Fey Compendium III: Frightful Fey


The fey are not just twinkly little sprites living under flowers. The fey are spirits of nature and dreams, and those dreams can easily turn into nightmares. This supplement details the numerous fey that lurk in the darkness, consort with the dead, and hunger for blood: a total of 65 unique statblocks for original fey and fey adjacent monsters with Challenge Ratings ranging from 1/4 to 15. This includes variants of common fey such as dryads, sprites, pixies, satyrs, and unicorns, three new varieties of sidhe, and entirely new monsters.

Lords and Ladies

Fey Liches: It is not just mortal spellcasters who seek the immortality that lichdom can grant them. In this supplement, you can find a lich equivalent for dryads, hags, and satyrs, each with a unique kind of phylactery thematically linked to their nature. The rhyzalich dryad (CR 11) is a dryad who sought lichdom through twisted parasitic fungi which drain the life from the surrounding forest. A termagant hag has carved her own calcified heart from her chest and hidden it. This is a template that can be applied to any hag and includes statistics for Grandmother Griselda (CR 12), an elder termagant green hag in possession of the Book of Vile Evil itself. A marsyan (CR 10) is a satyr that has bound its soul to an instrument and flayed the skin from its body, allowing it to endure forever and impersonate the lives of its victims to spread misery.

Witches: Witchcraft is as old as the forests themselves, and the fey have long ago mastered the strange paths of arcane and divine magic that makes up the twisting turns of witchcraft. The greatest of these witches are the nemanon (CR 15), sidhe lords of magic who command the respect of ghosts and the power of boundaries. In the deep, dark forests live the briarwitch dryads (CR 8), those dryads who have mastered witchcraft that they might defend their homes from invaders.

Hag Creations: This supplement includes statistics for two new constructs made by hags: the repulsive filth son (CR 6), made from refuse and dung in mockery of golems, and the horrific gruesome lurker (CR 4), a psionically empowered scarecrow that feeds on fear. It also includes statistics for a new variety of hag touched rats: the moonrats (CR 1-5), mundane rats by day which gain strength and intelligence when touched by moonlight.

Restless Spirits: The Feywild is filled with the restless spirits of those for whom death was just the next step in their journey. The mishocair ghosts were once elves, but corruption of their souls lead to them becoming undead spirits after death. Banshee are among their number, but others such as the corpse stealing saugh (CR 5), the starving fear gorta (CR 3), and the inspiration devouring lhiannan shee (CR 3) blight the earth. However, even a banshee can achieve redemption, becoming a cariad ysbryd (CR 4) to sing their songs to those in pain. Meanwhile, the mournful rusalka stalk the earth, forever bound to their fey patrons and the manner of their deaths. From the eternally thirsting drowned rusalka (CR 4) to the ever hungry starved rusalka (CR 4) to the forever suffering plagued rusalka (CR 4), to the furious scorched rusalka (CR 4), these poor wretches spend their existence in constant torment. Only the martyred rusalka (CR 4) finds any reprieve, though it is burdened with terrible purpose.

Lords of the Dead: The fey have long ruled over ghosts and spirits. The most wretched of these dark lords are the dullahan (CR 13), the archetypical headless horseman who escaped from Hell and stalks the nights in search of victims to raise as undead soldiers. The tragic dearg-due (CR 14) are vampires of yearning and wanting forever trying to fill the void in their blighted souls with companionship from mortal and undead slaves alike. Only the uncle skeleton (CR 12) possesses any mirt, these ghoulish dancing skeletons taking delight in using their mastery of the dead to both delight and horrify.

Corruptions of Nature: The corruption of nature is a dark thing to witness. This corruption from come from many sources. One such source is the dreaded gulthias tree, which spreads its wicked influence to create gulthias dryads (CR 6), though strangest of all its creations are the melon blights (CR 1) and pumpkin blights (CR 2), blood gorged vegetables which can empower undead and other blights with their unwholesome contents. The touch of dark gods such as Moander can create abominations such as the rotvine defiler (CR 10), elementals of living unhallowed ground. However, darkest of all are the corruptions of nature born from blackest despair, such as the corrupture (CR 9) and the shadow unicorn (CR 6).

Warfare: War is a horror as old as the multiverse, and the Feywild is not untouched by its terrors. Those satyrs who embrace the glory of war may become gabharchinn (CR 5), fighting alongside the shrieking bocanach (CR 4) spirits, their chants and howls empowering the bloodshed around them. Leading these bloodthirsty creatures may be the sluagh (CR 11), the sidhe lords of carrion who slaughter the innocent and feed on their corpses. However, the true horrors of war are revealed by the ragewalkers (CR 14), those fey born from land so scarred by arcane warfare that no life can grow there again.

