Build Your Own Patch

Build Your Own Patch Title

Build Your Own D&D 5.1 Patch is a large list of updates and changes that you can add to your game. Some of them work together or rely on one another, but most of them are modular and can be applied to your games as you like. The Player's Reference is merely a list of rules and systems, while the Core Changes and Extended Options documents provide the rules and systems along with thorough explanations of the intent behind the designs. This empowers Dungeon Masters to add, remove, or alter various elements at their leisure with less risk of unintended consequences. The Build Your Own 5.1 Patch project is all about giving DMs the tools they need to solve the problems in their games. It even includes an assessment of what potential consequences you may face when employing common house or variant rules.

What to Expect:

  • More Options in Combat. More ways to build your martial classes, and a greater ability to create hybrid caster/martial classes.
  • Appealing Grapple. The grapple system has been altered to provide a clearer niche in combat. It may not appeal to everyone, but it now allows the players a unique approach that was difficult or impossible to achieve before!
  • Flying is Risky. The changes to flight make staying airborne while under attack difficult. It also includes additions to monster stat blocks that create new tactical options for players when dealing with flying creatures without rendering larger creatures (such as dragons) vulnerable while flying.
  • Weapon Choice Matters. Many weapons have been reworked in order to provide more interesting niches for them. Your choice of weapon is now a meaningful decision!
  • Armor Customization. Armor types now have new upgrade options, which are locked to specific armor types, meaning armor is no longer a linear upgrade path. You may decide you want to keep that old ring mail armor and add some customizations!
  • Better Feats.Rather than simply add attribute increases to every feat to make them more attractive options, the feats have been improved by pushing them even further in the direction they were already going. Feats are now more powerful, and you're less likely to simply take ASI!
  • Huge List of Extended Options. The Extended Options provide a huge number of rules and additions, including half-feats, upgrades to almost all existing feats, and multiple new systems that are designed to be modular so that you can add them wherever and whenever you like. There are even wholly new systems, like an in-depth Sanity system designed to generate horror while still allowing options to reward players for being heroic, despite the dangers!

The 5.1 project is intended for you to empower you to make changes that you find are most applicable to your game, while still making sure that the changes are well-considered and polished designs. The Core Changes section encompasses the most highly-tested designs with the broadest application.

The full-size preview currently encompasses the entirety of the Core Changes document. The purchase currently gets you:

  1. Core Changes pdf
  2. Extended Options pdf
  3. Player's Reference pdf (which remove explanations, intro/conclusion, and homebrew rules commentary)

I was looking through the trial version, only concluding the core changes and it is magneficient so far. The only flaw I can observe so far, is the for me not obviously missing section with the mentioned and explained combat maneuvers. There is an explanation for how to use them but not the detailed information what the specific does. As what does feint exactly do, or parry. I would like to know where it is to find this missing info, with that it would be a complete and very well made enhancement for the current edition of DnD.

Hey, I'm glad you like it! Yeah, that is fair. I should probably specify that these are the maneuvers from the Battle Master subclass in the PhB. Here's a link to a wikidot page with a complete list:

I'll update the pdf to clarify that, too, so no one else has the same issue.

It's there a way to pay nothing, evaluate the PDF, then come back and pay?

Yes! This was initially done through Reddit, but a few small issues arose. I'm working on fixing those, but I've also changed the PDF preview to be the full document now.

Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
