Arctic Survival House Rules for Icewind Dale

Icewind Dale Survival House Rules

This homebrew content has over 50 House Rules to build and expand upon the realms of Icewind Dale, by presenting Dungeon Masters with in-depth rule options to highlight the terrible difficulty of survival in this setting. The content of this text is meant to be customized toward your players and the type of game you and your party find healthy, enjoyable, rewarding...and mortifying. I would also encourage you to reward your players with upgrades to these rules as they slowly master the terrifying terrain of Icewind Dale.

Extreme Cold Homebrews

A major component of surviving Icewind Dale will be mastering survival in snowy terrain. Since your party will be exposed to the elements, there will be consequences to prolonged exposure, both for the party and their physical goods. I introduce a new scaling cold system called Frost Checks, Cold Weather Gear, Item Durability, and some items suited to surviving in the cold.

Survival Homebrews

How to run Avalanches, Blizzards, Death, Lingering Injuries, Travel, Rest, and much more! I have complete breakdowns of each of these along with tips and tricks on how to customize them for yourself.

New Mechanics and Systems

I have 6 different systems for Skill Challenge type events on how to have your players roll for climactic moments at the table. I also created a new way to roll for group encoutners that combine DM rolls, Player rolls, and Roll Tables all in one quick and efficient system.

Horror Homebrews

New Horror mechanics and tables to get across the feeling of FEAR and TERROR at your table

I really do hope you enjoy what is in this PDF and spark some creative ideas for your table!

Where is the Environmental Hazards Table? I see it is listed in the Travle Tables Table, but it is the only table I can't find in the PDF

I've been trying to use the tables but find myself struggling to find the tables I need to roll on. In process of creating a DM screen type layout that I can print to easier manage all the new rules/rolls that go with extreme weather.

One thing I've found so far is players nearly ALWAYS are able to pass the FC check without even rolling, (they spent 1000gp on cold weather gear to get +15 mod just with their clothing.) Wondering if others are finding this common?

Hi! This looks like a great product, and I am super excited to start to integrate it into my Rime of the Frostmaiden Campaign! Thank you for contributing to the D&D community ad=nd making such a quality product.
I do have some questions about the content.
Do you add your constitution modifier to frost checks (It does not specify in the PDF)?
When do you make Frost checks? Every hour, or just at night?

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
