Codex of the Infinite Planes is a Dungeons & Dragons supplement expanding upon the planes of existence. The planes have been a presence in Dungeons & Dragons since the earliest days of the game, with multiple sourcebooks (and even an entire setting) dedicated to describing the fantastic worlds existing beyond the Material Plane.

Most of these previously released sourcebooks are constrained in scope and content by serving multiple purposes. Codex of the Infinite Planes is dedicated to detailing exciting and usable content centered around the known planes of existence for the purpose of using in memorable adventures. The known planes of existence, in this case, includes the four elemental Inner Planes and their intersections, the two transitive planes, three echo planes, and sixteen Outer Planes.

Each plane receives a detailed description, including game mechanics handling hazards and phenomena, notes on traveling to and within the plane, a look at the powerful people and organizations operating on the plane, a review of the monstrous inhabitants, a host of interesting sites and treasures, random encounter tables for each plane, and adventure hooks providing examples of using the plane in a scenario. The information is largely aimed at Dungeon Masters looking to craft exciting adventures utilizing the planes, but the information is valuable to players looking to create characters tied to the greater multiverse of the campaign setting.

Other releases in the Infinite Planes series provide content useful in different ways. Monsters of the Infinite Planes provides creature statistics for over 200 monsters inhabiting the planes along with helpful generic statistics for planar NPCs. Heroes of the Infinite Planes includes new subclass options for each class along with new feats, spells, and magical items. Look for these releases on the DMs Guild!

Contents of the Codex

This book provides information for the Dungeon Master helpful to utilizing the known planes of existence in their campaign settings. Alternately, it can be used as a complete campaign setting in itself! The contents of the book are roughly defined as follows. Much of the information is meant to supplement the content in the Dungeon Master’s Guide, specifically Chapter 2: Creating a Multiverse.

Chapter 1 Essence of the Infinite Planes outlines the general principals of the planes of existence as they exist within Dungeons & Dragons, along with definitions for common terms used throughout the book.

Chapter 2 Using the Infinite Planes provides tips and suggestions on how to use the planes of existence in your campaign, along with details on traveling through them and a glossary of keywords that can be helpful to find useful information in the book.

Chapter 3 Gazetteer of the Infinite Planes forms the bulk of the book and includes detailed descriptions of 26 planes of existence. Planes detailed include: Plane of Air, Plane of Earth, Plane of Fire, Plane of Water, Border Elemental Planes, Astral Plane, Ethereal Plane, Plane of Shadows, Plane of Faerie, Plane of Dreams, Infinite Layers of the Abyss, Infernal Battlefield of Acheron, Olympian Glades of Arborea, Peaceable Kingdoms of Arcadia, Wilderness of the Beastlands, Twin Paradises of Bytopia, Tarterian Depths of Carceri, Blessed Fields of Elysium, Bleak Eternity of Gehenna, Gray Waste of Hades, Ever-Changing Chaos of Limbo, Clockwork Nirvana of Mechanus, Seven Heavens of Mount Celestia, Nine Hells of Baator, Windswept Depths of Pandemonium, and Heroic Domains of Ysgard!

Chapter 4 The Codex and Its Keepers describes the Codex of the Infinite Planes itself, along with the planar sages dedicated to studying its mysteries.

Chapter 5 Toolbox provides information for crafting new planes of existence. It includes a master list of all hazards and phenomena from Chapter 3 along with suggestions on how to build new planes of existence. They’re not known as the Infinite Planes for nothing!

I have been eyeing the various components of this for a while now. How compatible would you say it is with 3.5?

Thank you for your inquiry! I would say this compiled Codex collection is mostly system agnostic - each plane gets an overview of the features and hazards, which is where the game system material is located, but overall it's a small component of each entry. The denizens, interesting sites, adventure hooks, highlights, lay of the land, and travel information would be relevant to ANY game featuring these planes of existence. And for 3.5, I would say most of it could be converted rather easily depending on the difficulty you wanted to convey (adjusting save DCs and damage for appropriate hazards, for example). The Codex of the Infinite Planes artifact is found in the Epic Level Handbook, though the version depicted in this codex is different (and again, I think overall very convertible to 3.5). Wow, thanks for the quick reply, Dave! Does the Codex have quasi-elementals and para-elementals? They were ignored in 3.5. If so, how hard would they be to convert to 3.5? I always thought they offered a nice break from the standard four elementals that most of the players know too well. :-D Do you think they would be hard to convert than, say, Pathfinder versions?

No problem! When I compiled the list of planes, I debated on how to handle the para-elemental planes (intersection between each Inner Plane) and the quasi-elemental planes (intersection between each Inner Plane and the Negative and Positive Plane). Ultimately, for my sanity and the sake of getting it all done, I lumped the para-elemental planes together into the Border Elemental Planes and moved the quasi-elemental planes off to the side. Right now, I'm working on the Codex Appendix (which will be a separate product), which is going to include the Positive and Negative Energy Planes, the Outlands, and the Far Realm. I'm working the quasi-elemental planes into regions of each Positive and Negative Energy Plane for the sake of organization and content. That isn't to say you couldn't have them be their own separate planes, though their general lack of features makes it difficult to incorporate into a setting I've found.

Hi Dave,

Is there any way to bundle the "Codex of" and "Monsters of" titles for those of us who have the previous separated volumes? I have all of the previous volumes except Ysgard, and I know that this title and the "Monsters of" title has most of the same info, but I don't want to miss out on any edits or additional work you've put into these single PDF compilations (plus it would be nice to have them in single themed books for quick reference instead of having 26+ documents). I just can't justify spending another $40ish when I would be essentially re-paying for around 75% of the content.

