5 Minute Workday Presents: Allies Against the Night

Sidekicks of Ravenloft. Allies, new and old, updated to 5e
by “Jester” David Gibson

Fifteen Twenty-two heroic (or at least not overtly wicked) NPCs to add your Ravenloft Campaign or ongoing Curse of Strahd game, plus two adventuring parties and eight brand new characters.

The NPCs in this product use the sidekick rules reprinted in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, and that product is strongly reccomended. Some NPCs have no level and can be freely advanced using the sidekick class options found in that book. Others start at a higher level and have custom classes designed to match their character. Also incuded where necassary are variant options, that can replace sidekick class features found in Tasha's Cauldron, for these characters or other sidekicks of your own creations.

Have your party encounter a rookie 5th level Doctor van Richten and help him face his first golem! Or introduce them to a 15th level van Richten who is near the end of his days, and trying to train the next generation of champions.

Featured sidekicks include:

  • Ezmerelda d'Avenir, fan favourite champion from Curse of Strahd
  • Brother Dominic, member of the Order of Guardians, introduced in the novel Tapestry of Dark Souls
  • Riverboat Captain and protagonist of Dance of the Dead, Larissa Snowmane
  • The Great Detective Alanik Ray, from Champions of the Mists.
  • The half-golem of Nova Vaasa, Desmond LaRouche
  • Jander Sunstar from the novel Vampire of the Mists, who is absolutely not dead in Avernus
  • "S", the not particularly heroic author of the Doomsday Gazeteers
  • Champion of the Morninglord, Eia Pax
  • The neophyte monster slayers, the Weathermay-Foxgrove Twins
  • The Vistani caravan known as the Wanderers from Specter of the Black Rose
  • And, of course, two versions of Doctor Rudolph van Richten: a classic rogue-inspired doctor and one with clerical spellcasting

This is the (unplanned) but requested companion book to Who's Doomed: The Lords of Ravenloft, focusing on the "good guys" rather than the baddies. Now UPDATED with even more goodness (almost doubling in size) because it's now a Copper selling product!!

Eleven sidekicks have personalized advancement tables, while several others have optional features that can replace the default options in Tasha's Cauldron.

PURCHASER
It's a great module involving not only characters who are deep in the lore of Ravenloft, but the ability to turn them into sidekicks to add some depth. I was a little disappointed in not seeing Larissa Snowmane character from Champions of the Mists. Admittedly, she is one of my favorites.

Like my darklords book, I wanted to get the product out and see if there was interest. If it sells well and hits Copper I'll probably add some more sidekicks, like Larissa Snowmane and maybe Hermos.
I like Larissa too, but balancing her magic whip and dance of the dead was... tricky.

(I'd also like to add some original sidekicks like a kenku/ ravenkin or wereraven working for the Knights of the Black Feather and a caliban or some kind. But didn't want to imply my own inventions were coming at the cost of classic characters.)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
