This is a very interesting adventure. I’ve always liked the original, and this new adventure has lots of good ideas, but I wonder why the author didn’t use any of the plot from the original, aside from the main villains plus disappearing locals? In particular I think it’s a loss to not use the Emerald Claw rivals, which introduces a more dynamic and less predictable opponent. That aside, I love the structure of the dungeons.

Hi TZC! Thanks for your interest and I'm happy to hear of another fan of the original adventure. For DMsGuild purposes, I would have been limited to making a conversion of the original to 5th edition and was inspired to make changes substantial enough to make it a new interpretation with the spirit of James Wyatt adventure. I wanted to move the location from The Cogs in Sharn's depths as it is a frequent destination in Tier One Eberron adventures and The City of the Dead is rarely explored, aside in the fiction line. The Emerald Claw decision was not an easy one but the potential attacks on the party every time they emerge from the Ossuary felt a bit redundant - and I was concerned that the persistent loss of their ill-gotten gains would feel heavy-handed (plus I had just featured the Claw in 'The Most Dangerous Game' adventure and wanted to mix it up!). I attempted to use Wandering Monsters encounters - and Gath - to provide for new and alternative plot lines. Thanks very much for your interest and for taking...See more

Hi Stephen. Thanks for your reply. I hadn’t thought about the ‘conversion versus re-imagining’ aspect, that makes sense. You are right that getting jumped by the EC is heavy-handed, so DMs should tread carefully, but it always struck me as a great way to annoy a party and therefore lure them into a particular adventure/campaign.

My other question is the encounter in F4 and F5. At a glance this looks very tough: 4 x CR ⅛, 5 x CR ½, 2 x CR 2, and a CR 3, if I’ve read it right. Assuming a typical party starts the adventure at 2nd level, will that fight be winnable?

My thoughts were that the adventurers would level up as much as two levels as they made their way down toward the final encounter and that the ritual could be infiltrated and disrupted, cultists picked off, or that the battle would take place across the Queen's Lair and not be limited to the actual chamber where the diabolical acts are being performed. I added a bit about gaining sidekicks at the Deathsgate Guild Chapterhouse to bolster a party, or the Gloaming in the Catacomb, and if the encounter proved too perilous would always advise modifying. I did want that encounter to feel intimidating and impel adventurers to think creatively - a little pulp flair. Hope that helps!

I might also add, the gibbering mouther has no allegiance to those that summoned it and the cultists should have as much to fear from it as the adventurers, if ritual is disrupted.

Ooo, good idea - the mouther goes rogue!

Thanks Stephen. If I get to run this - which may happen in a few weeks - I’ll certainly leave a review. Good work.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
