DC-PoA-CONMAR-01 Something Sinister

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A group of kobold miners have uncovered something very unusual at the bottom of their mine. They need a band of brave adventurers to make sure that what they have found is not a risk to their health.

Are you brave enough to heed the call?

A two to four hour Plague of Ancients Dungeon Craft module for level 1-4 characters.

This module is a D&D Adventurers League Season 10 module, featuring cameos from the Oar's Rest series of adventures. It premieres on the Scandinavian online con, Conmar Yule Union 2021, Saturday January 9th, 2021.

Feb 14th, 2020 - Updated with minor textual updates, scaled the final encounter map and added a wonderful VTT version of the climatic scene map, created by Fernando Dolande. All maps are assembled in the maps zip file.

Jul 12th, 2023 - Updated with Roll20 room, created by Kasper 'KK' Knutzen! Go get it!

[Spoilers ahead!]

I DMed this the other night, and I have a couple of comments:
1. I didn't really see the point of M'agh; why not just have Rinna meet them and give them the job? Also, when the characters find the Reliquarium, it says that M'agh has mentioned the lantern as "something of potentially grand historical value", but I can't see that M'agh or really anyone says anything about what the characters may find.

2. Since none of the characters knew Netherese, there was no way for them to learn the story of the temple, which felt a little unrewarding, especially since there wasn't really any treasure to be found either.

3. Though information can easily be found online, it would have been very helpful to have some about Shar and Chardalyn readily available in the adventure.

4. The fact that the pedestals and the slab in the Reliquarium just needed any liquid seemed very random, and I would have liked something that would indicate that liquid...See more

Hi Karen F,

First of all, thank you for taking your time to both play the module and also ponder on some of the issues it has. Please find by reponses below :) Warning: Contains spoilers :)

1. I agree, M'agh does not play a huge role in 'Something Sinister' as such. He's an explorer, a world traveler, and his presence in Frozenfar may seem sort of random. However, due to his curiousness, he's showing up here, there, and everywhere. As an integrated part of the Oar's Rest adventures, of which Something Sinister is a part, he was given a small, maybe irrelevant, role in Something Sinister. If you pick up the sequel, Put That Thing Right Back, you'll spot a funny little loop where M'agh also plays a small role. His story continues in Two Hearts Apart and he's far from done travelling in the Realms.

Regarding the mention of the lantern, it's a small remnant of a previous text box that was removed. It was not spotted during final read through (spotting the tree and the forest...See more

I have played this adventure twice now and looking to set it for GM'ing soon (TM).
I really like the story and the pace.
Though the start of the adventure with the stuff before you meet up with "The quest people" is not for me personal, the people I have played with found great joy in it.
The many different encounters it is possible to meet before you get to the mine ups the replay-ability and makes it so the GM doesn't "have" to run an encounter they don't like, as they can just choose another.
The adventure has a nice "oh XXX" moment (without spoiling to much), and it's great fun :)
Also enjoy that there are options in place to make it a 2 hour module, should you be strapped for time :)

I purchased this adventure today, and I'm looking forward to reading it and running it! If I'm lucky maybe even play a game run by the author!

Thank you so very much, Richard! I deeply admire your work, and I hope that you find some joy in Something Sinister. Any and all feedback is welcome, and when my family life slows down a bit (mum with Alzheimers and daughter with Borderline), I hope to gather some energy to run online games again. When that happens, you're more than welcome at my table :) //Casper

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
