From the best-selling authors of The Dark Archetypes & Tome of Poisons

Our world is shrouded by a veil. A veil that protects us from the wickedness of the unknown and the horrors of the incomprehensible. Devils and gods, demons and tricksters, the holy and the unholy, they are everywhere around us, unseen by mortals. But the veil grows thinner and the nights grow darker. They walk among us and away from us. They inhabit mountains and islands, bridges and sewers. They are inside our houses and our temples, above us in the sky and below us within the oceans.

They are the yōkai.

Hi there I love this pdf. Any chance you have the monster stat blocks in text format too rather than pdf? I would like to copy paste them over to Foundry without having to type each one up if possible. Thanks!

Hi, I love yokais, but if I purchase this compendium, I can import the tokens to roll20 and use them immediately?? Or I have to create the tokens manually using the information on this compendium?? Thanks

The tokens are in a .rar file
You will have to either download the WinRAR app (which is a very popular free app) or 7-Zip. Once you download one of those, right click on the .rar file and click "Extract Files"

Beautiful artwork, and a great way to bring in underused Japanese mythology into D&D.

Very nice illustration, amazing work on statblocks... each statblock tells a story and it makes you immerse on their fluff and lore. The aesthetic and the reading prespective is a refreshing aspect of storytelling alone. Buy the product you wont regret it... Keep up the good work guys!!

this was a good read love the Tsuchinoko and the tokens look cool.
I would like to know the design behind the Kijin because at CR40 it's so powerful why is that?

Hey George. Glad to know you enjoyed reading our book.

The Kijin is actually a combination of two yōkai: Ōtakemaru and Shuten Dōji; an oni god and the king of all oni, respectively.
Feel free to search up their names for some extra insights regarding their origins, but bear in mind you will be in for some very graphic descriptions of violence.
We decided to present them as one entry because of the fact that they are both parts of the "Great Three Evil Yōkai of Japan" and share similarities since both are oni (though the general flavor leans more towards Ōtakemaru).
That said, their significance in Japanese folklore and the extreme strength that legends portray them to possess prompted us to take a peculiar approach in statting it, making it a CR 40 creature.

Stay tuned for our next milestone (electrum), since we will be updating the supplement with a new PDF that will include battle tactics for each yōkai and insights about their Challenge Rating.

Umm...could you change the pdf so it would work on kindle tablets? Keep being told it's DRM protected(no idea what that means) and can't view it.
Tried downloading it several times but same result...

As someone who plays on virtual tabletop games like Roll20, do you think you could add a zip folder with the token files? It would be a great addition for these wonderful monsters

Hello there! I'm interested on buying this product, especially since I want to expand on Kara-Tur/Asian related stories. But I would like to ask if this product undergoes any sensitivity reading from Asian (specifically Japanese) person? Is there any Asians involved in the creation?

Hey Isaac! While our main team is not Japanese, the lore was written by a Japanese mythology expert (who IS japanese). We hope you find what you are looking for in our product :)

Thank you, this was the one big concern I had before I could add to cart. Glad about it!

Quick question though, DMs' Guild and the document preview credit Alexander Kami for lore. Your response suggests that the lore expert wasn't part of the main team, but Alexander Kami is cited for a bunch of other roles in development of the pdf. Is Mr. Kami the Japanese mythology expert, or did he collaborate with someone who isn't credited in the document itself? I think it's important that we credit our collaborators, especially when when it comes to cultural sensitivity!

Hey Phillip! Thanks for your interest in our supplement. We have gotten this question quite a few times on our platforms so allow me to clarify the situation with as much transparency as possible.

First of all, I would like to note something for context. Folklore is public domain. It belongs to everyone.
However, it is considered common knowledge that the first documented yōkai compendium was written (and illustrated) by Toriyama Sekien; an 18th-century Japanese scholar and poet, largely unheralded in Western scholarship, whose students went on to lead the vanguard of Japanese art. Since then, numerous books have been released based on his material and translated by various authors. I took it upon myself to do the same. Thus, even though I could not have possibly collaborated with a dead man, the lore IS technically written by him. I simply modified it to match the Dungeons & Dragons theme, but crediting him would be the same as crediting Aisopos or Homer for a Greek mythos product....See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
