F not too long after your first reply; any reiteration of my initial question, such as to Lore E, Roy M, and Daniel B, was for clarification to address their comments which assumed my initial question contained or was spurred by malice relating to the subject matter of the content which as I stated each time was not the case. I'd honestly delete my initial question myself to prevent further similar replies and to avoid cluttering your page, but I don't have an option to do so from my end.

Michael, I am the mystery person who left the initial 5-star rating (there are now 4 additional 5-star ratings). I have purchased nearly every DMsGuild product published by Oliver, and I am a huge fan of his work. I bought the supplement, read through it, and left a rating once the 24-hour waiting period had expired. That’s it. There is no ratings fix conspiracy, no juicy secret love story, I am not Oliver’s son that he was forced to give up for adoption as a teen-aged father, nor am I his mother pretending to be a disinterested purchaser. Oliver consistently puts out best-selling products on DMsGuild because of the high quality of his work and the fresh, quirky and humorous perspective infused in his writing.

Oliver's work often ranks high; it's good, enthusiastically-written content with good production values, colorful presentation and a sense of humor. He's one of the best creators on DMs Guild for offbeat, fun material. I don't know why he gets such a hard time (this many comments, really?!) for something that is obviously far outside of his control. I haven't picked this one up yet but I frequently leave reviews instantly after the cooling off period so I don't forget (time zones are convenient like that).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
