The Phantom of Music: An Adventure of Love and Death

Strange accidents keep happening in the Singing Brass Dragon Opera of Waterdeep. Curtains fall during rehearsals, dancers stumble into the Orchestra pit, a flying glowing skull terrorizes the sceneshifters, and threatening letters arrive each day. Recently, a chandelier fell and killed a new employee. Now, a group of adventurers has been hired to investigate the crime and rumors surrounding the ghost haunting the opera.

An adventure about love and death inspired by Gaston Leroux’s story: The Phantom of the Opera

"The Phantom of Music cleverly adapts the beloved musical into a D&D mystery adventure, resulting in one of the most well-designed, narrative-focuses one-shots on the DM's Guild"

Content Warning:
This adventure contains some sensitive topics from its source material:
  • The Opera Ghost seeks Colleen’s affection against her consent. Keep in mind that the ghost won’t ever force or abuse her physically.
  • There is a character in the novel known as “The Persian”, who is portrayed as a mysterious, exotic and dangerous foreigner.
  • The Ghost was born with a physical deformity on half of its face, which has led to a life of rejection.
  • Certain outcomes end in suicide, depending on player choices.
  • The Ghost’s preferred method of killing its enemies is by hanging them by the neck with a spectral lasso floating in the air.
These issues have been addressed in different ways, but their tropes and the main story remain the same. Reader discretion is advised.

So curious question… How do the horses get from the cellar stable outside? Am I missing something?

That's an awesome question! Specially because that bit is based on the novel and I had to figure out how to make it work.

The horses from C2 can walk into C1, then using the *ramp* they can get to B3, from there, they are free to go to B1, B5 or outside (through B1, between B7 and B8).

Note, the ramp look like stairs on the map because of the software I used, but it is described as a ramp on the book.

Hope it clarifies the situation!

So there's one part of this module I'm a little confused by? What's stopping the players in Act 1 from investigating the sewers and bypassing the flameskull, and skipping Act 2 altogether?

Hi! There are a couple of options in case the party manages to bypass the flameskull:
A) Skip Act 2! Nothing from this act is strictly needed, and it's not intended to last long either. The module includes a couple of guidelines on how to deal with Act 3 if the Opera Ghost doesn't manage to kidnap Colleen.
B) They can enter the Phantom's Lair, but the Opera Ghost may not be on it. (It could be currently plotting or hidding somewhere else, while the "BBEG" is currently on her home plane). The party can investigate the lair and maybe even hijack his master plan early.
C) You can make so that the Opera Managers have the keys for the sewers, maybe the "BBEG" stole it to give the Opera Ghost a bit more time.
D) As the party is about to enter the sewers, the Opera Managers recieve the letter that starts Act 2, potentially interrupting the party.
E) From a real experience I had running this module, the party entered the sewers but weren't able to solve the puzzle/trap...See more

Thanks for the fast response! Those sound like interesting solutions; B) and E) are particularly intriguing.

Hi Andrés! I'm really excited to run this adventure soon, just in time for Halloween! Is there any chance we could get a printer-friendly version of the PDF? I like to make lots of annotations by hand, but I'm really worried the parchment-style background on the pages will make it difficult to do so once the adventure is printed out. Thanks so much!!

So I'm about to run this on Friday with my group and I have two questions! This is only my second time DMing so apologies in advance if they seem intuitive.

03: "Unless kidnapped and replaced by Dread Olga, Mother Ysabeau is in this room praying to the statue of Milil." However, there is no other introduction to her if she IS replaced. Is there a set answer to that or is it up to the DM to handle that?

B2: My biggest question - it says the players can make the managers cooperate with a Persuasion check, but what can they find in the office? There is nothing indicating there is anything noteworthy in the office. Is this just for the ability to interrogate the managers?

Thank you! I'm excited to run this as a long-time Phantom fan!

Hi! Thanks for reaching out.
1) If she IS replaced, the fake one introduces herself at the beginning of Act 2 if the characters don't participate in the improvised performance (see "mother's betrayal"). However you can add her before whenever you want. If that's the case, I recommend having her close to Colleen at all times, speaking good about the Angel of Music and persuading her to stay with it. The fake can also introduce herself to the characters with curious look to do some research on them. If the characters mention the Ghost, she will fake a panic attack and call Colleen for help, causing Colleen to be "hostile" to the charactesr for worrying her mother. The real one can be found in area L2.

2) The managers office contains letters, scripts, reviews, newspapers and the like. If the characters want to investigate, I would recommend a DC 15 Intelligence (Investigation) check to find a couple of newspapers detailing previous disasters caused by the Ghost, such as the...See more

Thank you so much for your prompt response! This was all very informative! I have one last small question! When it comes to the rumor table and the true/false notes, do the players get to know if the rumors are true or false too, or is that something they need to determine themselves?

They need to determine it themselves. The opera staff has no actual clue of which rumors are true or false so an insight check wouldn't work. The players can find that some rumors are fake when crossing different testimonies and finding contradictions, but there is where the fun of using their own brains lay ;)
Please let me know how your game goes! I love hearing such stories (either as a review or at @AzzaelUlbrinter)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
