CCC-UCON03 The Straw Bears

ADD TO WISHLIST >

You return to the peculiar village of Basht for one of their unusual festivals: the procession of the Straw Bears. While there, you meet some old friends and are asked to escort the brave villagers into the woods to continue the party into the night. It should be perfectly safe, shouldn’t it?

A Two to Four-Hour Adventure for Tier 1 Characters.

Optimized for APL 3.

The Straw Bears originally debuted at U-Con on November 2020. (https://www.ucon-gaming.org/) Even though it premiered a year after the premier of The Goat Mayor, the events are set just a few tendays later.

The village of Basht is a little Grimm's Fairy Tale village that was used for several CCCs for local Michigan conventions. I hope that your players enjoy the whimsy and dark undercurrents as much as mine have, and I would love it if you share your experiences in Basht with me!

I've included VTT-friendly maps and handouts in separate files to help with running your games virtually because we can't let a simple thing like physical distance prevent us from sharing our stories.

I also have a printer friendly version included for those that prefer their works to be printed on the flesh of dead trees.

Please see other CCCs written for U-Con:

The Goat Mayor (by me, Daniel Chapman) was where this story began, happening just a few tendays before the events in this adventure.

Blood and Fog (by Alan Patrick) was the first CCC written for U-Con and the first mention of the Blood Lord.

Rescue Down Under (by Alex Lown) continues the story of Basht and revisits the friendly tinkerer Yul Khahan.

“Customs tell a man who he is, where he belongs, what he must do. Better illogical customs than none; men cannot live together without them.”
― Robert A. Heinlein, Citizen of the Galaxy

This story continues on, please check out other adventures in Basht (as well as those in other locations) listed here, or if you just want to leave a message about a suggestion, correction, or just feedback, please reach out to me at:

I ran into some mistakes on the scenario info. Scenario #1- Jocelin's second statement is not false. Scenario #3- Jocelin's second statement is not true. Scenario #6- Hubert's 2nd statement is not true, and Daisy's second statement is not false. I ran #6 and I was distressed when I discovered the error after my party came up with a solution that ended up being wrong per the answer sheet, but correct in their calculations. Also, I could not find where the major magic item was placed. I figured it was the bottle by the tree, but I could be wrong. Everything else went fine.

Let me look at the statements. In a couple of them, I was a bit tricky with the wording and it could be that it was unclear. If there's a problem I'll reply here again, and see if I can get approval to update this. (There's a few tweaks I wanted to do anyhow, but I need to get the AL Admins to approve any changes I make -- but if there's a mistake in the puzzle, I'll need to fix that ASAP).

So thanks for letting me know, I'll reply soon with what I find. (I had to tweak those puzzles many times, as a result of playtesting. I wanted to have it so that the players could solve it even without the bonus clue they discovered earlier. So, I made sure that each set of liars had a guaranteed paradoxical group of statements.)

The bottle was definitely the one by the tree. Though, feel free to move it around where you think it might be fun. When I've run it, my players always seem sooooooo cautious because I have this wide open map, it makes me think I might have made a mistake by putting it so...See more

Yeah, oops!

Scenario 3: I definitely messed up with Jocelin's statement, I guess I should change it to be just "both imposters" and it works. (The imposters are the only ones that need to have self-contradictory statements.)

Scenario 6: Looks like we just need to swap those two statements and it should work.

Man, I swear I checked and double-checked those over and over, and somehow I still managed to have errors sneak in.

Glad you were able to use some DM magic. :) Always the secret of a good DM, smile and nod when the players came up with a solution, as long as they used the right logic.

I'm going to see when I can get the edits in place.

Though, I'm going to be busy this week -- we have U-Con coming up again this weekend, as a weird coincidence, so I'm going to be finishing up WBW-DC-UCON-1 -- which will continue this story where we left off. ("The Party that Split") One year later.

Thank you...See more

Btw, Snowball made an appearance in town. He is very popular. There were questions as to where Mayor Goodman was up to. I think my players still want to get him out of that bottle.

I never came back here to update you: I've uploaded a new version with all of the fixes (I might have done that earlier), but today I also uploaded a spreadsheet that would allow you to check the logic as well as make your own version of the puzzles. I became paranoid after checking and double checking, I had to do something automatic. :)

Also, Eric G -- if you contact me via the website http://hoshisabi.com I'll send along a copy of another adventure as a thank you for catching my error. Always good to have another set of eyes on things.

My apologies to anyone who picked this up already, I had forgotten to upload the printer-friendly version. I will be adding that, along with some edits, and then working with the AL Admins to get things square.

But if you need the printer-friendly version now, let me know and I can mail it to you in the meantime.

In addition, Malthorn is the character of my late brother-in-law. I missed the note in the credits to say that. It will appear in the next update, but in the meantime here is what I wanted it to say:
Malthorn and Rustle were the characters of and are included in fond memory of my friend and brother-in-law David Ditsch, also a man of few words and content to listen and chuckle at any jokes at the table. Nothing made him chuckle more than when the other PCs were creeped out by his new companion Rustle. He would have been highly amused if that continues beyond our table.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
