Knights of the Dark Night: a 10th-level Crime-Fighting One-Shot

ADD TO WISHLIST >

It's a grim night in the city of Rothun. A night filled with evildoers and criminals. Where chaos reigns and villains lurk around every corner.

And only a few heroic protectors can keep their city safe.

In Knights of the Dark Night, several heroes with surprisingly similar tragic backstories have been protecting the city of Rothun alone for years. But when Watchmaster Norton flashes the Vigilante-Beam, these heroes must come together to stop the villainous Jester from unleashing his deadly plot on the city that very evening.

Characters can use any combination of races, classes, and alignments to build their hero, but they all share the same backstory:

"After seeing my wealthy parents killed in front of me, I studied for years to become a shadow in the night, striking fear into the heart of evildoers. Today I fight crime in the city of Rothun as a caped hero."

Gather your friends, argue about the best way to build everyone's favorite vigilante hero, and battle it out against some classic villains!

This PDF features:

  • A 4-to-6-hour adventure for 10th-11th level characters set in grim city of Rothun (including a printer-friendly version)
  • Three full-color maps detailing Lawbreaker Lane, the Polar Lounge, and The Rothun Sanatorium
  • Encounters with brand-new villains such as Doctor Frost, Blight, Femme Feline, Grim Gator, Mistress Vine, Deadeye, plus unique stat blocks for The Jester in both humanoid and demonic form.

Hello, I'll be putting my players through this in two days and I am so excited to see the characters they come up with. It's going off the rails already and I know we're going to have a blast. You don't have a CR input for the Jester. I'm putting everything into the encounter builder for my party and I was wondering what CR you would put the Jester at. Thanks!

Hello, I produce a podcast, The Quest Hub, that reviews and discusses TTRPG one-shots and supplements, and our next episode is going to feature this product! We're very excited to discuss it for the show and we take creator attribution seriously. So we intend to include a link to this page for our listeners to have access to the product to pick up if they're interested, we were just wondering if there was another site or any social media accounts you'd like us to to acknowledge or link so our listeners can find your stuff? Feel free to send me a message here, or on Twitter @QuestHubPod. Thanks!

Hey Dane, glad to hear! A link to the product is perfectly good, though my (largely-inactive) Twitter account is mentioned in the module if you'd like to link it as well.

Ran this recently-- was hilariously campy. Players loved meeting all the NPCs (and laughing at me when I mixed up their names)
If you have a group of players that love a lot of combat I would recommend.

ran this for a few friends, we had a laugh, amazing scenario and the players came up with some real funny "superhero" d&d characters. Think we're gonna try and expand it. Well done for inspiring us with such a great one shot!

Hey, I'm going to run this adventure in the near future on Roll20. Had a question about the maps. Could you clarify which events of Chapter 3 happen on which map image, just so I know I'm understanding it correctly?
Also, is it assumed that The Cellar event occurs in an imaginary location since it's intended to be a dialogue-only event?

Sure thing, hope it's not too late--the Sanatorium maps are intended to represent a ground level and a balcony some distance above. The Sanatorium Underground is if the Jester fight moves to Part 2 and the ground drops from beneath the PCs. The Cellar and the optional Giggler attack don't have maps attached, you're right--those encounters are mostly intended as optional or Theater of the Mind.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
