Monsters of the Infinite Planes

Multiverse of Monsters and Adversaries

Fully bookmarked PDF! Color interior art! Crack open the Monsters of the Infinite Planes and unlock a multiverse of monsters and adversaries!

Fantasy Grounds version now available!

Monsters_of_the_Infinite_Planes_SmCover.

Beyond the Material Plane, the multiverse stretches out in infinite directions with infinite possibilities. It would be foolish to think life didn’t exist in this vast landscape, though that life is most certainly going to look and act somewhat differently than the creatures on the Material Plane. How does a beleaguered Dungeon Master handle it all?

By using Monsters of the Infinite Planes of course!

This book compiles the monsters presented in the Codex of the Infinite Planes series, pulling them together into one tome filled with creatures and denizens that populate the planes. Over 230 monsters are collected here, some of which are updates to classics from previous editions while many are wholly unique creations, each designed to be fun and thematic in play.

Bring the planes of the multiverse alive with a host of creatures ranging from the sunflies of Mount Celestia (challenge rating 1/4) to the mighty shoggoths that roam Pandemonium and beyond (challenge rating 16). For a long time, the planes has been the purview of high-level characters, but the creatures in this collection run the gamut. As a setting and playground, the planes should entice and challenge characters of all levels. Though only the bravest should face the blade golems of Acheron or the wildly strange kleetarn of Limbo in combat!

Take this book and populate your planar adventures with monsters of all kind. When coupled with the Codex of the Infinite Planes book itself you’ll have enough material to fill many campaigns with wonder, excitement, and danger.

Want a multiverse of adventure to explore? Check out Codex of the Infinite Planes!

First of all, this book is great. I think that your books on DMsguild are absolutely top-notch, with the codex being a resource that I will probably be using into the far foreseeable future. And I would gladly give this book a 5/5 if not for one thing. One of the previous comments pointed this out, but this book is really missing out on all of its content without having a simple table detailing what monsters appear in what planes. Everything else is perfect, and I was quite surprised that nearly every page is chalk filled with illustrations. Just please add a table with all the creatures categorized by planes. As soon as you do I would be very happy to leave 5 stars for this, because that's what you deserve!

Thank you very much! I agree about the list of creatures by planes, and I have a few other things I want to get added to the PDF before getting it updated (new monsters from the Outlands, the Far Realm, and the Positive/Negative Energy Planes). In the meantime I put this product up for free, but the idea is that it will be added to this release in the near future.

Thank you again for the kind words!

Was it intended for ancient gargoyles to be resistant to magical weapon attacks?

CREATOR
Yes! I wanted to give them damage resistance that could only by bypassed by adamantine weapons, a normally much rarer material (though on the Plane of Earth there is theoretically an unlimited supply of adamantine as well as all other minerals and ore!). In my playtests it didn't significantly change the combat profile of the ancient gargoyle, maybe keeping them around for a round or two longer, though other energy damage types proved just as useful (the saving throw boost from Magic Resistance only goes so far!).

Thanks for the quick reply... can I also ask where the Noble Marid went? :D

Good catch! Ah yes, the noble marid. It was an unfortunate victim of poor design that slipped under my radar as I got closer to release. I still intend to fix it and get it added, along with a few other tidbits, so watch for those in the next few months :) Thanks!

Archons all seem to have the following ability:

"Teleport. The archon magically teleports, along with any equipment it is wearing or carrying, up to 6 feet to an unoccupied space it can see."

I'm not sure how far they're supposed to be able to teleport, but surely 6 feet can't be right? Everything in D&D is in 5-foot squares, generally.

(I mean, a 6-foot teleport isn't actually a useless ability -- it would help the archons escape a grapple, anyway. But still.)

Unrelatedly: I like the jotun, but it feels weird to have a race of celestials that aren't particularly good or evil, especially since we seem to be missing a set of chaotic-good celestials. (I liked the old eladrin, honestly, but now that "eladrin" is just an elf subrace I have no idea what should have that role.)

Oops! It should definitely be 60 feet - I'll update it in the master doc. I've got some other minor revisions and text updates to get out so the updated version should be out in the a few weeks I hope.

Regarding the jotun - I definitely wanted to create a celestial race for that chaotic good space, but I wanted to make them more interesting. The jotuns are emotionally powerful celestials, and over time their continuing conflict with the gods of the Aesir in Ysgard has driven many to darker pursuits. I still see them largely as a chaotic good force, but I didn't want to explicitly make them CG all the time. One of these days I'll get around to writing Ecology of the Jotun to further explore some of their more interesting details!

Is there a table somewhere listing monsters by plane? The book is great but tricky if my players jump to a random plane to work with these creatures on the fly.

Excellent question! There isn't right now but I'm working on getting it done. Essentially the list would look like the monsters by ecology in the DMG, but just broken down by plane. Once completely I'll get it added as an Appendix to this product (and the Codex of the Infinite Planes as it has value there too). Thank you!

Are these monsters included in the Codex of the Infinite Planes or would I need both products?

Good question! The monsters originally appeared in the individual volumes of the Codex of the Infinite Planes (volumes 1 through 26). I've added art, cleaned up the layout, and combined them into one bestiary, but otherwise they are the same as those individual volumes. The compiled Codex of the Infinite Planes linked to on this product page does not contain the monsters - the book would have been too large! So I split out the compilation between the gazetteer info and the monsters. I hope this helps, thank you!

Good catch! I had to go back to my original doc for Mount Celestia, and it looks like I goofed up on the Celestial Sword feature. It's in the Throne Archon stat block but needs to be in the Sword Archon! I'll update the file and get a new version uploaded, everything else looks correct about them. Thank you!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
