AllOlive's Monk (flexible revised class, with feat, spells, and items)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This is a rework of the standard Monk class to add variety and choices, both during regular play and when leveling up. Most class features are recast as "techniques", akin to Warlock invocations. Stunning strike is a bit weaker; that leaves room for adding a bit of power and flexibility in other regards.

This is compatible with existing Monk subclasses ("Ways"), both canon and homebrew.

Also included: a Ki Initiate feat that gives other classes access to some techniques; over 5 magic items, showing how it's possible to give out techniques as loot; 2 spells, useful for spellcasters more generally; suggested techniques for the 8 official Monk subclasses; NPCs with simplified strike mechanics; and an FAQ with rules help and a brief discussion of why the class is designed like this.

I'd love to get any reviews and/or playtest reports, especially if you've used this in a game. (In lieu of payment; since I've used art under a noncommercial agreement, I can't charge for this.) Thanks!

This is different from, and complementary with, the Pugilist class — a different reimagining of the unarmed and lightly-armored martial character. The martial artist is more customizable and, like the Monk, prefers to avoid the hits; the Pugilist is more out-of-the-box ready and is better at just standing and taking the hits. No affiliation, the Pugilisit is just nice work too; and if you choose a Pugilist, you can still pick up a Martial Artist technique or two using feats.

currently reading version 9.0 and i was wondering there was a monastic technique, jugglers hand that says you know the deflect missiles defensive reaction, does that count against your number of reactions known and if you would already know it would you be allowed to switch is for a different reaction as part of learning jugglers hands?

No, it doesn't count against your number of reactions known.

Yes, you'd be able to switch it for another at the same level when you learned juggler's hands, because you can do that with defensive techniques (but not monastic or strike techniques) once per level anyway. You wouldn't be able to make another switch that level, though.

I made a revision, 9.0.1, that clarifies this in the text.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