Beasts: There are many dangerous beasts in the Feywild. A traveler in the untamed reaches of the Feywild may find themselves having to contend with a bhaergala (CR 5), a cunning hunter capable of devouring ghosts and turning magic against its caster. One who commits a sin may find themselves pursued by the phantom-like fenhounds (CR 5), beasts of vengeance and moonlight. Most horrific of all, though, are the feral yowlers (CR 7), abominable fusions of yeth hounds and displacer beasts that live in eternal agony and rage.

Nature's Vengeance: When nature is abused beyond tolerance, it may lash out against those that would wrong it, creating conscious expressions of its rage. The beastwraiths (CR 1-2) are examples of this, the spirits of slain deer, wolves, and more set to wander the world in search of blood. When a dryad's tree is destroyed, the bitterness in its chest may ignite into a black flame of hatred, scorching its own flesh and turning it into a deadwood revenant (CR 6) in search of targets to vent its wrath upon. However, the most devastating of these are the wraths of nature, elementals imbued with the fury of the natural world to seek vengeance, such as the calvary creekrotter (CR 10), an elemental composed of polluted mud and dead vegetation, and the cinderswarm (CR 9), a roiling cloud of furious sparks each born from a life of the forest lost.

Creatures of Disease: Disease is a part of nature, just like anything else. As such, there are fey of disease, though they are foul and wretched, twisted by suffering and rage. Those satyrs who worshipped Baphomet to gain power found themselves cursed by Oberon himself to become the wretched and hobbled bargda (CR 6), hideous hulking monstrosities that play the rough music of resentment. Those hags who seek to spread disease with wanton abandon may transform themselves into a rylkar harridan (CR 9), a monstrous rat the size of an elephant that gives birth to disease spreading spawn when exposed to flame. However, the most horrific of these is the nuckelavee (CR 14), a skinless abomination in horse shape that rises from the sea as summer turns to fall to spread pestilence and famine with its deadly breath.

Tricksters: The Feywild is full of tricksters, and while the tricks of many are benign, some may turn cruel or even deadly. The bevhensie (CR ½), for example, were once sprites in service to Titania, but when they dared to laugh at the Seelie Queen they were banished. Now they act as familiars to witches, and their laughter at the failure of others can inspire hysterical laughter in kind. Also infamous are the water horses. Most well known is the tangie (CR 10), based off the kelpie of Scottish folklore, which loves to drown those that try to ride it, but less well known is the shapeshifting mourioche (CR 7), a grotesque horse bearing two muscular arms sprouting from its withers. However, the greatest tricksters of the Feywild are the jacks, mortals inhabited by fey spirits to create creatures such as the capering jolly jack (CR 4), able to make people laugh themselves to death, the sadistic springheel jack (CR 8), able to leap without fear and spit fire, and the thieving spryjack (CR 3), tiny monkey-like creatures that live in the chests of the envious and emerge at night.

Deceivers: Lies and deceptions breed thick in the dark shadows of the Feywild. Fairies such as the aorial (CR 2) spread vicious rumors to the dreams of innocent people, while the incorporeal boowray (CR 1) whisper evil advice into the ears of their victims. Mortals consumed by resentment and envy may become host to jack spirits, transforming into the deceitful jack around (CR 1), fey that can absorb enchantments and appear as normal mortals until their excitement reveals a mouth full of needle sharp teeth. The mouthless banshrae (CR 6) serve the sidhe lords of the Feywild, forever searching for an opportunity to betray their masters or to torment an innocent with their locust darts. Even lies themselves can gain flesh in the Feywild, as a deception may grow into a bile wrapped in beauty (CR 5), a horrifically misshapen wretch oozing acidic pus that clothes itself in illusions of loveliness to lure in victims for their scarring vomit.

Does this product include lairs (or whatever fey use)?

Though a number of creatures in this product do have lair actions, I regrettably do not have any lair maps. My strength lies primarily in monster creation, so my lair inclusion has suffered as a result. I do have plans to start expanding into more maps in the future, but for the time being this product will only be able to provide you with lore, statblocks, and accompanying artwork.

Woops! Looks like I overlooked that one. Yeah, it's CR 4, like the others. I'll have to fix that later. Thanks for pointing that out!

I’m sure this will be awesome but after downloading this all I get is a black screen - any advice?

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
