Kill Bhaal Vol. 1

Kill Bhaal Volume 1

Mystra is tired of getting murdered. Whether due to the scheming of her fellow gods or the boundless greed of mortals messing with magical forces beyond their understanding—or just Helm being an obdurate jerk—people keep killing Mystra, and she's over it. Since murder is the domain of a specific god, there's one obvious solution:

֍ Tackle a 4-5 session level 20 adventure!

֍ Team up with Mystra, God of Magic, to kill Beshaba, God of Misfortune!

֍ Combine mechanics from early encounters into a climactic final battle!

֍ Take the first steps toward ascending to godhood!

Kill Bhaal Volume 1

If you're familiar with the film that inspired this adventure, you'll know Bhaal doesn't figure prominently here due to the title: Volume 1. The target in this adventure is Beshaba because... well, luck plays a significant roll in this world.

This is a self-contained story with an opening that provides a way to bring level 20 characters in from another campaign and an ending that has story hooks to send characters on a new adventure if so desired.

Meet Your Heroes

Level 20 characters are powerful and adventures for them should feel special. Slaying gods, rubbing shoulders with famous characters, and making decisions that change the fate of the world are all in a day's work here. Chapter 1 is a rollercoaster through 5e's most notable locations, taking you from the Yawning Portal to Auril's frozen north to other planes like Ravnica and Theros! Plus, in keeping with the theme of luck, the encounters are randomly selected so every game of Kill Bhaal plays out differently!

Each encounter teaches the party a mechanic that plays a role in the final showdown with Beshaba, from angry dice with auras that twist luck to hallucinogenic enemies that only interact with afflicted characters. The mechanics are designed to force difficult choices and require cooperation to present new challenges for characters that are almost as powerful as gods themselves. Level 20 will never feel the same again!

Experience the adventure in style with gorgeous custom art and layout, or save on ink with a printer-friendly black and white version with backgrounds removed. In addition to the adventure, which comes with copious DM tips on role-playing NPCs, scaling the complexity of encounters, and tracking new mechanics, you also get:

֍ 5 custom monster stat blocks

֍ 3 maps you can print or import into virtual tabletops

֍ 11 new magic items to loot from Beshaba

֍ Print-ready token sheet to track new conditions and bonuses

I assure you this adventure is quality, five stars, a masterpiece. How do I know? Because it includes me!

What is this "Dungeon Guild" you speak of? It sounds like something that should be under my purview.

Filled with lies and slander. Incomprehensible how it was published, unless Volo did it.

Any news if there will be a Vol 2? Thanks!

Grady would like to do it but it is not in progress at this time. If done, it will be a full book with paths for fighting a large portion of the pantheon, so it's going to take a while and other projects are more pressing due to the relatively low sales of Volume 1.

One thing that just came up with my group that is playing this adventure - with a level 20 druid, the Bound by the Weave ability becomes infinite healing. I've limited it his use of the ability to a number of times per day equal to his spellcasting modifier, but maybe something to adjust in the sequel. Which I am GREATLY looking forward to!!!

Thanks for pointing that out! I'll take a look at the interactions and see if I can tweak the wording or implement a limit similar to your solution. -Grady

I may have missed it, but how many players is this adventure for? Sorry if you put it up and I'm just blind, lol

It should work for anywhere from 3-6 though 4-5 is likely the sweet spot. You may have to ramp down the legendary actions and one or two mechanics in the final fight if you only have 3 players and you may need to boost the slaadi hit points if you have 6 min-max characters.

Why does this appear when I look up for adventures based on Ravnica?
Customer avatar
Theo T October 20, 2020 3:19 pm UTC
A section of the adventure is set in Ravnica.

I'm unsure of how I feel about your portrayal of Kelemvor and I feel like the otherworldliness of the gods isn't really portrayed in this adventure, but I might end up getting it anyway because of how much I love god themed adventures. Also I just realised last night that the title and design of Mystra are plays on the movie Kill Bill

That's fair. I definitely opted for making the gods more human and less otherworldly, which was partly a function of the Kill Bill influence. Any potential sequel would be broader in scope.

I've just read the preview and I'm absolutely in love with this adventure. Considering all the targets, how many volumes can we expect in the future?
Customer avatar

There's a section that addresses this after the preview cuts off to avoid spoilers—the book is written to be standalone and additional volumes will depend on this doing well. However a story outline is in place to give DMs context or the ability to continue the story even if we aren't able to. ASSUMING everything goes as planned, there will be 4 additional volumes, each closer to full campaign length than this one.

Since it's been out for a couple of months now: is there gonna be a volume 2?

I think the fact that it's only gotten as high as Silver in sales rankings is probably not a good sign.

It has not sold enough to be a top priority for a sequel but due to the extremely kind reviews we've gotten, we're exploring options on how to continue the story on a reduced budget.

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
