Welcome to the Fleshing Out Curse of Strahd: Player Primer!

This character chronicler was designed to inspire the creation of player characters for the Curse of Strahd campaign and includes documents for both Dungeon Masters and players alike.

Within this product, you'll find 4 different documents to help you prepare for the Curse of Strahd module:

  • Player Primer - This document includes background information to help ready new players for their upcoming campaign. It also contains several tables of player character backstory options to help them develop characters suitable for the module. This document is spoiler free and player friendly!
  • Barovian Player Primer - This document contains many of the tables found in the Player Primer, but rewritten to better suit a player character from Barovia. This primer is best used if you lose a player character to the horrors of Barovia and must introduce a new character to the party.
  • Character Options - This document includes 4 new race options suited to the Ravenloft setting: Dusk Elf, Vistani, Wereraven, and Werewolf.
  • Mysterious Secrets - This final document includes 18 different secrets that can help integrate player character backstories into the Curse of Strahd adventure.

Since the publication of The Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount in March 2020, a couple different player primers have been published to help players integrate their characters into campaign settings. Most notably, we've seen the "Heroic Chronicle: Sword Coast and the North", which helps integrate characters generally into the Sword Coast, and the Player Primer: Icewind Dale, which helps develop characters specifically for the Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden adventure module.

This primer was designed specifically for the Curse of Strahd campaign, to similarly assist in the character creation process. It reflects ideas and tables found in the previously mentioned work, but all rewritten to better suit the Ravenloft setting. With this set of campaign supplements, players should be able to develop characters that not only have depth and thriving backstories, but are also aimed towards the upcoming adventure.

Enjoy!

This set of campaign supplements was created for the "Fleshing Out Curse of Strahd" series, originally posted under the r/CurseofStrahd subreddit. The Fleshing Out series attempts to add depth to various NPCs, streamline confusing plot lines, fill in plot holes, and alleviate some of the stress associated with TPK inducing encounters in the Curse of Strahd campaign. Find the original posts and my other work under my Reddit username, u/MandyMod.

I would personally like to thank u/DragnaCarta, u/Ziopliukas, and all of my followers on the subreddit for your ongoing support and feedback. I love you guys from the bottom of my heart.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