I am about to go pick up "Heroes of" though, since that seems to be all new!

Yes, at least for the para-elemental planes. I worked on them in a single grouping under the Border Elemental Planes title, and includes information for Ash, Ice, Magma, and Ooze. The quasi-elemental planes (Inner Planes under the influence of the Positive and Negative Energy Planes) are going to be absorbed largely into an upcoming release for the Appendices, which covers the Far Realm, Positive and Negative Energy Planes, and the Outlands. While a separate release, this will also be worked into this full version of the Codex of the Infinite Planes as well. Thank you!

Any chance I could get the image on the front cover of the book without the graphics and title (Jack Kaiser illustrates the Orrery of the Infinite Planes in the Great Modron Cathedral on Mechanus, while a group of planar sages consult their copy of the Codex of the Infinite Planes)? Not the full size image. I just love it.

Hello, it's been some time since I've been on DMs Guild. I had already previously purchased Volumes 1-18 of the series and was actually about to purchase the remainder when I saw this. Is this a collected version? Does it include more than the individual volumes do not? Is it worth purchasing both? I do love this series and would like to continue to support your work.

Thank you for your interest! It is a collection of the individual entries (all current volumes, 1-26). The monsters and PC options moved to their own books, and I expanded each entry with additional content (along with some editing), mainly in the area of monstrous inhabitants of each plane. There's also the intro chapters, information on the Rivers Styx and Oceanus, Yggdrasil the World Tree, artifact stats for the Codex of the Infinite Planes itself, a new NPC group called the Codex Keepers, random tables for generating new planes, and a master list of all the hazards and phenomena!

Good question! I've been working on this project for almost 3 years, and during that time I would release the individual plane with monsters and gazetteer information as I completed them. Those products are still up, but the best value I think is in the Codex of the Infinite Planes full PDF (this product on this page) along with the Monsters of the Infinite Planes (linked to in the description above). There's more content in those two products than the whole of the individual Codex entries. I'm leaving the old ones up mainly to keep options for those that only need info on one of the planes, but the best value is in the complete PDF versions. Eventually I'll get Heroes of the Infinite Planes released as well that contains PC options! I hope this helps, thank you for your interest!

I love Planescape and this was a great way to help bring elements of it into my 5e campaign. My only question was the book refers to the Positive and Negative Energy Planes in several places but they don't have sections of their own. Did you have any plans to write anything expanding on them at any point in the future?

Absolutely! I meant to add them in as an appendix to the full volume but wanted to get it up and out. Now that it is, I'm working on fleshing out those two planes - they're each uninhabitable at their core, but I'm incorporating the ideas of the "quasi-elemental" planes into them to create usable spaces (Lightning, Mineral, Steam, and Radiance for Positive Energy Plane, and Salt, Dust, Vacuum, and Ash for Negative Energy). I hope to have it added to the PDF in a few weeks!

You would normally be right to think so! However, under current DMsGuild guidelines, Planescape is not an allowable setting to use in DMsGuild products. Sigil is what I consider one of the three core components of the Planescape campaign (the other two being the factions and the idea that belief shapes the planes), so I could not use the City of Doors for the Codex. If that ever changes, I'll definitely loop back and add in details about the city, though there is a wealth of existing content covering the city already.

Thank you! It's been a blast working on this project over the past 2 1/2 years, and I've got some more stuff coming (Far Realm, Energy Planes, World Serpent Inn!)

As far as the Outlands go, largely yes, because so much of the Outlands is tied to Sigil and the gate-towns, all part of the Planescape setting. There's room to explore more, and I've got it earmarked for an appendix article, but it might be a bit before it comes up in the queue to work on. If Planescape ever does get released I'll probably bump it up though! Thanks again!

That's strange! I just downloaded the file and Tarterian Depths of Carceri goes from page 214 to 226 and Blessed Fields of Elysium runs from page 227 to 239. I'm not sure what could have happened if your copy is missing those, but it may be worth downloading the PDF again to see if it works now. Let me know the result!

Excellent question! I added new content to each of the individual Codex for the compilation, specifically two new sections for each plane: Highlights & Impressions, providing helpful ways to make the plane distinct during play, and Creatures & Denizens, highlighting common creatures by type (each plane features three or four monster types and examples of inhabitants). The total content added for this was about 30K words! And then there's the info on using the planes in Chapter 2, along with the description of the Codex itself as an artifact, a review of the its keepers, and the toolbox containing random tables and a master list of all Hazards & Phenomena for reference (and rolling randomly if you wanted!). My goal will be to update the individual Codex entries with the Highlights & Impressions and Creatures & Denizens information but it's going to take some time to go through all of them and update the PDFs. I also added more art throughout the PDF itself, mostly stock art from the DMsGuild...See more

Sadly, I had to cut that content from the final release, but I'm still working on it. It will likely get an appendix release (or if I can't get POD I'll just add it into this PDF where it was originally going to be!). The Far Realm is ... hard though, because its alien nature bends and breaks every natural rule. To capture that in a game is difficult but I've got some ideas :) Thanks!

That being said, there's plenty of Far Realm influence all over the planes. The key places are the Plane of Dreams and the Windswept Depths of Pandemonium, and the Monsters of the Infinite Planes include D&D stats for gugs, zoogs, shoggoths, dream cats, nightgaunts, and other Lovecraftian beasties that originate from the Far Realm!

Cool. I'm definitely interested in that appendix when it comes out! My players are investigating a Far Realm incursion into the Prime Material Plane right now and I'm having a blast making everything uncanny and weird.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
